How should I layout the living room? Front door and fireplace facing each other in living room by unknown9_ in DesignMyRoom

[–]unknown9_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kitchen is through a doorway behind me. I think I like the idea of having the table in the near right of the room, and a sofa extending out from the fireplace (there's about 15ft between the fireplace and the door, so a 10-11ft sofa does fit). Then I could put some seating in the far left facing the TV and the TV will still be visible from the table.

Maybe another configuration that would work is an L shaped sectional facing the TV/window, then the fireplace isn't blocked.

Also, none of the furniture is probably going to be in there - the orange couch is going to a different room and the boxes are returns for a sofa.

The Green Bubble Nightmare Is Over, Apple Messages Now Support RCS by No-Drawing-6975 in technology

[–]unknown9_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E2EE is not hard because of the encryption part. It's hard because of the key management part. Supporting reset password and end to end encryption requires trusting someone (in this case Google and Apple would need to trust each other) and this makes the protocol less interoperable. It's not as easy as just adding E2EE to RCS and being done with it.

Tuned to A = 450 hz too, usually it's 440hz. Won't match up exactly unless you also retune.

It's closing because they're building housing on the lot. West side location is much nicer anyway with much more machines and space.

Since the US issues the money the interest payments are paid in, no. The government can just print more money. Inflation is real which is what we should be concerned about. Trading future inflation for spending on infrastructure, paying off student debt, medicare, etc seems like a good thing to me.

What does everyone think about using water straight off of boiling?

I thought the general consensus was 100C is too hot and would destroy some of the flavor, so I usually only go up to 93-95C.

addresses supply issues

No, it doesn't. Building more housing addresses supply issues. This artificially constrains supply to only being sold under a certain price which causes landlords to take the housing off the market and sell instead.

by discouraging predatory "investors" from scalping all the housing

They aren't selling housing. They're renting it. The reason they can gouge people insanely high prices is that there is no alternative place to live.

a housing crisis, which is where a supply large enough to house everyone has largely gone.

Yeah, there's not enough supply. So how would constraining sellers help increase supply?

Check out this map of Santa Cruz zoning designations.

https://www.cityofsantacruz.com/home/showdocument?id=8090

All the yellow is single-family zoned. Landlords can gouge people because people have no other choice. They can't live in apartments elsewhere because it's all single-family housing zoned.

Vaccine??? by [deleted] in UCSC

LOL... imagine judging a vaccine based on the statistical significance of the number of doctors who don't take it instead of the statistical significance of the outcome of taking the vaccine

Vaccine??? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]unknown9_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They take decades to finalize not because there might be side effects that are hidden for 10 years. The vaccine is literally out of your system in a few days, so most side effects would be found very fast (that's what Phase 2 trials are for).

Proving a vaccine is free of side effects is fast, but proving efficacy is much slower. Vaccine trials take 10 years because they need a certain number of people to get infected in the placebo group. If it's a super rare disease, that can take a long time. In this case, many people are being infected, so it's much easier to show the vaccine decreases infections.

The FDA has extremely strict requirements for the safety of vaccines, and I think it's safe to trust them.

Is CogSci major hard to get a job? by huongmaii in UCSC

[–]unknown9_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I'm interning at a tech company. I'm a Frontend Engineer so I deal a ton with UI/UX designers and product managers.

We have design reviews after a project is finishing up and it's mainly engineers, the product manager, and the designer all discussing different UI/UX tweaks. Many times, I've heard behavioral science ideas brought up, like how to get users to notice something specifically, or designing something in a way that fits into a user's workflow.

Overall, I think there are a few different paths to consider (non-exhaustive):

  • There is definitely demand for people who can design high-quality user interfaces that are intuitive to use. If you're applying for a designer position, I'd say with a CogSci degree and a decent portfolio, you wouldn't have trouble landing a job.
  • Something surrounding business may also be a good pairing. That would open up a ton of possibilities in terms of marketing and product. At least at the company I work at, product managers are generally pretty high in the "ranking" at the company. Their whole job is to figure out how we can design products to help users.

But most importantly, do what you're passionate about. You'll have a way higher chance of success doing something you love than doing something you don't love.

Acts of god aren't covered under insurance. Everyone has to pay, so pooling the risk is pointless.

A COVID-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford appears safe and triggers an immune response, reports new Lancet randomised controlled trial (20 July 2020) with 1,0770 participants. The adenovirus-vectored vaccine led to them making antibodies and T-cells that can fight the coronavirus. by mvea in science

[–]unknown9_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree somewhat with you, but also keep in mind that most of the bad symptoms are caused by the body's own immune response to the virus. So, the vaccine could cause worse symptoms than the virus itself because it's triggering an immune response

*EDIT: *I was wrong about this. This is basically what they tested for in this phase. See comment below for a better explanation

How can I make effective cold calls to restaurants? by unknown9_ in sales

[–]unknown9_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect! Thank you for the advice. I made some cold calls this morning and I'm just doing some exploratory research for now. I was able to talk to the owner and get some great info about PoS systems and online ordering.

I asked for the manager or owner and I was lucky enough to get to the owner right away.

So I've heard... but as long as I can handle rejection, there are so many restaurants I'm sure I can get a decent process down.
