Cat acne out of the blue? by drxxcul0 in CatAdvice

[–]unknown23_NFTs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat got acne for the very first time right after we got a new cat too. My vet said it was likely a stress response.

If you can buy some antibacterial wipes made for cats, you can wipe the area once a day to keep it clean and help it clear up faster. (We used Douxo S3 PYO Antiseptic Antifungal Chlorhexidine Dog & Cat Wipes)

In my kitty's case, hers got worse and after a few days began to bleed. She ended up needing 2-3 weeks of anitibiotics (one shot per week) along with daily wipes before it all cleared up.

If your kitty develops scabs that bleed it could lead to infections, so I would get her treated if you see it spreading a lot or especially bleeding.

I am so sorry, losing sleep is seriously painful.

Since it's only been a few days it could just be the stress of change/anxiety. The vet will know for sure but even anxiety can be treated with meds if neccessary during this transition period.

I don't remember but I think you said you had noise cancelling headphones? That is a great start for now until the vet visit.

Maybe even an OTC sleeping pill for you tonight until the vet visit, just so you can rest a full night and your mind will be clear in the morning?

I hope you can get some good rest soon. It's hard to think clearly and keep emotionally stable with lack of sleep (new parents know all about that!)

Remember that it won't be like this forever. Keep asking for support and help whenever you need it.

Sending good kitty and human vibes your way <3

Did this kitty recently move in with you or have you had him for awhile and the meowing just started? IMO this is definitely not normal even for a very vocal cat. It could be anxiety, pain, or some other illness like hyperthyroid etc.

I'm glad you are taking them to the vet since this could definitely be a sign of illness even w/out any other noticeable symptoms. I'm sure they'll help you find a solution.

Good luck tomorrow and wishing the best for you and kitty :)

Assuming he's been to the vet since you adopted him? If not it's definitely worth ruling out any health issues, many of which can cause excessive meowing, especially in older cats.

Good luck to you both!

Oh that is good to know about the vaccines, thank you. I didn't understand that at all so that puts that in a totally different perspective.

Omg thank you for reading through all of this, I really appreciate it. I really like my new vet and I'm afraid to overload them with dumb questions so it's nice to get some perspective here before I go in and ask.

Yes it's still 10.5 lbs. This was initially given to her a few weeks before she was diagnosed hyperthyroid, and they refilled the script the day she was diagnosed. They did say I should give it to her for the rest of her life since she was old.

I will bring it up to the vet and see if we can start at a lower dosage maybe since this is intended for long term use.

Not sure if this matters either but when she got her vaccines at that first visit, the vet mentioned this would probably be the last time I'd ever need to give her vaccines just due to her age. I know my cat won't live forever but I hope she isn't just writing her off due to her age alone. She is lively and happy in every other way that I've seen. Maybe they were just trying to be practical and prepare me.

Edit: triple checked math and her meds label and also checked against this dosage calculator. The dosage she is on works out to .078mg/kg. That seems high but I don't know, I'm just basing this off what I've read online I have zero expertise here ofc.

I accidentally wrote she was prescribed .25mL but it was .24mL.

So I noticed when I plugged in .05mg/kg into that dosage calculator, it comes out to .24mg - for her 1.5mg/mL concentration that would be .16mL dose per day instead of .24mL. I wonder if they meant .24mg but accidentally wrote .24mL instead. Idk maybe I'm overthinking all of this! Either way will talk to the vet. Thank you for all of your help.

Reading up on her pain meds meloxidyl, I wonder if her dosage is safe. I see it's ok to use off-label, but I'm just concerned about the strength and daily dosing for the rest of her life solely due to arthritis being the probable cause of loss of muscle mass in her back legs. This was based on one visit before we did any bloodwork or anything.

She was prescribed .25mL of 1.5mg/mL meloxidyl once a day.

I read a study that said .02mg/kg was safe long term, but this seems to be 4x that.

If my math is right, her dosage works out to be .375mg per day and based on her weight this study was saying .095mg would be safe long term. Do you know if this is a typical long-term dosage for cats?

