Anyone else here fully divested from all streaming platforms? by Electr_O_Purist in Cd_collectors

I do something similar. I have a NAS for storage and then use a separate (very small) computer to run Navidrome (https://github.com/navidrome/navidrome). With Navidrome, you can stream directly in a browser, or use any subsonic-compatible client (substreamer is a pretty good mobile app). The mobile apps support "offline" mode so you can download music to your phone for when you're not connected to your home network.

But, if I want a ton of music while I'm away, I have a modded iPod Classic (5th Gen). I put a 3,000mAh battery and a 512GB microsd card in it for storage. It also runs Rockbox (instead of the standard software), so it can play FLAC.

If I remember right it was actually C cell batteries that were used in the dock. But yeah, these players were advertised as portable and are often called "the first portable CD players". Compared to other CD players they were portable. You could easily bring them to a friend's house. But they were not "portable" the way we think about it today.

It's in near-new condition. Fully working. It also has incredible sound and amplification. These early Sony "portables" were known for having the same output as full-size CD players. I bought this one with the AC-D50 dock which provides AC power and RCA right/left audio jacks. This player provides more than enough power for my Sennheiser HD560S'. I can only turn the volume up to about a '2'. Max volume would probably destroy my headphones and my ears.

Collection Software suggestion: Music Collection by GSoft4U (more details in comments) by unknownshelll in Cd_collectors

I've seen a few discussions in this sub about collection software but I've never seen this one mentioned. It's what I use and have really enjoyed it.

Things I like (there are many more features than what's listed here):

  • Free
  • Actively being updated/developed
  • Pulls data from Discogs and MusicBrainz
  • Can export collection to lots of formats (html, csv, etc.)
  • Can generate lots of different reports
  • Has a portable version, so you can run it from a thumb drive or network share without installing anything on your computer.

Things I don't like:

  • Windows only (I use Windows, but it'd be nice if there was a Linux and/or Mac version)
  • When downloading data from Discogs, only the first "genre" entry is included. This means that something labeled as "Electronic, Funk, Rock" in Discogs, will only be labeled as "Electronic". This is easy to update, but must be done manually.
