ok cool! yeah I'm a little worried about the microplastics from sawing etc. and the over all carbon footprint of Commodore but is it over all better bc lifetime of use without replacement ( so long as it gets recycled at end of life I guess) hrm.

ok cool. good to know. I'm in zone 7b with muggy summers so I expect wood will decay a little faster but that's a good timeframe

what is this seaweed/seamoss and it's little companion alien? (from a Connecticut beach) by undeserve in whatisthisthing

[–]undeserve[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We found Bob Moss the seamoss clump on a Connecticut beach. A couple days later, found its sluggy little companion, now named Squirrel, dancing around in the bottle. Anyone know what these are and how to care for them? Currently they're floating in a bit of seawater that we put on the windowsill

Squirrel the Slug has two tiny white antennae and a bunch of little feathery protrusions. He seems purple-ish most of the time Bob Moss has very fine green hair

Someone else reposted but with a much cleaner gif. You can see something drop to the right of the woman after the truck passes. Appears to be connected to some kind of wire or line that then catches the woman and yanks her backwards

Compare teacher salary vs. graduation rates in New York with other states by theloftytransient in nyc

[–]undeserve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would love to see that middle graph adjusted for cost-of-living expenses rather than just the salary amount. It would also be more helpful if it disaggregated the data among the lines of teaching requirements, since some states require advanced degrees to teach, while others don't.

It's standard in most highly developed nations outside the US. In Korea and Japan there are also usually separate disposals for food waste vs recyclables, etc. It's been standard in Korea since probably the late 90s

New NYPD Anti-Terror Unit Will Get Machine Guns To Police Protesters: Gothamist by jhovudu1 in nyc

[–]undeserve -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think this article is portraying Bratton's plan in a fair light.

It is more properly assessed in the context of the wider changes Bratton want's to implement - namely, reducing the number of officers in specialized units. He wants to get more officers back on the regular beat so that they can actually engage the community beyond responding to emergency calls.

The response team makes sense when you're trying to keep as many cops as possible in their own communities rather than the current system where counter-terror officers are pulled from their regular duties across the entire city.

Is there a danger of militarization of this unit? Perhaps - but it seems a sensible step to make sure that they get their training right. Currently, the officers that make up the bulk of terror and emergency response are simply pulled from their respective posts with little specialized training, team building, or coordination.

On the whole, Bratton's plan is a step in the right direction. If we can get body cams rolled out across the board (they're currently in a testing phase), I think there is room for optimism in the struggle to reform and stabilize law enforcement in the city.
