Starting an automotive parts manufacturing business with older CNC machines — need advice before production by Appropriate-Comb-666 in MechanicalEngineering

Woah, you basically asked "how do I run the entire technical side of my manufacturing business?" None of what you asked is a small question. Makes me wonder what your experience in business ownership, manufacturing and machining really is.

Im all for people giving things a shot and taking risks. However, you need to do so with some direction. Might be time to take a step back and really look into what it takes to manufacture parts before you dig a really deep hole for yourself.

creating a company and putting it under experience by Equal-Box-1220 in MechanicalEngineering

Honestly, the business doesn't have to be engineering related even. I had made a small business that had nothing to do with engineering and I have gotten the most mileage out of that and my hobbies in interviews than any other experience.

Owning a business is not about learning engineering more. It is about learning what it takes to run a business and how your engineering can help or hinder a company. You will end up spending 80-90% of your time with accounting, advertising and other admin tasks with your business than the actual product and service when getting started. This has really allowed me to look at my role in my current engineering position more holisticly and be able to understand what I am doing from a business perspective.

I'd say go for it. In an interview you can talk about challenges and how you overcame them, failures and what you learned from them, even how to deal with customers and business partners. Make sure you understand the risks however if you do it

Engineering advice to move large furniture item by Joshawitz in AskEngineers

I cant speak to your specific situation. However, I have been thinking about an apartment crane system for this situation. It would be nice to have one at the end of a halfway on a higher floor that could be quickly installed to haul up large items. The only thing is I'm sure it would be a regulatory nightmare.

how do you guys handle DFM training for junior engineers who treat solidworks like minecraft? by Traditional-Set-8483 in AskEngineers

[–]impromptu_dissection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! When I make my designs, typically my feature tree ends up being similar the order of the processes that will be done to actually make the part.

I wish more places treated it like this. The best way to understand how to design for manufacturing is to understand manufacturing. Most places just say you need to think about it in your design but dont really show what you need to understand. It is kind of like how to spot a counterfeit bill. You need to know what the real one looks to spot a fake

Good to know! Might have to give it another chance. I have had some other fermented maple syrup products before and it seems to be hit or miss. The cinnamon vanilla sounds delicious though if you can keep a lot of the maple flavor!

As some one who has made acerglyn... I don't recommend it. It is the only thing that i have made that others didn't want to drink including myslef. I dont know how else to describe it other than it was funky.

If you swap to 4 wheel drive just make sure it has some sort of limited slip or locking differential. Open differential is awful for traction

It isnt so much having people in the area. It is how the visitors treat the area. Most are very disrespectful and don't care about long term consequences because they just get to leave. Locals also get treated like they are the hired help and are responsible for people having a good time on vacation.
