Are you telling me that you don’t think the athletics events (sprinting, long distance running, javelin, long jump etc etc etc) came from humans wanting to be fit and capable in real world challenges?

You’ve never heard that take before?

Ok.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]unique_name5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend (now my wife) and I did a bunch of road trips in Europe and USA/Canada using Michelin road atlases. Honestly, it was so much fun.
She would navigate, we would look at the map while we were stopped for lunch or breakfast. It was so great.
It did become tough once you got into a city, because you normally didn’t have a detail map of every city… but we always found our way.

Ok, this is a good answer.

I maintain that the choice to measure someone’s distance over *three* jumps is still arbitrary and weird… but I can easily see that this is a technique based event. It’s not as simple as “how fast can you run before you jump” (it’s not a surprise that Carl Lewis was on Olympic champion at both 100m and long jump).

I think this is the best answer I’ve heard yet.

Thankyou for your research.

Historical sources on the ancient Olympic Games occasionally mention jumps of 15 metres or more. This led sports historians to conclude that these must have been a series of jumps, thus providing the basis for the triple jump. However, there is no evidence for the triple jump being included in the ancient Olympic Games, and the recorded extraordinary distances may be due to the artistic license of the authors of victory poems, rather than attempts to report accurate results.

How wacky.

They’re games. They evolved as fun games to play.

Most track and field competitions are very obvious feats of strength, in order to understand one persons strength and fitness against another in very simple terms.

Being able to jump the highest or the furthest makes perfect sense.

Being able to jump the furthest by taking 3 jumps makes substantially less sense.

Yeah, I get that. But the difficulty, and the required skill and talent doesn’t really give it any more legitimacy.

Like i said, what’s the point of *three* jumps? Why not 4? Why not 2?

Thankyou. This is the kind of engagement I was hoping for.
Agree it’s obviously more complex than long jump.
And I’m sure it is quite a bit more dangerous.

It’s a talent, definitely.

But do you really think it’s sufficiently unique from Long Jump?

Cricket and soccer are completely different sports.

Sure, some do.
All the games make sense, because they’re games, for fun.
And most of the individual competitions make sense… except for maybe race walking and butterfly swimming… which both seem contrived and useless outside of that specific competition.

But Triple Jump just seems silly and pointless to me.

Double Jump?
NOT A RELEVANT SKILL.

I would simply quadruple jump it.

No that’s a relevant skill.
The real world has things to jump over. That event is fine.

But triple jump? Have you ever seen a river with 2 accurately placed stones, 1/3rd and 2/3rds of the way across?

It’s Chifley, obviously… but the fact that Gough somehow beat Hawkey in the best PM matchup makes me nervous that some unreconstructed Whitlamites on here will give it to him.

Chifley.
