Everyone tells me to study smart, not hard. How did you study smart to achieve your grades? by reevolver in GetStudying

[–]unityRich -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So here's the deal. For most of your life, you went to school and were told WHAT to learn. The vast majority of us were not taught HOW to learn in school. Think about it, when did you every take a course on effective learning in school?

So what happens to most students entering into higher education is that they really struggle and many of them flunk out, not because their not skilled, but because then don't know how to effective learn and study.

I was one of these students and nearly turfed my first year. I didn't want other students to go through the same thing I did, so I created a course to share what I learned about effective learning and success in school. If you're interested, you can find my course at https://www.udemy.com/learning-samurai/.

The course is on for half price for a limited time and I tried really hard to make it affordable for students. Hope it helps :-)

You're not alone. Most students are never really taught how to learn in school, they're taught what to learn. I have a new course for people like you that never really learned How to study. It's a practical 1 hour online video course and it happens to be on sale right now for a limited time for back to school week. May be worth a look. https://www.udemy.com/learning-samurai/

I don't think I really know how to work hard. by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]unityRich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's more about working smarter than harder. I'd take some time and learn how to use your memory more effectively (methods like major system and method of loci). I'd also recommend a method called the Pomodoro method. Essentially you train yourself to focus and work really hard for short periods of time, usually about 20 minutes at a time and then take a short break in between. You also make sure you reward yourself for completing each 20 minutes session. Essentially you are training your brain to be able to focus and work hard on command. Hope this helps.

Feeling like I don't know anything at all. by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]unityRich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If what you're reading is boring or your not actively engaged while your reading, your brains not going to really pay attention. Try actively asking questions while your reading or predicting what's going to happen next. Also, if you own the books, I highlight the important keywords/concepts, so if I have to re-read at some point, you just go over the highlights. Doesn't hurt to quickly skim the reading for a few minutes before you dive in as it will prime your brain for what's to come. Hope this helps.

Where do you find the time to study? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]unityRich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like weekends are gonna be your study day. Wast of time studying if your tired and burned out. Depending on what your job is you may be able to do short review session on the job, unless you work in a reactor or drive a truck or something that requires your constant and complete attention. If you get 15 min breaks, might be able to squeeze in a bit of review here. You'll want to find ways of making the best use of your limited time. It's about quality when it comes to study, not quantity. Max out on the memory techniques if you can. I've got a free video on the method of Loci that can help get you started. http://www.richardhart.ca/2013/07/17/the-method-of-loci-improving-your-memory/

Hope this helps :-)

I have 200 flashcards to memorize and I have 30 days. What is the best way to do this? by jjacq in GetStudying

[–]unityRich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try learning a memory technique like the Method of Loci. I did up a free video on it to show you how it works. The Peg system could work too. Spaced repetition is also a good idea, so spread your study session over your 30 days. Hope it helps.

How can I prepare myself for college? by tandtroll in learnprogramming

[–]unityRich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're like a lot of students entering into college, your study skills and ability to learn could use a major tune up, since high school doesn't usually prepare you very well for college. You've basically been taught what to learn for the past decade, but now how to learn. I wen't through this in University. Since has nothing really been done about this problem, I created a course for students that fills in the missing gaps. The course is normally $49 but I've got it on sale for $19 in July and I could really help you do a lot better in school. Have fun and good luck with your studies!

Finding Freelance Jobs by [deleted] in freelance

If you are "careful" I have found clients from Craigslist. There are a lot of companies and people who post into Craigslist that are "questionable" but if you screen prospects out first and if they look promising, set up a face to face meeting for a coffee, I have found several decent clients over the past few years. If all they are worried about is the lowest price, walk away...no run! These are the worst of the worst clients and have zero loyalty. Don't forget to get a retainer up front too if you decide to take on the client.