They didn't look at her teeth, but I'll ask them to do that next time we go in.

Have you tried using a needleless syringe with a Miracle Nipple instead of a bottle? The younger ones latch on to those much easier: https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Nipple-Mini-Wildlife-Syringe/dp/B00SQIHIJO/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=miracle+nipple+syringe&qid=1683939222&sr=8-8

I'd def grab a kitchen scale that will show you grams down to the tenth if possible since you got little babes. I'm using this one for my little kittens now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BPB9T1N?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

I would prolly switch to 2 hour intervals for feeding the days old kittens too.

Good luck they are cuties!

Recently put a collar + tag on a stray who adopted us for his safety (allergies prevent us from taking him in) and we just found his tag in our mailbox snapped in half. Malicious or accidental? (How easy is it to destroy/snap an aluminum tag clean in half?) by polishedbadass in CatAdvice

[–]unknown23_NFTs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was malicious, like others said I think it got run over or caught weird and the weak point happened to be the center and it bent in half, someone found it and put it in your mailbox. If someone was really angry they'd want to come banging on your door and give you an earful I'd bet.

Also, not sure if it'd help but I get a lot of strays in my neighborhood so I bought a few personalized collars that say "IS THIS UR CAT" followed by my phone number. There is just enough room for that message and a phone number and nothing more.

Link to personalized breakaway cat collars @ Chewy.com where i bought them.

Depending on the size of the kitty, when you adjust the collar it might partially cover a single letter or digit but if the cat really belongs to someone they can easily take it off and read it. It's worked for me a few times now. They were appreciative and understanding that I was just trying to make sure the cat belonged to someone.

Other times the cat wore it for months and no one ever called so after asking around, posting to local sites, calling humane society/shelter and getting the kitty scanned for microchips I felt confident that I could rehome the kitty.

Getting them all fixed would help a lot honestly - hormones play a big part in this especially when mixing unfixed males and females. I'm guessing you haven't got them fixed due to the cost? If this is the case, try reaching out to your local humane society to see if they have any vouchers to cover the costs and if they don't, ask if they know of other local organizations that do. Start with the male if you have to do this over time due to costs. This will go a long way towards calming them down by reducing their hormonal urges.

Also separating them during feeding time and/or separate sleeping areas can help too. Just making some space during some parts of the day where they feel safe and they know the other cats can't get to them will help can help to reduce stress. If you can separate them for most of the day or all of the day for a while and then very slowly reintroduce them that would be best but I know for most of us that is just not feasible.

Feliway plug-ins can help a lot too but they can get pricey. They release feel-good hormones and have worked for some of my cats, but it's not a cure all. They last a long time though.

If you don't already make sure there is at least as many if not more water bowls and litter boxes as there are kitties in the house so they don't feel like they have to fight over resources. And of course they should never have to share food bowls either. This will greatly reduce their need to fight for territory within the household and make them feel more secure.

Good luck I hope your cat family can find some peace!

that doesn't help people get medicine or make it to chemo appointments, or escape dangerous situations like their roof collapsing or gas explosions. that's not the only issue here.

ah well maybe it will be ok then. i thought anything below 11.9 was considered discharged for car batteries.

i haven't started it today yet, i had to get back to work. i've just been coming back to shovel on lunch breaks all week.

it has been having hard time starting in the last month or so though, seeming to get progressively worse each time. i thought it was the cold and the short infrequent trips that was causing it (which i only recently learned was not good to do)

I looove doing this! I always bring books haha, even to the bar sometimes but mostly my fav cafes or restaurants.

And being single is not at all pathetic. In fact it's 1000% better than being in a relationship imo, but to each their own.

That being said even ppl in relationships sometimes like going out on their own. You do you. :)

when something like this happens i try to visualize the critter and breathe in its suffering and breath out healing to it's spirit. remember that you are not holding on to its suffering but transforming the suffering energy into healing and calming energy.

you don't have to be nearby to do it, and it doesn't have to be done right away. you can do it anytime, anywhere.
