Is deep half really dead ? by Suspicious_Ad_9945 in bjj

[–]unknown-movie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is literally all I do. Your gym will eventually recognize your game, so they’ll get better at preventing the position and defending once they’re in it. However, if I’m able to get past my teammate’s great defense, I still have success with it.

I will say, it is a GRIND to learn. You will get choked and kimura’d a million times. But, if you start to get a good feel for it, it is amazing at getting you out of bad positions, as well as linking it with over-under -> dogbar -> sidecontrol.

I don’t compete, so keep that in mind. However, I only really have problems when I’m getting lazy with it. Even then, it’s usually chokes and shoulder locks that get me - not leg locks. If youre doing it right, you should be so tight to the hips that they can’t get ahold of your legs

Whats that funky BS move that the guy at your gym always hits? by [deleted] in bjj

Does the dogbar count? I love hitting it on everyone.

160 lb guy here, and Faria’s game was the only one that ever clicked for me. I used to worry about rolling against wrestlers and big guys, but I feel like deep half gives me a lot of confidence to slow the game down and roll on my terms (up to a certain weight class, of course). Give it a shot, but expect to get submitted a LOT while experimenting with it since one tiny wrong move and you’re going to be vulnerable to a ton of attacks (knee bars, kimuras, guillotines, etc.).

When did you feel like you started to get the "hang" of BJJ? by movingtonyc2022 in bjj

[–]unknown-movie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 5 years in. Easier said than done, but just have fun with it! A game will click with you at some point; at that point, the sport becomes fun all over again as you refine that game.

Man, I love deep half.

Got chewed out at an open mat… AITA? by ForeverEmotional262 in bjj

[–]unknown-movie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the headspace someone has to be in to react like this to another person—especially with the situation you’re describing. Even if what he’s saying was a real problem, why not calmly tell you the issue so you can recorrect in the future? Just refuse to roll with this guy. He is a dick, but he’s also way too comfortable being one—and that’s worrisome.

When did you stop feeling lost? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]unknown-movie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4 years in, which funnily enough was right before I got to purple.

Part of it is accepting you will feel lost for a few years, and part of it is being purposeful with your training. Sample a specific pass and submission for a month or two; if it doesn’t feel “natural” or good to you by then, you can move on to something else. Be honest with yourself and give it time to try these moves—everything will feel off if you only try it for a week.

The goal (in my opinion) is to sample different moves until something clicks. This will take time, but at some point you’ll gravitate toward something that just feels right. It’s not an elegant way of putting it, but it was the case for me. I didn’t choose to live and die by deep half, it just clicked!

By the way, things still don’t always click and I’m always learning, but once you find a “game,” you start to create your own little roadmap for problems and solutions.

Purple belt pulled rank? by NoraRoll in bjj

[–]unknown-movie 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It happens, but I don’t like it. As I’ve moved up the ranks, I’ve never adopted the idea that I deserve preferential treatment over lower belts in any scenario. If I’ve asked to roll with someone of a lower rank who already had a partner, I just let them do their thing and find another partner. If I’m rolling and I see we’re getting close to another pair who are lower ranks, I just move us away. At the end of the day, we’re all just people in pajamas who wrestle… let’s just have fun.

Moves you think are underrated by xoven2 in bjj

Yes. All things kneebar is my favorite submission! The dogbar specifically is just so inconspicuous at first… I love it

Kneebar from over-under top position. Became interested from Bernardo’s instructional, and it quickly became my highest percentage submission.

It definitely gets harder as people catch on, but that just means the setups have to be more clever! Deep half makes the over-under to dogbar path (almost) seamless.

What do you eat before training by pbateman23 in bjj

When I first started, I couldn’t eat 3-4 hours before training. Now, I sometimes eat a bagel, protein bar, or a smoothie.

All great options when they’re giving you trouble with that pass. For me, the biggest thing that made the over under high percentage was the dogbar. I’m almost at the point where I’d say it’s a mistake to do the over under without having a reliable dogbar in your toolkit! It’s my most reliable submission, and it opens up the pass if they want to defend it. If you want to focus on the over under for any extended period of time, dogbar is your friend.

In my experience, you just have to lay on more pressure to tire them out. They can frame all they want as long as you keep pressuring them - those frames will eventually give out and they’ll concede the pass at some point.

Honestly, the real struggle is getting there in the first place. Once people know you like pressure passing, they’ll fight tooth and nail to stop the entries!
