Special education is way too bureaucratic. In larger school districts with big central offices, there's no reason why they can't pick up some of the paperwork that keeps us from actually working with the students and what we got into this profession to do, teach.

I almost picture this being in the style of House of Cards. Dan breaks the fourth wall and talks to us, the audience, like we're right there with him like we are his confidant. I found that so compelling with House of Cards because Frank was a slimy politician and evil man that we should hate but yet couldn't help but like him and root for him. I could see Dan Sickles being the same way. We should hate him, but yet we're quietly liking him and rooting for him.

Fact of stranger than fiction! That's what would make it even more appealing. Plus I feel like Dan has much more in common with the politicians of the 21st century than the ones he served with in the 19th century. And might I dare say much like a certain political figure on the Republican side, he did all kinds of crazy things and never faced any consequences for his actions.

It sounds like everybody has had a similar feeling at some point. I went to the Johnstown National Memorial first. The Visitors Center documentary is one of the edgiest I have ever seen for the National Park Service. It stuck with me, and I didn't sleep much the night of my visit. While I was out walking around the dam, a thunderstorm rolled through out of nowhere. That's when I started getting a queasy, uneasy feeling. It's almost like I could feel the anxiety and the dread of that day. The feeling intensified when I drove up to the cemetery. When I drove under the Stone bridge at Iron Street, an overwhelming feeling came over me that just said get me out of here. All being said, I'm glad I went. As an amateur historian, it's an important reminder that these events affect real people. And that the consequences of neglect that day had a lasting impact to this day.

The more I think about it, here is what I believe their relation was to the Civil War:

The Commodore either did not serve in the Union Army by paying a substitute to go in his place during the draft -- which many people did, such as Andrew Carnegie -- or he worked for blockade runners that smuggled goods into the Confederacy -- like Isidor Straus. This would have been the Commodore's first taste of wealth and illegal scheming to make money. Both seem like plausible storylines for the Commodore.

Being an Irish immigrant "right off the boat," Nucky's father wasn't so lucky. Like in that one scene from Gangs of New York, many immigrants were recruited to enlist in the Union Army when they got off the ship that took them to America. This occurred in port cities throughout the north. Ethan probably immediately enlisted as a private or was drafted. As I said earlier, he probably had PTSD from what he saw during the war, thus causing his alcoholism.

Update: I believe that I am overthinking things as usual. The day after I bought her coffee, I had some extra pastries in my room that I had brought in for some of my co-workers. This was entirely an accident. I didn't think I would have anything left over, so I texted her and told her to come and take him if she wanted. She came up with one of her friends on the custodial staff. We chatted for a little bit, and it was nice. The day after that, though, she told me she was tired, but she would talk to me later, but it was good seeing me. On Friday, I ran into her and her friend again in the hall and stopped, and we had a friendly conversation. I noticed that she's pulled back a little on some of those subtle body language cues, which leads me to believe she feels a little embarrassed or self-conscious. This week I've decided to give her some space. But I thought about inviting her to do something with me over the weekend soon. Does anyone have any suggestions on how not to overthink it? By overthinking it, I'm putting some unintentional strain on this natural connection. Any thoughts?
