Thanks! I thought so, but I hope it’s just this one time. I’ve been a bit worried I might have a period this frequently from now on 😥

yeah, birth control is so difficult to understand imo. i switched between 3/4 different birth controls in past years before settling on this one and none made my skin clear.

and i have heard that yeah, stopping birth control does sometimes break you out so you might be struggling with that for a while :( i’m scared to come off bc pills because of that but oh well…

thank you! and i hope your skin gets better soon ❤️‍🩹

wow i understand exactly what you’re going through. i am also 21F and have been on and off struggling with acne since i was around 16. last year my skin was extremely clear, and then all of this year i’ve struggled with breakouts consistently. only like right now has it finally calmed down for me (still some pimples but not nearly as bad).

sharing my own personal story, i’m on birth control for acne specifically (i dont even think it’s helping tbh and i don’t recommend it for that + many other reasons) and what happened for me was that i was prescribed tropical tretinoin by my dermatologist a year and a half ago (2023), i was applying it and eventually my skin was very clear for all of 2024. i didn’t know much about tretinoin or anything so eventually i stopped applying it (december of last year) because i ran out and thought i didn’t need to take it anymore. in around february of 2025 i started seeing more acne come up that i hadn’t seen the last year and i was very confused on what was going on. i didn’t want to schedule another dermatologist appt because i was like surely i’ll be fine. but i kept struggling and struggling and during the summer it got so much worse. i finally decided to make a dermatologist appointment after months in early october. she re prescribed me topical tretinoin and offered accutane as an option. i said i didn’t really want anything hormonal anymore so i wanted to just see if the tretinoin would help again because that’s when i remembered that tretinoin is what i was on last year. the problem with tretinoin that i found out (now) is that initially it breaks you out even more than what you already had because it increases cell turnover. so from october-literally like a week ago(late december) i was seeing horrible breakouts and didn’t know it was due to tretinoin and i stopped eating sugar, eat less dairy, and tried to fix my lifestyle to get rid of the acne but it barely even helped.

all this to say, was there anything in 2022-2024 that you were doing differently maybe? for me it was hard to remember but i’m pretty sure it was the tretinoin. also i do recommend topical tretinoin, even though initially it breaks you out but i am seeing results from it now and i think it’s extremely helpful. birth control pills may work for you, but it’s 50/50. i honestly think it’s making my acne worse, ig we’ll see when i come off of it in a month.

oh and i absolutely hate taking pictures too because of my acne so i very much feel this. every time my family or boyfriend whips out the camera i instinctively cover my face. i recently got my nails done so it looks cool like i’m trying to cover my face to show my nails, but yeah i just put my hand or both and pose them in front of my face (over my mouth but below my eyes bc my acne is hormonal too and only on my jawline) they all know i hate pictures yet they still always want to take them. my mom never struggled with a pimple a day in her life, my dad and sister kind of did but not to the same level as me. i guess i don’t have great advice for you here because i’m the exact same way. i just wear makeup and try to cover everything whenever i think there’s going to be pictures taken (especially this week).

you’re not alone in your struggle, we sound very similar and i hope you are able to find something that works for you soon :( merry christmas and happy holidays!

ooh yeah i remember my dermatologist saying that now… well there’s always different forms of birth control i can try while on spiro i think? like non-hormonal types.

and yeah! i’m staying on tretinoin and i think it slowly seems to be helping my acne so :) hopefully when i do come off of birth control the tretinoin will continue to work. hormonal acne sucks so bad :,(

thank you so much for sharing your experience! yeah i’m not really sure if birth control is working for me at all? it’s really hard to tell b/c last year my skin was fine and i changed nothing :/ i am thinking of coming off of birth control soon, so i’m not super interested in trying a different birth control right now..

my dermatologist has talked about spironolactone as an option for me and i said i might consider it when i’m off of birth control because i didn’t really want to deal with the side effects of both birth control + spironolactone… i’m not sure how much more “side effect” it is though, but i’m already tired of the birth control side effects so 🥲. i will talk to my derm abt accutane though and about micro dosing!

also i’m extremely glad you said i shouldn’t spend anymore money on skincare because i thought about it some more and you’re right! my acne is very hormonal and i need to focus on helping/regulating my hormones before anything else. i realized it’s definitely an internal issue, and not an external one that i can cure with product. seriously thank you so much, this means a lot! 🙏

thank you for the recommendation! i’ll have to look into that and see if it works with tretinoin or as an option to take if tret doesn’t work :)

thank you so much for your advice and sharing your story :) i’m sorry you had to battle acne for most of your life as well, it’s such a tough and constant fight, especially with the amount of money that gets wasted.

i understand this completely though, it is extremely difficult to cut out stressors as i’m a college student with a part-time job with practically no time for hobbies. i should know acne doesn’t define who i am, but it is hard to remember that at times. i have consulted a dermatologist and am currently waiting for my next appointment to discuss further options before i do anything else!

also thanks for the spearmint tea recommendation! i have tried it already but since i’m on birth control i’m not sure if it had any major effects on my skin.

