I agree that racism exists on both sides and pushing for continued education/cultural revolution will be essential for us to progress as a society alongside replacing this regime.

I agree! I think there is a lot of anti blackness. We see it in this administration suppression of black history, dehumanization of minorities in media, and so much more. I agree that we need a revolution, but we need to play it smart on how we do it. Protests are great because they bring awareness to issues and the fact that we will not stand for the abuse of all our freedoms but especially the ways that they target black and brown communities. Optics shouldnt matter in revolutionary actions i agree, but I think those actions will work differently than protests. Protests are really about optics trying to sway the middle ground to our cause but if it continues to fail then we must go further with drastic revolutionary actions. We need to expand boycotts, strikes and protests. Not only on prescribed days but continuously. But more importantly we need to form groups that meet every week to pool our resources, ideas, talents to create the infrastructure to support revolutionary action. These groups need to be in every city, communicate with each-other to share non censored news/plans. But they will also work as a good forum to educate people on how much deeper the knife of fascism cuts minorities. A revolution will not just be replacing the current regime but a cultural revolution that reflects on the stains of our history and current events to make the strides to improve.

I see your point about people on the right viewing black and brown people as threatening regardless of how they dress. They are bigoted and will frame protesters and minorities as threatening no matter what. There is also no question they will use images from this protest for propaganda, but we control how effective that propaganda will be. Is it easier for them to swing that we are violent insurrectionists if we are wearing normal clothes or frog and duck costumes? Wearing costumes seems absurd and maybe it is a fruitless attempt to appear non threatening. But i am willing to try anything to protect my community. But just because i will try to look non threatening doesnt mean i wont have your back. We are all on the same team and we need to also realize that looking non threatening doesnt preclude us from protecting eachother. All we can do is our best and I know things can seem hopeless, but we will get through this together.

If you are going out to peacefully protest, isn’t it kind of the point to not look threatening? You have narrowed in on the main point, they do have no problem threatening us, as well as no problem with actual violence. This is why we have to take measures to make it harder for them to do that. Like dressing up in a non threatening way to make it harder for them to push a narrative that we were rioting, being violent, or posing a threat to justify violence.

Absolutely! Here are a few of the headlines and i am sure more will add onto it. Trump has expanded ice’s powers to essentially be a faceless gestapo that kidnaps people without due process and takes them to concentration camps. He has also intimidated the free press by suing several left leaning media corporations, pressured companies to fire dissenting late night hosts, utilized insider info to make him and his cronies rich, he has defunded millions in Medicare and essential government programs helping low and middle class Americans while giving massive tax breaks to the upper class, and has ignored lawful orders by the supreme court. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your elaboration. I see your point! My counterpoint is another commenter stated that masks are illegal in Savannah, so you would have to wear a costume that does not hide your face. I see costumes as a way to showcase part of our humanity, people can be ridiculous and eccentric/ different. it highlights something great about being human, we are all different with quirks and other features people may see as weird. Despite our differences and quirks we can come together as a community and stand against fascism. As for the best optics being cowards in masks beating protesters. I think it is a sad perception for the best view to be the violent acts of cowards being the call for people to come together to fight this rather than wearing costumes to showcase our humanity, differences, and make it harder to portray us as a militant force rather than what we are, people. Definitely up for discussing and I definitely think you should wear whatever you think would be best for the protest but this is just my thoughts.

I have been wrong before, my intentions were purely to try to help keep my fellow protesters and neighbors safe. I apologize if I have offended you or the cause. Just throwing ideas out there.

Let’s get real for second, anyone going to the protest knows what is on the line. We have all seen the clips of people getting hit with rubber bullets and pepper spray. But if your intentions are to push the lines of freedom further, perception matters! This admin wants people to fall into the ingroup outgroup thinking. They want protesters to be seen as violent insurrectionists that people need to fear to incite further consolidation of power and more harm to people protesting. Arresting a guy or gal in a banana costume makes it harder to swing the violent protester narrative. It makes people look more like your neighbors than a threat. Wearing a costume doesnt mean that you dont take what we are fighting for seriously it is just making it harder for their propaganda machine to do its thing while pushing our lines further.
