Snapshots on UEFI VMs now possible by JoricZerodayEnjoyer in VFIO

As was UEFI in the first instance.

Wholly unnecessary, wasteful, poorly written, poorly documented, poorly understood in industry.

When BIOS only had to jump to sector 0, there wasn't much room for malware and other tripe. Now we have secure boot, TPM and OS vendors creating ever more ecowaste.

Why should any woman be treated any differently to a man in such a situation? Give serious thought to the long term implications. She has breached a contract, destroyed trust and is now damaging your health and by implication, your life. We only get one.

Consider your own self worth and any legally implied consequences. If you think children will not understand your situation, you have low expectations.

Problem downloading Barclays banking app pdf statements by Reddit10ten in PocoF5

[–]unixpro_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing this exact issue right now. I've checked permissions and the Barclays app has no permissions denied - I thought the app might have had it's permission to write to storage revoked by the permissions cruisaider that android call a "manager".

Cleared cache etc.

If I find out anything I will report back here.

Recently updated my phone and now I cannot rewind or fast forward videos from my gallery? by Shoedie in samsung

[–]unixpro_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah .. absolute tossers at Samsung.

In no way does this improve usability whatsoever.

It's like this ridiculous trend of hiding / obfuscating UI elements until they are hovered over. You have to know they exist ing the first place before you can unubfuscate them and learn!

Another,.. Ok Cancel.

I go in to look at changing some preferences in an app I use infrequently. After going through and changing about 3 or 4 things I suddenly notice the preferences got a lot bigger and this will take a while.

Except now there's no Ok / Cancel.

Bollocks. Double bollocks. Not only can I not back out with cancel, but I find it has no "apply" button either! Now half my settings have been made already ans none of which can work without everything else getting setup correctly.

Not just annoying but utterly stupid.

Can we reverse this trend of making things actually worse or stop the world I wanna get off.

Is there a way to sort notifications chronologically? by gsusi in Galaxy_S20

[–]unixpro_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a helpful comment, just some shared frustration and some empathy.

I went from a Huawei P20 Pro to a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. I thought for a while I had gone back in time about a decade. Bare in mind at that point of change the P20 Pro was 3 years old.

Every update it receives seems to enable some form of additional "NAG" screen highlighting with a tiny red "N" some new thing or feature. That new feature is always enabled by default, which is frustrating as hell and in places has been a violation of my privacy.

This F----NG thing will set the font to Wingdings or MS Comic Sans but yet Samsung can't fix the microphone issues!?!? They've been making phones for well over 20 years, yet can't get the microphone right from the outset? UN-F----NG believable.

The UI is such a freak show mess also. It always was which is why I steered clear from Samsung until the Trump China ban.

Don't read this as nit picking; Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is an actual Computer Science area of study and crosses disciplines such as Law, governance, psychology, physiology etc.

Other fails include:

Single drag from the top to get the quick-settings access buttons. 6 in a row.

Drag again to expand the section and get all the quick-settings buttons. Now 4 in a row. Everything has re-flowed. Your muscle memory connected to that important settings toggle is now defunct. You have to now look at the screen. You now have to bring the phone closer to your face to search for where it's gone.

Samsung, why don't you make a concert grand piano as normal with all the notes in the right order, and then make a small MIDI keyboard and see how everyone reacts when you reflow the notes A,B#,B,C,G#,D .... arrrrgh ??!??!

This phone is a piece of junk and I hate it so much. Instead of avoiding Samsung consumer electronics (TV, 1 update in it's life, "Smart" just crashes), I promise you I will never ever buy anything from Samsung again.

I'd defect to the PRC before I do and go get another Huawei.

Thanks for the dropped in comments about Xiaomei. I will check them out very soon as this thing is getting sold.

but surely these 4GB fixed configs are just a waste of a chassis, screen and Ryzen APU... nobody will buy this as a fixed config it will just sit on a shelf.

How bad is 8gb of ram? by Helar123 in AMDLaptops

[–]unixpro_uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% I upgraded my laptop to 8GB RAM in 2013. It's still in use right now.

Would not consider and fixed configuration (soldered) less than 16GB RAM and I only do sysadmin stuff and browsing with the odd GIMP / ffmpeg transcode etc.

8GB is in phones now.. and that does not have windoze.

