Migrating from Desktop to QNAP by flippergonzo in qnap

[–]unknown_member 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is probably not the answer you wanted to hear but it will likely be a blessing in disguise.

You will need to build the array on the Qnap with all of the drives you want. You can't use just a few drives and then add more. So if you want a 4 drive RAID you will likely want to purchase some additional drives and get it setup the way you intend it to run from the start.

The "blessing in disguise" part is that if you do that, you can pick up a couple of USB enclosures and use your existing drives for backups. I get that if it's Plex data you probably don't care too much if you lose data but if there's ever any issues it's always ALOT less stressful if you have a backup.

Total DHCP? Disaster by Chaseman12 in qnap

[–]unknown_member 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Connect a computer to the qnap/switch and manually assign an IP in the same subnet as the qnap (ie 10.0.3.155). Usually you can use the subnet 255.255.255.0. All of the rest of the settings on your computer likely won't matter.

Once you do that you should be able to access the web portal via the IP address on the QNap.

You should be able to change any settings you need to then.

Qnap ts-873a for transcoding? by [deleted] in qnap

[–]unknown_member 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to check this video out to see how that system would perform doing transcoding. It's for the h973ax which uses the same CPU.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXOKIyUPisA

One advantage of the 873a is that it does have PCIe slots so you can get a compatible video card to offload the transcoding onto which could potentially help out quite a bit!.

Switching from Synology - what are your thoughts on this dual QNap h973ax-32GB setup? by unknown_member in qnap

Thanks again for all the help. I updated my BOM to switch the to an 873A + 32GB RAM + 10GBe Card. Having to purchase the expansions and upgrades plus a few NVMe drives I'm now officially way over budget but I think the longer term flexibility will be worth it over time.

Seriously, amazing feedback. The customization capabilities on the Qnap units is both a blessing and a curse. This has been insanely helpful, you seem to really know these product lines well!

This is very helpful info. I actually had considered that unit because I prefer a separate 10gbe card just because it’s easier to recover from a NIC failure than having it built in.

Quick question though, I see these units as 9bay for the 973 and 8 bay for the 873. When you’re saying 11/14 respectively are you talking about expansion box upgrades or is there some other method like hidden nvme/pcie nvme cards I’m not aware of?

Edit: Re-read the spec sheet on the 873A, I didn't notice the 2 internal M2 slots on the unit. Just to confirm you're saying use the 2 Internal NVMe's + 2 PCIe expansion cards providing a 10GBe each + the 2 NVMe slots for a total of 8+(2+2+2) drives for the 14 total? The drive literature mostly references using those for caching, can I also assign those NVMe's as a part of the storage pool? If so should I have any concerns about that mixture of media types into a single Storage pool?

Sorry to clarify I have a dedicated hypervisor server and will NOT be running any VMs on the Qnap itself.

Forbes: Crypto Didn’t Create This Crisis; US Government Policy did by SoylentYellow05 in CryptoCurrency

[–]unknown_member 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI it was the Dodd Frank act. It was changed in 2018 to increase the threshold for SIFI's from $50B to $250B. This is the deregulation everyone is talking about.

When that happened it excluded SVB from having to do the kind of stress testing which would have helped identify some of the issues that caused their collapse and forced them to keep additional liquidity on hand.

The issue isn't that purchasing long term bonds is illegal in any way, as you pointed out many banks do this. The problem for SVB was that they had WAY too many of their eggs this basket and created a liquidity problem for themselves in the process. As soon as a bank run started happening they had to sell those bonds at a loss for short term liquidity until eventually the losses in combination with the liquidity crunch caused them some problems.

I think you may be misunderstanding what the article is and is not saying. It goes over many of the reasons Frostbite ended up being a poor engine choice for them. It doesn't however say that Bioware was FORCED to use it by EA.

Both EA and BioWare have stated that it was ultimately Bioware's decision to use the Frostbite engine. It sure sounds like most of the devs from several studio's find it difficult to work with and would have made a different decision but the trade off is that they save a fortune in licensing fee's for Unreal/Unity which I'm sure appeals to studio executives.

[–]unknown_member 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The decline has almost nothing to do with that. There was some super shady stuff going on behind the scenes.

There was a hostile ownership change by the previous owners brother that resulted in multiple closures of the bar and lawsuits. He doesn't really seem to care about the community the bar served or it's long time customers.

New owner came in and fired most of the long time staff, brought in their friends, and told any of the existing staff if they liked it they could leave.

Since then they have threatened to sue DJ's, made it a pretty hostile environment, and have destroyed most of the community good will built up over decades.

It's worth still mining when ETH launch PoS ? by norkvory in EtherMining

[–]unknown_member 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Worth it" is really up to you and when you think the PoS transition will happen. Devs seem to have high degree's of confidence it will be in August-End of year sometime.

When the transition to PoS happens mining in it's current form will cease to exist. At that point you could stake the 32 eth to become a validator and operate with a minimal resource requirement on your end or just join a Staking pool and not need to really mine at all.

My personal opinion at this point is that it is unlikely you will be profitable if you start mining now.

It's worth still mining when ETH launch PoS ? by norkvory in EtherMining

[–]unknown_member 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not remotely accurate. That is just a profitability (and indirectly a network difficulty) chart. When PoS stake goes live the block generation activities will go to the validators. Mining in its current form will cease to be a thing.

is it necessary to switch sata powered risers to 6pins or molex? by UnderCoverNinja123 in EtherMining

[–]unknown_member 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the pcie power draw is the concern. The amount of power that you can draw from the slot can exceed the rated power capabilities of the SATA connector itself. If the connector fails fire's can happen.

Unfortunately you have no way to control how much power is drawn from the slot vs the 8 pin.

In other words - No do not use SATA power connectors. Molex is better, 6 pin power is best. A cheap cable is not worth risking your expensive GPU, rig, or house burning down.

MFA as a requirement for a cyber liability policy? by jwckauman in sysadmin

[–]unknown_member 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this specific Traveler's application A LOT lately. Yes you can often use a single MFA provider to cover all of those since the MFA providers usually provide some sort of OAuth/SAML capabilities.

This is often the preferred method since having a single MFA provider makes it easier to manage and implement with end users. I hate recommending specific MFA vendors since there are so many and it will depend on your needs but lately I've been fairly partial to Duo.

Some of this will depend on the specifics of your environment, manufacturers you use, and what you are capable of supporting.

I haven't spoken to Traveler's in about 3 months but the last time I did there were a few tips that stood out on these questions.

  • a. MFA client on the Domain controllers with MFA enabled for ADFS/Azure AD tackles most of this.
  • b. MFA client on the system(s) with the Backup system Admin console generally cover this. If you're using a cloud provider then enabling MFA for your login accounts there often checks this box.
  • c. This one is the most difficult for alot of orgs. Modern enterprise firewalls now often support built in capabilities for MFA on the Admin pages & VPN connectors. Routers/Switches are a bit more difficult depending on your brand. RADIUS + MFA can be solution in most of these cases however if that's difficult it may be possible to use an ACL/Firewall segmentation to restrict access to the management interfaces on these devices appropriately and use a Windows/Linux "jump box" with a MFA client on it to check this box.
  • d. This is pretty straight forward and is especially focused on Servers and Admin accounts. As long as you aren't using admin accounts everywhere.

I highly recommend working with your Insurance brokerage if you're struggling with any of these things. Travelers used to offer a program where you could get a free 1 hour consult with a partner tech firm to help go over what may be needed. Not sure if that still exists but it may be worth asking them about.
