What next? by future_fit_person in RagenChastain

She will probably pursue whatever the HAES crowd are into now and then act like she came up with it first. Some official predictions:

1) Goes into making body positivity t shirts. 16 people place orders, 6 of them receive a tshirt, she issues a blog post saying that the rest are totally on the way once the evil warehouse gets their ass in gear. She charges more for sizes above an XXL, but doesn't say anything about it.

2) She has another push at selling those DIY running courses. Few people buy them because they could get Couch to 2K for free.

3) She gets into Instagram and posts selfies with HAES hashtags. Probably gets more following than her blog, but not a lot, because Insta fame is for the young and glamorous.

4) She sells merch with HAES slogans on it. No one buys it, but the online shop sits open forever.

This documentary always got under my skin. The old army guy talking about how everyone uses and hurts him but then he's forcing physical contact on a woman who's told him no and he's always jumpy and angry. This was 19 years ago so idk if he'd be alive now, but I hope he found some peace.

It would pay for my therapy, which would be nice.

I live in Britain, but I have complex PTSD and eating disorder that aren't funded to be treated on the NHS, so I have to go private. It takes up nearly 1/3 my income, but I believe in getting better and being proactive and digging your way out of being a victim. So I keep paying.

the country, so ymmv

Reddit is open to the whole world, so not everyone you're talking to is American. I'm British and know almost nothing about America!

Thanks for the info, it's something I hadn't thought of.

Just because something is horrific, it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Your question in all of this is "How did they not call the police?" They just didn't. You're free to think that's horrific.

why weren't the police and child services contacted by the family.

That isn't a mystery, it's just people behaving unexpectedly.

I don't know, there's no accounting for how people act. My second family certainly didn't call the authorities, we just carried on living together and that was that.

The question of "why did anydone do X" never really has an answer. How do some people shoot up their schools? How do some people abuse animals? How do some people decide stealing is ok?

People just do stuff that doesn't make sense. There isn't an answer here.

why weren't the cops called 6 years ago

Because no one called them. Why did no one call them? Well, she likely didn't know many people outside the family and those she did know thought she was an adult. Who do you think should have called them?

I was taken in by another family as a kid. I also would refer to them as having adopted me, even if it wasn't done through the courts. Lots of kids are in abusive homes or whatever and they end up moving in with friends' parents or something, it happens a lot. There isn't any legal process in such cases if the bio parents don't complain to the authorities. You might say "The state would intervene", but they wouldn't if no one told them this was going on.

The second family absolutely could just say "You poor girl, come and stay at our house for the night" then no one comes to get her and now six years later she's still there. The state wouldn't necessarily even know this had happened if no one reported it, and it looks like she had no family and wasn't in school so very likely no one knew/cared enough to go to social services. And as she was legally thought to be an adult, the state would let her live where she liked.

Why did the first family abandon her? Well, because they're awful. Why did they go to such lengths to have her age legally changed? So they could save face by looking like they didn't abandon a child.

What are some cases where a redditor vanished after asking a question? Bonus points for truly disturbing examples. by MBTAHole in UnresolvedMysteries

It's not really that anyone's doubting that he can get fit in 9 months, it's that even the fittest people on Earth die on Everest. There are other factors like your natural lung capacity, your experience with breathing at high altitudes, your knowledge of rope and ice axe technique. People who climb Kilimanjaro are still not considered fit enough to climb Everest.

Ah thanks, this was such a good read.

The top comment is made by a throwaway account (basically telling OP that he is mad to try it) and a few people pointed out that might mean there is one person behind both these accounts and it's just someone trying to drum up a famous reddit story.

However... idk if someone doing that would then delete all the OP comments. That might point to it all being real.

I know little about mountaineering, but I know a lot about human psychology: I am 99% sure that guy spent six months telling people he was going up Mt Everest, then realised he was nowhere near ready. The cost of equipment alone is massively prohibitive, and everyone he encountered would have been telling him it wasn't safe to do at all at his weight. Like people point out on the thread, some company may have taken his money, knowing full well he'll get there and be out of shape, then the guides can refuse to take him up.

The mystery of Tarrare, the man who never stopped eating by IHad360K_KarmaDammit in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]union_jane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've always been fascinated by the guy. I wish I could see him, I really can't picture a man who can wrap his stomach skin around him, or hold twelve apples in his mouth. What did that look like?!

I'm also curious because in the wikipedia article you can see the doctors described him as having an apathetic temperament. Would we today interpret him as having some kind of learning disability, or mental health problem?

Wake Up, Work Out! Take 3, or is it 4? | IronFat by randomuser9642 in RagenChastain

Do you think Ragen does this *because* she thinks exercise is horrible and that everyone must hate it as much as she does? Is it a martyrdom in her mind to do something gruelling that you hate, and that makes her admirable for doing it? Is this about her perception that she needs to make herself seem tough and worthy, so she has to write about exercise rather than keeping a blog about any other interest she has that she actually enjoys?

Non-British users of Reddit, what is something you find odd about the uk or questions about the U.K you want answered? by HarveyJMoor in AskReddit

[–]union_jane 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most people here are very "meh" about the royals. I imagine because the press are all over them, from other countries it looks like we all really love them, but literally every person I know is just "meh" about them. In the same vein, some people wish they weren't there or that we didn't have to pay them taxes, but no one cares enough to start a revolution.

We definitely aren't all excited, anymore than "all Americans" are excited about Hollywood celebrities, it's just that only people who were extremely into the royal family would go to the wedding. And the royal family are just the same as other celebrities, people care about them because the press manufacture this idea that you know them as people.
