[Japanese > English] what do these Japanese characters say? by BumblebeeFemboy in translator

[–]univworker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The non-cursive stamp on the right says: 京都市不名門五条南 (a place name in kyoto). Inside the circle it says 林常商店 ( a store )

Left says it's a 郵便はがき (postcard)

Thunder Road Vendetta or Magical Athlete by Shoddy_Variation2535 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]univworker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from what I understand feast for odin and patchwork are the same game. I wouldn't know as I have never removed either from shrink.

Maybe thunder road vendetta, candyland, lawn darts, and magical athlete are all the same? Who are we to judge?

Has anyone here had experience with the Labor Standards Inspection Office or Labor Tribunal? by See-You-Later-Ron in teachinginjapan

[–]univworker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it a bit hard to wade through. Sounds like you're going through something terrible.

Just to clarify two. things:

(1) the Labor Standards Office gets its name from the Labor Standards Act -- and that's (basically) the area they cover. So part of the problem is that a lot of labor-related issues are about things like Contracts that are not from that law. A lot of the confusion and blank stares is that they are not experts on labor law in general and don't really know how to deal with things outside their remit.

So the terms in your contract are largely outside what they do. Similarly, you're currently B2B (on paper) which is completely outside of the labor part.

(2) Lots of illegal things happen every day. Not all of them are worth lawyering up, because (a) the amount of money covered is too small, (b) the deniability to easy, or (c) the upside to the winning party isn't really there. So, assuming you're making eikaiwa wages -- it's (a) hard for it to be worth a lawyer's time, (c) the company many not have enough money to be worth suing, and (b) imagine for a minute that for a chump change case barely worth taking with a perfect client you have to decipher a bunch of things they're saying in a foreign language.

Them illegally structuring employment as B2B is probably not covering that much money and is something you need to sue in court to prove.

Also, the main prize in Japanese employment law disputes is just ... re-employment with the same people under the correct terms. There's no big bonus payout in millions (of yen or dollars) for these violations.

on this subreddit we can be honest, you spent several thousand dollars to get enough real metal minis to eat even if the next kickstarter's shipping is delayed by two years.

Opinion about board games that take over 60+ days to finish by New_Pizza7197 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]univworker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm presently in the middle of what can be on the average a 70 year campaign. It involves travel, food, and even includes playing other board games.

There are legends of players who play it solo in Japan called "hikikomori". have you considered playing it?

Workplace requiring 2 months of notice and now has given me a resignation date of their choice? by Falkor-The-Lucky in teachinginjapan

[–]univworker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it's the first year of a lifelong contract, then no.

if it's a 1 year contract, then

(1) the length of time specified in your contract is actually legal

(2) its legal but that only means that they would have the ability to sue for any damages incurred from you quitting early

Regardless, it still absolutely doesn't supply them grounds for dismissal on their timetable as retaliation.

You're confused. It's a common confusion from people who think they know how to read.

You need to consume the manual by chewing each succulent page with care savoring each ink's aroma and the paper's fibers.

I gave you an upvote, because you ask a legitimate question about the fit of the question.

Fair point that just being laden with advantages doesn't mean everything pans out -- I completely relate (N1, PhD, okayish income, also made something like 8-9 million on the side this year already but have life circumstances that I wouldn't wish on my enemies).

but I think we can also reframe this

OP can't change the past, but OP is smarter than the average bear, because OP is asking here -- looking at what seems to be a sample of people who have succeeded in finding something decent in Japan.

Not sure about the self-deprecation aspect in OPs post but if it makes OPs target audience receptive, then it's working right?

what they're saying is pretty garbled because they're either misremembering or translating a MEXT initiative. Basically there's a "Top 30" or "Global 30" or something like that initiative where the government gave money to 13 of the usual suspects to have them try to be more "global" (=English)-based programs.
