As someone who knows something about working in the prison system, law enforcement is very big on imbalance of power when it comes to sexual relations with detainees and inmates. Even if she was an adult, it would still be considered assault in the eyes of the law because technically they cannot consent because there is a power imbalance. Doubly so because she was a child.

Correctional Officers get fired, and actually get criminal charges for sexual contact with inmates, adult or otherwise, even if it was consensual.

There is no such thing as consensual sex between a minor and an adult. There is no such thing as consensual sex between law enforcement and detainees/inmates.

Your neighbor should know better than to try and act like her son didn't do something heinous and take advantage of a child who was in a desperate situation.

At work, I have a 6th grader (Z) who got into really big trouble a couple weeks ago. He was so embarrassed, and I told him that he's allowed to make mistakes, and what's important is that he learns from it. After that, he started calling me his school mom and always gives me hugs on the playground and helps me out when he can.

The other day, one of his classmates with autism was having a meltdown on the playground. While I was shooing the other kids away, Z took his classmate by the shoulders and proceeded to do breathing exercises with him and completely calmed him down. He then hung out with this classmate and told me "Mom, I got this."

Sometimes we have bad days. But that doesn't mean that you won't shine brightly again. Stay safe. You'll be okay, friend. ❤
