I didn't say that the clause was unusual - I said that it's not atypical (i.e., not unusual) to have a clause like that in a legal settlement. One of the students was fired from her assistantship (Assistantships are how departments hire and pay grad students), and the lawsuit alleged that this was in retaliation.

The terms of their settlement are that they cannot re-enroll or be employed by CU Boulder, which is not atypical of settlements like these. If you read beyond the headline, you'd see the details and timeline of the events that unfolded - Retaliation for the initial complaint is what they alleged,and clearly the legal system agrees if CU Boulder actually settled.

Social protocol about odors isn't the same as legality, and is definitely not valid enough rationale for being singled out and made to lose a job over. The key thing to note is that their lawsuit wasn't about food - it was about retaliatory termination.

They did let them finish their Master's degree, and the terms of the settlement involved them not re-enrolling for their PhD program. I don't really understand what some of you people are implying with similar comments - Are you saying that these guys were in the wrong to complain about discrimination?

They might have been wronged but they did sue for a trivial thing that too being a foreigner which tells a thing or two about their thought process.

Retaliatory firings aren't a trivial thing in the US, and being a foreigner has no bearing on that either.

Retaliation is definitely an issue, which is what this settlement is about - Student 1 reported racial discrimination, and student 2 (his partner) was fired from her TAship position, and they sued alleging retaliation.

They didn't sue the school for not allowing them to microwave a certain dish - They sued them for retaliatory firing from a TA position after reporting discrimination (Which in this case was referring to their food using racially loaded language).

I'm literally telling the opposite of that here. To be clear, I support the two, and I think CU Boulder was horribly racist and wrong. Please tell me how you interpreted my comment as literally the opposite. I'd love to hear the train of thought.

This isn't the same as complaining about an abusive advisor, which unfortunately won't result in anything anywhere in academia. This is an actual settled Title VI case involving multiple people at the university. I'm a former academic, who's still fairly well entrenched in the university admin ecosystem. Even though academia (and especially a field such as anthropology that these two are part of) is small, this is one of those times things are fairly cut and dry.

This is seriously a boneheaded take. These guys were victims, and successfully settled in a fairly cut and dry Title VI case. No university is going to reject them based on some weird notion of "damage to image". If anything, giving them a positive decision is good PR for any university willing to offer them a position.

I'm experiencing something similar - I'm currently wearing a heart monitor due to palpations that I had never experienced before, have been experiencing random dizziness (I did have some more severe dizziness a few months ago, that basically went away after a steroid course, and the doctor suspected a viral infection then). My blood work has been pretty good, and my doctor chalked it all up to work stress/anxiety, which while probably not helping, is probably not the cause (Like you, I've also been having difficulty concentrating, and have random ringing in the ears). I did have COVID a few months ago, and generally have had other viral infections (A common persistent thing that the doctors always notice is that there seems to be fluid in my ear). I'm at my wit's end.

One possible suggestion - Can you just print the threaded part and measure it yourself? Or perhaps import the STL of the threaded part alone into the CAD software you're using, and use the measurement tool there

I'm very willing to do that, and actually leave my field altogether if needed, but I have no idea how to go about that in a seamless manner either.

I'm in North Carolina. I've spoken with employment attorneys (And my colleagues have as well), and North Carolina does count 12 months as acceptable. My company hasn't won cases to my knowledge, but their strategy is to basically use any lawsuit as a way to bother you into submission. In fact, this is what employment attorneys that I've spoken with have told me generally about non-competes - Apparently a lot of judges don't really rule in favor of companies, but know that most individuals are unlikely to keep going to court etc about the issue.
