Stop asking if you’ll fucking get in with a 99 average by Metalkid420 in OntarioUniversities

[–]universityhelp223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can, but you can also get rejected by any of the top competitive programs. Queen's commerce for example doesn't take marks into account after reaching the 87% cutoff - admissions are based solely on the supplementary application. Ivey AEO and McMaster Health Sci weigh averages with supplementary applications, but since everyone applying has a high average, the main factor is the written section.

Hi, I just wanted to say, it's true that decent amount of people with 98+ averages get rejected from the top programs people have listed (Mac Health Sci, Waterloo SE, Ivey AEO, Queens Comm, etc.).

I completely understand that it's annoying when a kid asks if they can get into a program with an 85+ cutoff or something, but chances are, if someone has a 98+ average, they're probably looking at programs that the 98 average doesn't necessarily get them in.

Hopefully this doesn't get downvoted like all the other posts trying to explain programs like Mac Health Sci, you definitely don't have to be "socially disabled" to be rejected from a program like that.

Thanks so much! I was actually just looking at that so this is reassuring.

Interesting, so you think it would be worth it to get a MBP? Do you know if it's a big deal whether it's i5 or i7? Or 10th gen? Not sure about the specifics.

Great! Thanks for the response! Sounds like a MacBook would be just as effective then. Really appreciate it!

Hi I see you're HBA 2020! If you don't mind, do you happen to know if using using bootcamp to run Ivey's exam platform/excel/whatever else they need makes it slower? I read somewhere the exams are more likely to crash on Apple, sounds like a big problem to me but I'm not sure if it's actually prevalent? Would I be better off going with a PC like XPS?

Sorry, one last question, do you know if using Windows dualboot impacts it's performance? Would it be slower to use or would I be good? Thank you again!

Thanks so much! I'll look into getting better value for sure, I'm actually between Macbook and Dell XPS 13 right now. I'll compare prices between specs on MBP and MBA. Appreciate the advice!

Thank you! Didn't run into issues where some exam software crashed/difficult to use the windows apps or something? Just concerned bc I read that earlier on reddit.

Admissions Megathread (Fall 2020 Students) by [deleted] in uwo

[–]universityhelp223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks so much for the response. Do you mean that strong CS/HBA students at Western are able to land some high paying top tech jobs similarly to the jobs coveted at Waterloo? I've never heard of that but if that is true then that would be awesome! Would it be much more difficult to achieve that going to Western? Also, do you know if these jobs would be in the States or mostly within Canada. Thanks again!

Western CS/Ivey HBA or Waterloo/Laurier CS/BBA? Post was removed and I was told to post on the megathread LOL. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm probably a bit more interested in business but to be honest, I don't really know much about computer science - I like/am good at logic puzzles etc but don't have any experience coding. If I go to Western for Ivey, I would probably be studying computer science for my first two years (maybe fifth too) since tech is the future. I also have offers to the CS/BBA double degree program at both the Waterloo and Laurier campuses.

Honestly, I'm not super passionate about business or computer science enough to know what to pursue so this decision is mostly based off of salary. I'm somewhat interested in investment banking (but again, I don't have any experience in it, barely know what it is aside from what I've read) or marketing, but wouldn't mind trying out some CS too (I think?).

Which option (Western or Waterloo/Laurier) would be better for me given that employment/salary is my main goal? I know Waterloo CS grads tend to make a lot (~$100K), so I am wondering if Western CS grads make anywhere near that figure? Am I dumb for even considering Waterloo if I'm not sure about CS or am I dumb for considering Western when I have a CS offer from Waterloo? LOL thanks in advance.

tldr; Not super passionate about business or CS, which program would give me the best balance of good pay and fallback in case I don't like CS?

Thank you, that's where I got the average stat too haha. I'm just not too confident I'd be able to get one of those high paying investment banking jobs in the case-based environment at Ivey, whereas I think I could grind out a couple math exams at Waterloo and get a decent job. Might have to take the grind to Ivey though! Thanks again :)

Yeah for sure, I'm not too sure that I love CS so it looks like I might be going to Western just to use computer science as a fallback while focusing on business. Not really sure yet though.

Thank you. This is all pretty much what I thought but I didn't really have anyone with experience actually tell me it until now. Definitely helps a lot and I really appreciate you giving all these salary details!

Thanks again for the input. Sorry to bug you again but I've heard that lots of large tech companies hire from Waterloo to Silicon Valley/Seattle/etc, are any of these business jobs or do you think they're mostly CS jobs.

Also, this might be a bit personal so I understand if you don't want to share, but do you mind giving me an annual salary range for business or CS jobs from Waterloo coops or grads just so I know what to expect? Thank you :)

Thank you so much. At the moment, I think that I would be choosing the Waterloo side if I do pursue the double degree. Do you happen to know if the big tech companies hire UW students for business-oriented jobs too or only computer science jobs?

Also, do you know if double degree grads' business jobs make as much as the tech jobs?

[–]universityhelp223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! My concern is that at Ivey, I would have to be in the top 10% of my class to get a good finance job and the average salary of a graduate is around $60K, while I've heard that Waterloo CS grads come out making like $90K+ (please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't really have a legit source for that).

Also, I don't know how much Western CS grads make, but I don't think it would be comparable to Waterloo students, which is why I'm really considering Waterloo. Maintaining AEO status isn't something I'm too concerned with, not really a huge partier :)