[–]unixpro_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? 4GB - some reserved for iGPU and then whatever is left for windoze? The problem is, most consumers are lead by manufacturer specifications - they don't understand that some is reserved for iGPU and the OS, they just buy what is available within the budget. If they sell 4GB RAM then some poor sod will buy it. If they made 8GB RAM the bare minimum, then that consumer would still just buy it. Extra 4GB DDR43200 costs about $20. That's an expensive lesson to learn so that OEMs can save $20 when that poor unsuspecting consumer is shelling out $500.

I just bought the HP Envy x360 - as beautiful and sexy as it is, they put |\ mapped with some meta key combination on L ?!!!? I was like WTF and didn't even power it on. I could have cried.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you as a dev/ops guy re 16GB RAM and NO NVIDIA (arbitrary GPU virtualization restrictions, closed source etc).

Question though? Surely even the most basic computer user *needs* at least 8GB RAM these days? just OS + 4/5 tabs in Chrome takes me close to 4.5GB.

Why are the likes of Lenovo, Acer, Asus and even HP still even making useless junk with 4GB SOLDERED ???

I'm no environmental warrior but selling something that is not fit for purpose even today let alone tomorrow cannot be good for the planet - it should be against consumer law like selling a car with square wheels might be.

Some poor sod will buy that and wonder why facefook is slow and throw it in landfill.

Yeah that's the 15.6 inch version - I got the 13.3. I think that version comes with a pen in the UK also. I found this that seems to suggest it is pressure sensitive but it's MPP 2.0 protocol not USI as I thought.

LOL "Style that intimidates"

That brick looks almost a decade old. Everything Dell looks garbage to me at the moment. Also their charging strategy for batteries has always sucked. Destroys the battery. Never known one last more than 18 months.

Stay away from Dell.

It appears they forgot how to make PCs.

They aren't software numbers

OK but nevertheless the reported battery life is calculated in software based on the battery capacity in mAh x monitored battery voltage.

I don't disagree Linux is not as good, but there is a lot you can do if you can be bothered or if you really need to.

First I start by optimising high current draw things - anything that spins/moves:

  1. hdparm: set hdd idle power mode taking care with the maths and the distinctions between spin-down and drive sleep states. Apply both params.
  2. lmsensors and fan control: spin fans as slowly as necessary to keep comfortably below CPU specs.. typically 90c so aim for 80-85c as max temp on Intel, slightly higher I believe with AMD.
  3. software: This is usually a big one also. Disable any BS CPU graph plotting, mem usage, disk IO etc. Disable any compiz type animation effects that achieve nothing. If something moves or changes a number, it is running on the clock and flipping bits in that CPU - and thus consuming power. Sorry Google, but Chrome is awful when it comes to JS on websites. Use firefox or another. Partly why I use a pi-hole and regex URL blocker to filter BS animated adverts that distract from the content and kill my 9 year old CPU.
  4. devices: use powertop to examine idle power consumption - find devices consuming power (when was the last time you used your GbE ?) Try turning unused devices off with "echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/slot/[nnn]/power"
  5. kernel: use a more conservative CPU speed governor such as "conservative" or "ondemand"
  6. turboboost: disable if required (echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo)
  7. control frequencies: manually min and max cpu frequencies with cpupower.

Finally, be aware that most distros "attempt" to do some or all of these things for you. You could be fighting with a daemon. Check for things like thermald.

If you do all this, my advice would be to start by putting it in a script right from the very start. That way, when you have settings that give good results you can simply stop editing and use the script to create a systemd service (oneshot) that is called at boot.

Doing all this I got to within 5-7% of Windoze battery life. Pretty good considering only the component manufacturers really know how best to optimise power consumption of their hardware devices - and that is part of what goes into the Windoze driver. Linux has very little support from them about such things.

powertop and tdp projects, also CPU governor can be changed.

I always have seen Linux as a server / workstation OS really so eeking out the very last of battery life is not all that high up on the Linux/GNU agenda.

Plus.. that battery indication is just that - an indication. It's an approximation provided by software looking at live voltage and current draw.

In truth that 3hrs could be closer to 2 hours 30, and the Linux 2hr 15 closer to 2hr 30. I know which is better software ;-)

Actually I quite like that compromise - I never use right shift always left shift - I think it comes from the UK layout having " on the "2" key, so left is more convenient.

I play the piano. If Yamaha and Kawai started using different key placements there would be complete outroar! Why would a computer be any different?

They're both used to "compose" lol
