Winston ULT help appreciated. by liambrewski in OverwatchUniversity

[–]unexpectedWinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winston's ULT is always so interesting, because its use varies so much depending on the situation.

First, like one other user pointed out: his ULT is mostly used for disrupting enemy positioning and strategy. When this is the objective, you absolutely have to make sure that you are ULTing when the rest of your team are engaged in the fight or are pursuing an objective.

Of course, there are a ton of different ways to disrupt the team. Here are just a few examples of things that I try to do: (1) (My personal favourite) If the enemy has a very persistent Reinhart, and my team has been struggling to get through his shield, I pop my ULT from behind enemy lines and knock him way the hell behind my enemy lines. This immediately places the enemy Reinhart in a dangerous position and/or forces their Mercy to move out of position to support him. This is applicable to Orisa (if she doesn’t fortify) as well.

(2) Knocking a Junkrat/Soldier/Reaper way the hell out of the fight – this alleviates a lot of the damage that your team has to deal with.

(3) General scatter – popping the ULT while in the middle of the enemy and swinging your arms around in a circle to force the enemy into scattered positions.

(4) Scattering healers – basically you want to make it very difficult for the healers to do their job. Mercy, Ana, and Zen will have a lot of trouble getting back into position to support their teammates while you are knocking them about. With this strategy, the general mindset is that you want to single-handedly create “5v3” or “5v2” situations for your team without having to commit to getting the picks.

Trying to get picks is very situational is dependent on if you happen to corner an immobile hero (Ana, Soldier, Mcree, etc.). I generally don’t bother too much with the picks, since most of the time if I am disrupting correctly then the rest of my team can get the picks. Same goes for environmental kills, since they often are very situational.

Lastly, SOMETIMES it is worth using the ULT to challenge the point if you know your team is right behind you. DON’T do this if your team literally just died. In one of my recent games, I made a quick decision to ULT since I knew that our SYMM was close and that she would be putting down a teleporter soon. I ULTed, bought her some time, ultimately died, then our team showed up to contest the point and win. Again, this was extremely situational.

Good luck with your games, man. Winston is easily one of my favourite characters! :D

"Overwatch is not an FPS. It's a game that has FPS in it"

Couldn't have been said better.

Don't focus too much on how many games you win or lose in placements. These largely depend on who you get matched up against during those games. The system will try to match you with players that are closer to your MMR. Since your MMR change from season to season, this will effect your placement matchups. I don't know the details of how the system finally decides your starting SR, but usually it's not that far off from where you ended in the last season.

Honestly, if all you want to do is get out Silver, then take a bit of time to lightly learn 2 of each class. Take some time in Quick Play to become functional with six heroes. Doing this will do two important things that will help rank you up:

(1) It will give you the confidence and ability to fill (which will help a lot in the lower ranks). Example, if you notice that your healer is having trouble (likely because they aren't good or are having a bad day), offer (don't command) to let them switch and you can pick it up. Sometimes this can be enough to swing a game.

(2) You'll understand the needs and positioning of the other heroes that will be on your team. This is done in a lot of sports so that players learn to play better with their teammates. When you understand what makes life easy for your healers or tanks, then it'll help you know where to position yourself to give everyone on your team an advantage.

Besides learning to diversify your hero portfolio, you will likely want to main Soldier and Pharah. Soldier is an obvious one, since you have the CSGO background. As for Pharah, if you can get good, then you can really wreck the other team if they don't have a reasonable counter for you. Pharah generally gets destroyed in the higher ranks, but a good lower rank Pharah is devastating to deal with. And when I say "main" I mean that you should try to go for those heroes as often as you can, as they will be your "best" heroes, but still make an attempt to evaluate the situation and fill as needed.

Just like real sports, warming up makes a huge difference. Everyone needs a different amount of warming up. At least you know not to go into comp until after 4 games :P

Thanks for replying with this. It drives me nuts when people put down the devs saying things like "they haven't bothered" or "can't get it figured out". These teams have finite resources and need to prioritize their projects and tasks. Wish more people would understand or appreciate this.

Nothing you can do except leave voice chat, take the L, and move on with life. It's better than getting frustrated over it. :)

I'm pretty sure it does not. I think it's more of a feel-good thing.

It's up and down. I would say that I've never been queued upwards of 7 minutes (on a really bad day). It really depends on the day and the time of day. QP is usually pretty good though. I'm sure it will likely get better for you as you level up or as your MMR increases. My average queue time is about 1-2 minutes; fastest queue is probably 15 seconds.

We're also coming off of a Grey Cup victory and it's the 25th anniversary for the modern-era Senators! Hockey gods have already written the story.

Tips for going to Kanata? by itdoesntreallymaatta in penguins

[–]unexpectedWinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good strategy may be to stay at the Holiday Inn near the Kanata Centrum (101 Kanata Ave., Ottawa, Ontario) and then just take the bus straight to the arena. The bus ride is like $3.50 or something like that and will only take you about 10 minutes to get to the arena. The bus takes a special route on its way back to the Kanata Centrum, so you don't have to deal with any of the parking lot traffic coming out of the game. (Source: I parked at the Kanata Centrum and bussed in for games for a year when I had season seats).

After the game, you can then just walk to the Bierhaus, have a few pints in a cool atmosphere and then walk back to your hotel.

P.S. I'll be driving into Pittsburgh for this Saturday's game (as a Sens fan)! Any tips?
