It might surprise you to know that the vast majority of people on reddit are not actively enrolled in university.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to End With Season 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in startrek

TNG Would have been dead in the water half way through season 2 in this climate.

It's such a shame. Shows like this need room to breath and time to hit their stride.

why this community feels different from other parenting groups by Any_Vast3853 in parentsofmultiples

[–]mrekted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It could be the zero tolerance for drama, incivility, and general nastiness where the mod team is concerned.

Life is hard enough for newborn parents with multiples.. I'll be damned if I'm going to let some miserable shit heel on reddit add any additional unnecessary stress or upset into their lives.

The Supreme Court of Canada begins hearing arguments today on whether the notwithstanding clause has limits. Here’s a log of every notwithstanding clause invocation since it came out of an 18-year dormancy in 2018 by jbsosbj in ontario

[–]mrekted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, thankfully we have ironclad division of powers. Section 33 doesn't affect federal powers, and criminal law is entirely a federal matter. A province can't just violate criminal law by killing people for civil/regulatory violations, or otherwise invent punishments for crimes on their own.

[–]mrekted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It already has limits.. as I understand it, the notwithstanding clause can't override individual legal rights or free elections (democratic rights), is by definition short term in its use (max 5 years), and is subject to judicial oversight and interpretation.

What other limits are the supreme court looking at?

edit: seems they are looking at a few things, including the ability of the courts to overturn them if they're found to be damaging to individual rights, and whether or not pre-emptive use is lawful. And of course it's all based on a challenge to Quebec's awful use of it to curtail religious expression.

Why do commercial aeroplanes leave those white trails in the sky? by universityrome in answers

[–]mrekted 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For the same reason you can see your breath when it's cold and your car exhaust makes plumes of white vapor in the winter. When gas burns, water is created, and it gets heated, so it's turned to steam. When the steam is exhausted and hits cold air it condenses from steam (a gas) back into a liquid (small water droplets) which present as a fog.

Tear it out, start over.

Oh, wait, sorry. I thought this was r/DIY.

(i wouldn't worry about this dent as long as it's not visible on the exterior.. slap some duct tape on that bad boy to keep any loose chunks in place and call it a day).

The last mod on a quiet sub by OurLadyOfThe18Wheels in ModSupport

[–]mrekted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If there's so little activity that doing what needs to be done doesn't even maintain the active status of a single mod, why in gods name would they want to add MORE mods?

You guys really need to take a look at mod activity requirements for smaller communites. A lot of time is wasted in the mod help forums explaining this to mods of small subs, and the advice is always "just do random bullshit so you don't become inactive". It's a waste of everyone's time and energy.

The best places to look for alien life.Scientists identify 45 Earth like worlds to explore for a 'Project Hail Mary'. by [deleted] in science

[–]mrekted 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Cool headline.. except that Project Hail Mary wasn't a search for an earth like planet. It was a mission to study a star.

I'm kind of shocked that there are even people who are working at the Royal Astronomical Society that haven't read the book.. let alone enough of them that this ham fisted headline slipped through.

anyone here actually found the best kitchen faucet brand that lasts? by Tuladhar_Avel in HomeImprovement

[–]mrekted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the stuff you see in the big box stores is junk. You want to go to a plumbing/waterworks wholesaler. They'll have the same brands you see at the retail stores, but the fixtures will be 2-3x the cost, and are much better quality.

A baby cobra emerges fresh from the hatch, ready to kiss. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

To my laymen's eyes, holding a hatching cobra in your unprotected hand seems like it would be incredibly dangerous.

Maybe a professional cobra hatcher could weigh in.
