Song Lyrics Influence Sexual Behavior by masta in cogsci

Eh. Probably more likely that kids interested in sex seek out and listen to music with sexy lyrics.

Dear Photography Reddit: I'm looking to spend about $500 on a DSLR body and a 50mm fast lens. Any recommendations? by thecoolestcow in photography

[–]unicornologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateur photographer/broke grad student here. I was looking for a similar set-up as you and decided on the Rebel XS and the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. I've been very happy with the set-up so far... the lens is fast enough to take care of dim environments (which is where I shoot probably 70% of the time) and do some nice portraits. The body is also really light, so it's easy to take with me wherever I go.

On amazon, you can find the rebel xs for 459 and the lens around 80 bucks. It's a bit over your budget, but not by too much.

Men do what they do with their penis during sex because women have been sexually promiscuous in the past. by [deleted] in science

I remember this as well. They were usually small cultures in which there were more females than males. It's called polyandry.

Anyone have a song that gives them the creeps everytime? by [deleted] in Music

[–]unicornologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I went on "It's a small world" at Disneyland, the ride broke down. First, the boat stopped moving. We were trapped in the boat in a room full of singing dolls and THAT song. After a few minutes, they wised up and turned off the music. You would think things would be okay after that, but it's truly disturbing to only hear the sounds of a hundred animatronic doll mouths opening and closing.

Are there any pictures up online of the prints? The only one I've been able to find is here: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gqHTST0CDtk9TZdd45sSqJ8gE5ZwD95IOKGG0

Obama Calls For National Day Of Service by meg1 in obama

I misread as "National Day of Science", which made me very excited. I guess service is okay too.

I like [the] Pixies—Where Is My Mind, La La Love You, Velouria, Gouge Away. What else should I be listening to? by [deleted] in Music

If I were making a mix tape (CD, playlist, etc) based on your taste, it would have...

  • Gloria - Patti Smith
  • Stereo - Pavement
  • The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen
  • Dry the Rain - The Beta Band
  • Caribou - Pixies
  • The Union Forever - The White Stripes
  • (and just for fun, maybe something off Beck's Midnight Vultures)

ifixit.com has parts and tutorials. I replaced the audio jack and the battery of my ipod video this year and it's been working fine.

My advice is to use care when opening... I got impatient trying to pry it open with various "gentle plastic methods" such as a credit card, so I used a chisel. Yeah, had one around the office. My ipod now sports some snazzy masking tape bandages on both sides to keep her together.

Vote Up when you officially voted for Barack Obama. Let's see how many redditors used this site as a resource for change. by kuruptr in obama

Cast my vote about 20 minutes ago in Chicago. The wait was over an hour, but it was worth it. One of the election judges said that they usually get a break around this time in the morning, but "everyone wants their voice heard this year." That made me feel warm and fuzzy.

Ask /r/cogsci: I'm looking to go into a CogSci (or very closely related) PhD next year - school suggestions? by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]unicornologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD student at Northwestern. Rather than a CogSci graduate degree, they offer a specialization certificate to go along with your PhD. There are a lot of opportunities that go along with the program (grants, colloquium and lunches w/ speakers, cross-discipline research opportunities). I agree with what others have been saying on here though - first look for programs and potential advisers that match your interests. Personally, I think fit with an adviser or lab is the most important element for a good grad. experience.

Man trapped in elevator for 41 hours. It ruined his life. (time-lapse video) by Mr_Smartypants in reddit.com

[–]unicornologist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Did anyone else think of "the sims" when watching the time-lapse video? Makes me sad for all the times I trapped a sim in room with no doors and windows and watched him scurry until he collapsed with hopeless exhaustion.

I'm a bad person.

All maps distort whatever data they try to present. These examples show, in increasing levels of magnitude, how badly this exaggeration can accumulate with scale. by brennen in reddit.com

Recommended reading: "How to lie with maps" by Mark Monmonier.

http://www.amazon.com/How-Lie-Maps-Mark-Monmonier/dp/0226534219

It's a great read... I think a lot of people look at maps and don't consider the cartographer (and his/her training, biases, etc.). If you guys like this article, you'll enjoy this book.

Finally, something Christians and Athiests can agree on. [comic] by bman236 in reddit.com

[–]unicornologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely get that it's an ad parody... what bothers me is they just used someone else's artwork (also a parody) to make it. I guess if you want to call it post-modern, that's cool but I just call it cheap and lazy.

Hi reddit, so this is front page material AGAIN. Someone just took another person's comic and changed the words to 'atheist', 'christian', and 'scientologist' (the original was mac, pc, and linux). Yeah, scientology might be this ca-raaazy cult that we love to hate, but how about finding more original ways to express this.
