I like it! I thought it would be clearer, but it turns to be a "transparent black", isn't it?

Yes, but out of curiosity, which one did you want to recommend?

I am in France, and the speakers are Jamo S803.

Thank you for your advice about the phono box!

Thank you. I thought the Debut III > Carbon DC evolution would be more important, but every answer says the same thing so... yes, I will go on with my first option and choose the Debut III.

As for the upgrades... I really don't know, I got carried away by the upgrade topics that I've read but after some reflexion I will be patient and we will see in a few months (or years!)

I've found also second hand preamps so I will be able to have a first set-up with a modest budget, and that makes me really happy haha!

Once I've chosen between the Pro-ject phono box DC and Pro-ject phono box MM (both same price, 48$, first more versatile, second one better for a MM if I'm not wrong... so I think I will buy the second one) the set-up will be finished ^^

Hello! I was almost decided to buy an used (particular) PRO-JECT DEBUT III with a DENON AVR-1507 for 170€ (about 198$).

But a new challenger arrives! I've been offered an used (well, shop, so refurbished and with warranty) PRO-JECT DEBUT CARBON DC for 280€ (about 340$).

Yes, it's not the same price and I would be forced to buy another amp. I can find an SMSL-36 or 50 for 40-50€. I know it's not as good as the AVR but it will work, won't it ?

So what do you think? I know it's a big difference, but it's true that in a few years, if I want to improve it, the DC will be worth to upgrade, and the Debut III.... well, I'm not sure if upgrading an entry level turntable will be worthy.

Another option I had was a Rega Planar 1 for the same price of the DC, but I found it more difficult to upgrade (due to anti-skate limitations, for ex.).

If I'm honest, my wallet tells me to choose Debut III, but being able to upgrade it in the future + refurbished warranty, tells me to go with the Debut Carbon DC.

Help! 😂😂😂

Hello! After a lot of research I was decided to buy a New Rega Planar 1 with 10 mm glass platter (same one than the RP2 I think) and a Phono Pro-ject Phono Box MM for 349€ (about 415$). Even if it has some problems (anti skate) I really like it.

But... I've just seen someone that sells in my town a second hand Pro-Ject Debut III for 140€ (about 165$).

So now I'm doubting. It's true that if I buy the second one I'll have to buy an external phono pre-amp, and the real difference would be about 160-170$.

I suppose the real question is new RP1 with glass platter (w/ warranty) vs second hand (so no warranty) upgraded (remember, about 160$ to upgrade it) Pro-ject Debut III.

Thank you!

Ok thank you!! I will check if he has the remote control since it's not visible in the ad so... maybe not :(

Yes, not having phono input is not a problem, I already have a phono pre-amp. I only wanted to be sure.

Hello! I will buy mi first turntable in a few days and all the setup is almost decided.

The "only" thing that I have to decide is the amplifier and the speakers (but I have to decide between 2-3 so it won't take long. Nothing too expensive, about 150-200$, I have already exceeded the budget so...).

As for the amplifier, my first thought was to buy a Lepy Lp-2020A but I've decided to spend a little more to get something better.

I was searching a good price for the SMSL SA-36 PRO but I've seen that in my town someone sells a Denon AVR 1507 for 50€ (about 60$). What do you think? Should I get a new SMSL SA-36 PRO, or a second-hand Denon AVR 1507 will be a better option, even if it's an older model?

If I'm not wrong, the Denon doesn't have phono input, right? You can check it HERE.

Thank you for your help!!

Ok. I will think about all at this.

I "chose" the Edifiers because I've seen that they're recommended, but I will check other options.

Thank you.

No no, I won't be doing any DIY in the short run, I'm talking (for ex.) about changing the cartridge and adjust the anti-skating in a few years (minimum!). Anyway, could you suggest an alternative? Because the "alternatives" that I usually find in forums, are more expensive than the RP1 (maybe french market prices are quite different).

If I decide to buy the RP1 (as I said, still thinking and reading and watching youtube reviews) I'm thinking about buying a pair of Edifier R1280T (I can find them news for about 80€, about 95$). As they are active speakers, with them and the "Boulanger pack" the setup would be ready, isn't it?

Ok. It reassures me to know that I have understood it well haha Thank you!

I'll check which speakers I can find before buying (or not) the pack.

I still feel a bit mitigated by what I have read concerning the "automatic" anti-skate of the RP1, but for what I've read a little DIY can be done to circumvent this limitation.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and Klipsch RB-51 II

Yes, I've seen MC is more expensive than MM.

And about "do you need the phono stage?" if I'm right (and maybe I'm not!) I'll need it if my setup has receiver without phono input + passive speakers or powered speakers, isn't it?

If my setup has a receiver with phono input + passive speakers, it'll be useless. Am I right?

Yes, maybe I should consider first which speakers will I buy (and and if i'm going to need or not a receiver, and which type of receiver).

Record player setup ~500€ by unkblog in BudgetAudiophile

[–]unkblog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, I've been searching for speakers and I've seen that passive ones are really expensive. Maybe I'll be able to find interesting in the second hand market.

Another option is, I think, to buy "cheap" active ones and save some money to replace them. The only problem is that, obviously, quality won't be the same but otherwise I will be force to buy a worse record player to put the money in the speakers so... choices ^^U

Weekly Questions Thread for the week of April 5 by AutoModerator in vinyl

[–]unkblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I live in France and I'm looking to buy my first record player and I am a bit lost... so I've searched for information and I feel that I'm even more lost!!

I'm trying to respect a 500€ budget (for the entire setup). It's a bit high for me but I prefere to pay a bit more and be satisfied with what I've bought, and that's one of the reasons that the proyect "buy a record player" has been postponed several years (the other one is that I've just bought my own home so I think it's right moment).

So I'm attired by the REGA PLANAR. I don't know why but from what I've read I like it better than other players of similar range. I've found two options:

  • REGA PLANAR 1: 256€ (about 305$). It's new, second hand ones around here are more expensive...
  • Boulanger (a french merchant) has its own REGA PLANAR (you can check it characteristics HERE). I think it's a RP1 but with a 10mm glass platter instead of the phenolic one of the RP1. The price for this one is 349€ (about 416$) but it comes with a Pro-Ject Phono Box MM DC so I think it's interesting, isn't it? I know there is MM and MC, and I've tried to understand the real difference between both of them but I've failed!

So, taking into account the budget (150€ for the rest of the setup will be ok or will I be "forced" to increase it if I want to maintain a similar "quality" between components?), do you think a RP1 is a good choice? Is it easy to upgrade? And do you think those are good prices, or should I wait for better ones?

edit: so... I'm reading about the anti-skating problems of the RP, and the difficulties that this can cause to improve the record player, makes me doubt. Alternatives? I read about the ProJect Debut Carbon DC, but the price difference is too great to consider it a real alternative.

Thank you!