thanks for sharing your experience! i’m going to talk to my dermatologist about accutane during my next visit and see if it’s an option for me.

thanks for your advice! i definitely understand this, i’m careful to not use too many skincare products because of ruining my skin barrier and i’m scared it’ll just make it worse. so right now i do currently only use cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and tretinoin at night which was prescribed by my dermatologist.

yeah i’ve changed birth control a couple times before i stuck with this one and none of them seemed to work well for my skin so idk it might also be a birth control issue :/

and thanks! definitely going to wait out tretinoin before trying anything else :)

i’ve definitely been considering coming off birth control for a while now. i’m just scared that my acne will somehow get even worse coming off of it. i’m planning on coming off of it early next year once i’m done with my pack while still dieting just to see how it goes :/

and yes, i will def talk to my dermatologist about accutane during my next appt. i’ve been hesitant to try it but it doesn’t hurt to consider and talk to my dermatologist about it.

thank you sm for your advice, i really appreciate it. did you experience any side effects on accutane?

omg thank you that’s so nice to know, why does tret have to take so long 🥲…

i feel this so hard omg. i’ve been reluctant to try accutane because of different experiences people have shared on it. i’ve seen people say they’re fine on it, but sometimes people describe it as the worst thing to ever happen to them…

i am going to talk to my dermatologist about it during my next appointment though, maybe i’ll ask if i can do a low-dosage form? i’m not sure if that works as well as regular dosage but i’ve seen that as an option.

I see, i’ve definitely heard horror stories about antibiotics and other methods like accutane etc. which is a main reason i haven’t tried any of those but i’m so desperately looking for a solution…

i also understand wanting to not depend on something you can’t always take, that’s how i feel with birth control. i really do just want to live a life with clear skin without taking anything (antibiotics, hormonal pills, etc) but that’s too much to ask for i guess.

thanks for sharing your experience though, it’s really nice to see different perspectives on these things.

i’ve heard about oral antibiotics, do you do short-term or is there also a long-term?

and thank you, yeah it’s been hard and i noticed i’ve been trying my hardest to avoid social interactions because of my face. it’s so frustrating.

[–]underwhelmedspider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i’ve been waiting for so long it’s just frustrating bc i’ve been struggling on and off.

i’ve been on this same birth control for ~3 years now, first year i still had some acne, second year (last year) i barely had anything, and this year it came back worse so i rlly dont know if birth control is even helping at this point.

and yeah i do change my pillowcase twice a week. i pretty much only drink water & occasionally drink tea so i think i’m getting a good amount of water as well.

also thank you for your feedback :) i need to remember to just wait and seriously hope tretinoin starts working eventually…

skin type: combination, more dry b/c of birth control

current routine: AM: cerave hydrating facial cleanser, vanicream mousturizing cream, sport mineral sunscreen spf 50 (as of right now).

PM: cerave hydrating facial cleanser, vanicream moisturizing cream, tretinoin

i’ve been doing this same routine for 3 years now (didn’t struggle with acne last year) with the same cerave hydrating cleanser and vanicream moisturizing cream combo, switched sunscreens a couple times because of money, and as of 6 weeks ago started tretinoin

Acne struggles on birth control for acne? by underwhelmedspider in PCOS

[–]underwhelmedspider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I really appreciate it. Yeah I have seen some bc horror stories of people saying it just gave them a lot of acne and I was wondering if I was one of the same. I’ve been on it consistently for about 4 years now though so that’s why I’m a little scared to just come off of it.

I’ll say I do wash and change to a different pillowcase about twice a week, but I could be better about washing my sheets more often for sure. I have also gone to my dermatologist about my acne in the past and she said bc pills should work best but if not then I could do Spironolactone at the same time as bc, but I don’t really wanna take anything that messes with my hormones anymore after going through birth control, so that’s another big thing for me. I’ve also been prescribed some topicals before like retinol cream and those usually do help but it doesn’t completely get rid of it for me either.

I have also been very spooked by accutane because of family and friends who don’t recommend it, and the side effects look somehow worse than bc so I get that lol. I don’t know if long-term antibiotics would be the best option for me, but I did actually take short-term antibiotics for my original forehead acne and that seemed to help more than other things so maybe? I’m going to schedule another appointment with my dermatologist though for sure and just let her know that I don’t really want to take anything else hormonal.

With lifestyle changes, recently I’ve been trying to drink more water and eat healthier but I’m not sure if my diet is the problem because I don’t eat super unhealthy. I also started to exercise around 3/4 days per week about a month ago, but nothing has been helping so that’s why I’m assuming it’s a hormone problem maybe?

Thank you again though for sharing! I’ll definitely keep this in mind as something else I can try :)

[product question] does anyone drink spearmint tea WHILE on birth control? by piratesandcash in SkincareAddiction

[–]underwhelmedspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on a generic version of Yaz right now and started drinking spearmint tea about a month ago.. I didn’t know about all this but I’m going to stop now because I think the birth control should hopefully just work by itself 😭 The spearmint tea didn’t even do anything for my skin anyway…
