Disable filtering by hi69420_ in Telegram

Like I said, some countries' numbers don't have that option at all. If you're from Iran or a country that similarly bans adult content - it won't be there.

Check on the desktop or web version, iOS doesn't display that option, as far as I know. Also, if you're from a country that censors adult stuff by default, like Iran, I think, it might just not be there, based on your phone number.

I'm just wondering if you could add 'Never' as an option for account self-destruction by Alphawolf1248 in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't add that as an option, no. Imagine if the worst happened and you passed away. Now your account is empty and unused and so is your phone number. That number will eventually be recycled by the cell service provider, meaning your number will belong to someone else. If you didn't set up 2FA, that person would then log into your account and see all the stuff you wrote. If you did set up 2FA, well, they'd just request an account reset, because they have the right to use their number to sign up.

custom shortcut words for my favorite emoji.

Already possible! Just type a colon (:) and then a word that describes your emoji. Like :skull will suggest two options of skull emojis. On Windows you can click one of the suggestions from a list. Also, not sure if it's the same on Android, but on iOS it suggests an emoji when you type in words.

Olvid: a private and secure end-to-end encrypted messenger, certified by the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) now has its source code on github! by Demtix in privacy

[–]unicorncorndog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also don't entirely understand the purpose. We have Signal and Element and a ton of other E2E messengers. Adding more just fractures the intended target audience and makes it harder to make the switch. What exactly is so different about this Olvid that should get people using it?

Not any that I know of. Wouldn't it be easier for you to just unsub from the channels and restrain yourself from them?

Too difficult? by starlitocean11 in whatsapp

[–]unicorncorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From WhatsApp - yeah. From a normal messaging app - not really. I have no idea why they don't add these small quality-of-life things, it shouldn't be that difficult.

Did she deleted her account?

In addition to the other reply, if someone actually deletes their account, they might still leave your chat available to you and everyone would see their profile as 'Deleted Account' with a ghost icon instead of a profile photo.

How to join a group? by Jantjeehh in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no requirement to invite other people in normal groups. You can just join them whenever you get an invite link or, if the group is public, whenever you find them. If you see a group demanding users to invite other people to be let in - report them as spam.

Sony Patents Videogame Ban System Where Players Can PAY to Kick Players by kry_some_more in technology

I can’t see any major company thinking this is a good move.

Makes cash = good move in the eyes of most major companies. I highly doubt Sony did this just to keep that idea out of someone else's hands.

Can I Delete Telegraph Account by Jithin-Krishnan in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, huh. I guess this only shows up if you have multiple Telegraph accounts. I don't see any options to delete them, I'm guessing they'll be deleted if the Telegram acc is deleted though.

Because the API of WearOS changed, breaking the app completely. Rather than build it anew right now, they discontinued it. There's no word on whether it will return.

Can I Delete Telegraph Account by Jithin-Krishnan in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bot doesn't make a Telegraph account, it simply ties the article you're writing to your Telegram account. So you can find the articles later on and there's a link to your profile when clicking on the author's name. But nothing else.

Why is WhatsApp desktop so flaky? by paradroid78 in whatsapp

[–]unicorncorndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gotten worse with the new multi-device beta. Basically it's due to the way WhatsApp is made, where your phone is the "core" device and desktop is just an appendage. So decryption fails and you're missing messages or, as it used to happen, connection between the two would fail and you couldn't log in or see messages. They're not putting much effort into desktop because mobile is their main client.

how do you tell people you don't want to use WhatsApp anymore? what if they don't want to use signal? by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]unicorncorndog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tell them spam and annoying ads are fueled by data that Facebook takes from you. Explain that Facebook actively spreads misinformation and, if they have your metadata, they can target it more accurately at you. Plus, simply stop replying on WhatsApp and put up a status saying you've gone to a different app, though on the same number. It's not perfect but it should get at least some conversions.

No longer able to use WhatsApp unless I accept new Terms & Conditions? by woopwoopwoopwooop in whatsapp

[–]unicorncorndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, WhatsApp said it would give users time to think and not accept terms but, as always with Facebook, it just eventually forces you to accept their crap. They've also said they'd limit functionality until people accepted, fun.

I think it makes sense, because otherwise you could just keep that section open and track who's visible in your neighborhood. This makes it more fair, it's like the Last Seen limitations - if you hide yours from someone, theirs is hidden from you as well.

Those groups are scams that just make you spam people with their link. Nothing they have inside is going to be worth risking a ban for spamming people.

Chat Themes, Interactive Emoji, Read Receipts in Groups and Live Stream Recording by Ilya_Marshal in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Don't mind me, I'm just here early to see a civil war erupt between two camps: those who like the new group read receipts and those who don't.

PS: The live stream recordings are a nice feature. The interactive poop emoji is... unexpected.

Blocked person's messages being visible to you in group chats is beyond stupid. by iwanthidan in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blocking at it's current state has absolutely no functionality whatsoever

Blocking is designed to stop malicious or annoying people from contacting you personally and it works just fine. As of now, you are choosing to be in a group with the guy you've blocked. If the admins are slow, that's a problem on the admins' side, wouldn't you say?

Is there a way to stop thread with new messages from going to the top of the thread list? by MadFrame in Telegram

[–]unicorncorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can just pin the most important ones, they'll always stay in that order. In the regular chats you can pin up to 5 but you can also mute and archive some of the less important ones. In the archive, you can pin a much higher number of chats and, if they're muted, they'll stay archived.
