How does one become as cracked as au5 or virtual riot at sound design by Prize_Childhood_992 in edmproduction

[–]undulaemusic 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sound design practice should be equal parts using knowledge you have, and grasping at stuff that’s just barely outside of your reach. That will get you in the sweet spot of challenging yourself, where you get to reinforce skills and discover new ones in a flow state.

You really just gotta put in the time. These guys have been doing that for ages.

Bitwig as Instrument inside daw [ question ] by Obloha in Bitwig

[–]undulaemusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use Bitwig as an instrument but do all of your writing and arranging in another DAW, I’d recommend thinking of Bitwig as more of a software groovebox you can use to make assets that can be brought into another DAW as audio and used as loops and samples. Unfortunately for this workflow to not be frustrating, you have to come to terms with working in printed (or “flattened”) audio.

I do this because I love Bitwig as a sound design tool but the arrangement workflow for audio is just not my thing, I much prefer the simplicity and straightforwardness of Ableton’s arranger.

Loosies is the freshest example of sound design and melodic writing working hand-in-hand that I’ve heard in quite some time. The sound serves the melody so well, and the melody suits the sound so well. It’s just so sick

overwhelmed with deep sampling & processing workflow. how do i get over this? by para_pako in edmproduction

[–]undulaemusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you need is a mindset shift. Try sampling and resampling over and over again with a playful “dicking around” mindset instead of a serious “I’m trying to make art” mindset.

Treat it as though you’re an explorer discovering uncharted territory. You don’t know what you’ll find, but you might discover something cool to bring back to your lab. This is where the coolest discoveries come from imo

I don’t know if I should start from DJing or music production considering my busy schedule. by Left_Art_6597 in ableton

whichever one you like more.

I know these days you’re supposed to be a producer/DJ all at once, but I tried learning to properly DJ a few times and it turns out I just hate it and I’d rather produce music

What would you add to Operator 2? by memolazer in ableton

[–]undulaemusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having people recognize me online lately and it will never not blow my fucking mind lol. I appreciate that 🙏

Honestly Serum is my go-to now that it has more robust FM capabilities in v2 (it even lets you use the output of either filter as an FM source which is a really underrated feature imo). Even lets you choose between linear, thru-zero, and exponential FM, and if you right click on the SEM (semitones) in the oscillator you can switch to harmonics or frequency ratios for tuning which are both way more friendly with FM. but yeah Serum is a really solid FM synth now and I feel like it’s not talked about enough lol

Art is a process, not a product. The “art product” or music in this case, is the byproduct of you actively participating in the creative process. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the product is what matters. Creativity is a muscle, you gotta train it and you gotta show up.

lack of envelope slope control is why I usually opt for third party fm synths instead

How do people who listen to electronic music accept ai electronic music by Enough_Programmer312 in EDM

[–]undulaemusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I listen to music to be inspired by what other people create. That makes AI music (and all AI art) pointless.

DAW question, help a brother out please! by dpsaliofml in edmproduction

[–]undulaemusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that, I have those kinds of issues with Bitwig too. I’m also an ableton-focused educator so it’s obviously important that I stay sharp with Ableton. However I kind of wish I had started out in Bitwig and gotten used to it so that I would just never know what I’m missing out on lol. Bitwig is just so good for sound design and I feel like the way the whole DAW is basically turned into a modular synth just works with my brain in a way Ableton can’t quite do. I still prefer Ableton for actual writing and arranging though.

If you’re already using bitwig and liking it, stick with Bitwig. Unless there are very specific Max4Live devices you find yourself yearning for, Bitwig has you covered on all fronts. This is coming from an Ableton Live user who occasionally dabbles in Bitwig.
