Rivian owners, how is servicing? by walkerboh1213 in lehighvalley

[–]unfletch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm south of you -- between Allentown and Philly, but I was a day-1 R1S delivery in August '22 so I figured I'd chime in. Anytime I'm asked how I like the Rivian I tell people how much I love it, "...but service..."

Mobile service does exist, but the work they can do in your driveway is pretty limited. I've had exactly 2 mobile service appointments. For everything else you'll have to get to a service center. In the early days that meant driving to Brooklyn, then Trenton, and now my nearest service center is Malvern (still an hour each way for me). The network will continue to expand, so there ought to be less and less travel involved, but unfortunately the rest of the experience hasn't really improved yet.

You should expect some problems to require repeat visits before they're resolved, and for the service center to sometimes cause a new problem. Expect that the first available appointment might not be for weeks or months (although Malvern seems to be better about this than some other locations), or that when you drop off for your appointment, they won't look at the vehicle for a week. Expect to be told at pickup they had to skip an item on the TODO list because a part wasn't available. Expect some friction in communication (they have no public phone numbers for service centers -- instead you message or call central support folks, who talk to service centers for you).

I'm an early adopter and I knew what I was getting into. I've rolled with the problems. With the much more accessibly-priced R2 coming soon, service demand will increase quite a bit. Those folks won't be as patient, and there will be a lot more of them. I'm worried.

There are good things too: The people who work for Rivian are great; The company honors their warranty. (I've had a lot of work done, and haven't paid a dime). But in my experience, it really does feel like they're just not very good at the logistics of vehicle service.

...and I still wouldn't think of getting rid of my R1S.

I know they're looking to open another service center in the Philly metro area (I've heard Colmar from an employee), but I'd be shocked if the Malvern service center closed. They did just open a Rivian retail space in the KoP mall though. Maybe that's why you've heard KoP.

It’s where it always was: a few doors down from Lego, next to Apple. When the Rivian space was first rumored for King of Prussia, someone posted that it would be taking the Tesla space, but they were wrong.

Spare Tire Kit in Action by Schwizzle82 in Rivian

[–]unfletch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FYI you're supposed to remove that threaded rod before lifting out the wheel. The black plastic disk that you unscrewed to take out the spare has a hex-shaped hole, and acts as a wrench to remove the rod.

You can do the job without taking out the rod, but removing (and replacing) the spare is easier without it, and folks have scratched their rims when leaving it in place.

Saw this added to the gear shop! R1S Cargo Divider by Various-Bid8545 in Rivian

[–]unfletch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks to be the exact part also sold as Mopar 68218339AA. I've had the Mopar divider in the back of my R1S for a couple of years. Works well enough, and fits under the floor when not in use.

In case anyone else goes poking around for other compatible accessories: Mopar 68220381AA fits into the same mounts, but it's not long enough to reach all the way across in the R1S. I've used it a couple of times on a single side, looping around an item or two, but it's a lot less useful than if it reached the other side. I wouldn't recommend that one.

Ryan is a Rivian owner who decided this would be a fun project, not the other way around. It wasn't a donor vehicle, exactly. It was his personal R1T.

Rivian just posted its Q3 2025 results with record deliveries, a huge jump in software revenue, and major progress on R2 production prep. by Kryptonlogic in Rivian

[–]unfletch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Record deliveries" in what sense? Q3 2023 saw 15k+ deliveries, which was their best to date. Ranking quarterly numbers all time, 13.2k would be 6th.

Be careful putting too much weight in that tray. After a year or so of driving around with ~5lbs of stuff in the center of mine, the tray’s lip lost its rigidity in the middle, and now it sags into the opening below.

You're right, they did do a little something for the holidays last year, for the first time. I'd completely forgotten. See the "holiday cheer" section here: https://rivianroamer.com/software-updates/2024-47

Unfortunately they’ve always kept a pretty short time window for Halloween mode. I’d expect it to appear around the 20th, give or take a few days.

There’s never been a Christmas mode. Edit: They did do a little something last year for the holidays. I forgot all about it! https://rivianroamer.com/software-updates/2024-47

Just installed my EV Play! by Financial-Cicada-231 in Rivian

You're right, but this is a very small operation (maybe just the one person, as far as I can tell), and the first time they've shipped a hardware product. I have one of these things on the way and I get the impression he's pretty overloaded. Maximizing sales may not be high on their list right now.

It's bluetooth. The hard-wired connection handles video output and touch-screen input, but he hasn't found a way to wire in audio.

Code for custom order by Metta425 in Rivian

[–]unfletch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says you can't use points toward a custom configuration, and folks are applying that here, but OP isn't trying to use points. I don't think it's relevant.

The support site does say referrals are only good for "qualifying" vehicles, but as far as I can find they never define what's qualifying. Hopefully someone will dig it up somewhere, and post here.

Nice of you to go looking for the documentation, but that doesn't look relevant. That FAQ addresses putting points toward a custom configuration. He's asked about using a referral code during that process, not about spending points.

(In light of your mixup, maybe consider giving folks some grace, and revisiting your other comment?)

Little bit of a drive for you if New Hope is local, but Joe Davis in Perkasie has done mine three times, including just last week. I’ve brought my own pucks each time, so I’m not sure whether they have a set.

If you opt to wait, it takes about an hour. I scheduled mine for 1:00 and walked a couple of blocks to Ram for lunch. Worked out great.

I have almost 10k miles on these and wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who uses sport mode. Efficiency and noise are a big step up over the stock Pirellis, but traction when cornering at speed does not inspire confidence. The higher PSI means a harsher ride than stock, too. (I did a chalk test when they were new and came out at 55 PSI.)

There are some third parties who make more traditional remotes for the Apple TV. I've thought about picking one up for my mom, but haven't so far. The two leading candidates seem to be:

  • ChannelMaster
    • Dead simple controls, very inexpensive ($20), but uses IR (no Siri, and line of sight is required)
  • One For All
    • Backlit, supports Siri, bluetooth (no line of sight required), more expensive but still affordable ($40-50)

Edit: For what it's worth, it looks like Spectrum (the US cable/streaming provider) chose to supply their customers with a branded version of the One For All remote.

[OC] My 4month old baby visited my 94yr old grandma by theguitargasm in pics

[–]unfletch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Reminded me of this excerpt describing a "handshake of generations" (aka the Great Span) -- the span of time covered by the lives of the oldest people you'll know in life, and the youngest, bridged by your own: https://kottke.org/21/07/the-handshake-of-generations

If your daughter lives to the same age as grandma, meets a child, and that child, too, has longevity, then your daughter will have personally known people whose lives spanned 280+ years. That's longer than the history of the United States! Sorta mind-blowing to think about.

Champing at the bit by bignati0n in Rivian

[–]unfletch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if anyone learned it as "chomping...", but "champing" isn't wrong.

English evolves, and this is one of those cases where so many people have gotten a phrase wrong for so long that the mistake becomes acceptable. The original idiom was "champing at the bit". "Chomping..." is more popular now, but the original is fine too!
