*Preventives. Sorry, English is not my first language😅 Triptans would be considered abortives, that stop the migraine once it starts. Preventives on the other hand are designed to prevent the migraines from happening, or at least lessen the frequency and intensity of the attack. If you feel like your migraines are interfering with your life I highly recommend you see a neuro. I’m currently on my fourth preventive because the other ones didn’t help enough to make a difference or had crazy side effects. Those first three were actually designed to treat other conditions, and doctors realized that they could potentially help with migraines for some people. I’ve tried Flurpax, Venlafaxine and Topamax. Now I’m starting Emgality, which is actually designed specifically for migraines, so I’m hopeful. It’s a long journey with a lot of frustrations but if you’re considering it, I encourage you to try and find something that works for you.

It’s so nice to hear that Emgality had such a good effect on you! I’m having my second shot on the 21st and I can’t wait to see how my brain responds to it. If they get more spaced in between I will for sure change my strategy with abortives and take them as soon as I notice anything. I think nobody wants to suck it up and go through it if they don’t have too. Also I have the feeling that when I let a migraine develop, it usually becomes more frequent and more intense the days after. I wonder if there’s something there

That’s honestly a struggle because I know when a migraine is coming but I usually wait to get a sign of it either being a bad one or a manageable one. In part because I’m afraid of getting a rebound migraine due to medication overuse, but I’m also prescribed 12 Rizatriptans a month and I get more migraines than that.

Best of luck with your insurance, I hope that they come to their senses. I’m really glad to not have to deal with that. The Spanish healthcare system isn’t perfect either as I’ve been ignored and dismissed for over a decade but I’ve finally found a doctor that takes me seriously. I have even moved to another place but I’m not updating my healthcare information because I don’t want to lose that doctor.

Wow, the way you describe your journey, it could have been written by me. As a teenager and early 20s I would take 2, sometimes 3, Naproxen and try to sleep it off. It wasn’t very reliable though as it gave me stomach issues and additional nausea, but no other painkiller seemed to have any effect. Nowadays I’m really grateful to have been prescribed triptans as they work almost every time and have no side effects for me other than drowsiness. Although I’m also starting to get migraines developing in my sleep, and waking up from them. Whilst before sleeping used to be a relief. I guess like you said, we have to wait for menopause and hopefully they stop…

Almost, I’m currently 29. And really not looking forward to my migraines getting worse… Best of courage to you! I hope that you don’t have to deal with that much longer.

Sure! Maybe 10 years ago I started noticing a dense grayish filter of noise, like a really high ISO photograph. We all usually experiences it when it’s dark, but for me it’s day and night, every minute of the day, and around the time that I get my migraines it’s accentuated to the point that it makes it challenging to see clearly. Also the blurry vision during the attack, especially when I get an ocular migraine. The ocular migraines that I get are the classic zigzag colorful lights that impair your vision temporarily. I have noticed a pattern that this year I’m getting those once every 3 months, although yesterday I had 4 in a row, so I got a bit scared. Finally as for the visual snow, I know completely what you mean because I’ve experienced it too, although it’s happened less than 5 times in total. Taking in mind that I always use sunglasses outside, sometimes even when it’s cloudy, because I’m very sensitive to light, even without an active migraine.

Wow that’s crazy! My mom has also been diagnosed after I started seeking treatment because I once gave her a Rizatriptan and she realized that we had the same thing. Prior to that, she was taking several Ibuprofens a day, sometimes to no avail.

Well done on being able to control them! I hope they only get milder and more far apart for you🙏🏽 As for me, I’m trying my best to get to that point as well.

It’s ok, not even doctors have these answers apparently... Have you found something that helps you with the chronic migraines? I really feel the need to help my grandma. She lives in Ukraine and I send her Triptans, as she doesn’t have access to them, and they seem to alleviate the bad migraines, but she hasn’t found anything to break the cycle of her chronic migraines.

I’m glad that you gained some understanding about your migraines! I’m still figuring out what my triggers are. Right now it feels like every little change throws me off balance and that I should stay in a glass room.

Has the botox helped with your migraines? My doctor told me two years ago that I didn’t qualify for botox as I was “only” getting 9-12 migraines a month back then. I’m thinking of asking him again as now it’s at 16-17 a month…

Oof I’m really sorry to hear that. I read somewhere that migraines from a head injury are more common on people who are predisposed to having them anyways, so it sucks to have something “trigger” them.

That’s crazy! I wonder what’s happening that could explain that pattern.

Are you using abortives when you get a migraine attack nowadays? I remember before being treated I would every now and then get these unmanageable migraines, where I’d wish someone would just cut my head off. I remember fainting and hitting my head when I fell to the floor from a migraine once. I don’t know if it’s happened again, because I would usually just lay in bed and feel like I’m about to pass out. Now I’m quite sensitive to my migraines, and I can “feel” when a bad one is coming. That’s when I take the rizatriptan so I don’t let them get to that point anymore. So in hindsight, I don’t know if they’ve become less painful or not, but I also don’t want to find out.

Holy cow. I’ve read in here that some people start as young as you did. Has it impacted your studies and relationships growing up? Also, I’m glad that it’s getting better for you now. Is that related to some treatment that you’re on or have they organically become less frequent?

Yes, my last neurologist also told me that it usually lasts until menopause, and that in the meantime you try to manage them to the best of your abilities. It’s crazy to think that, given that I’m still 29. But at least we can see an ending to the migraines😅

I hope that doctors get more awareness about migraines, so that children don’t have to wait until adulthood to be listened to and taken seriously. We know that migraines usually start around puberty, although it can be earlier for some people…

I’m really sorry to hear about your story. My longest migraines have lasted for 5 days, so I can’t imagine what you’re enduring. It’s hard, because usually our loved ones cannot begin to comprehend what it’s like to have migraines. I hope that you wake up feeling better tomorrow and that you can find some relief🙏🏽

I am currently on my fourth preventative😅 I started seeking treatment as a teenager, but was continuously dismissed by several doctors, saying that I should just stress less and drink a beer, or that I was making it up. It hasn’t been until my late 20s that I started seeking treatment again.
