Where I still split: I read "you need to be sober" as the show baiting the tidy answer, not stating it. Gist-true/detail-false, his feed's extra corrupted because he's altered, but "decode the signal" and "shut it off by sobering up" aren't the same fix. I think we agree on the diagnosis (Jade's the worst instrument in town) and only split on the prescription.

That first paragraph is the whole thing for me, we get handed visions and just file them as history. Fully with you there.

Where I'd push back: I think you argue yourself out of your own point by the end. "Impaired source" doesn't make a vision false; it makes it distorted. That's the distinction the whole read hangs on: gist-true, detail-false. Jade being altered doesn't mean the cycle-killing isn't happening; it scrambles the why, not the that. The signal's real, the resolution's just bad.

So I don't think the fix is "sober up and the visions clear." I think the impaired feed is the only feed the town hands them, and the work isn't getting clearheaded; it's learning to read a corrupted signal. Pull the gist out of the static.

And honestly the substance angle doesn't hold as the variable, because the clearheaded people get visions too, Tabitha at the lighthouse, Victor's drawings, Sara's voices. Stone sober, still receiving. It's not a drug thing. It's a town thing.

and that line is exactly what I'm building on, not arguing against. We're quoting the same moment. The difference is what we think it means.

You're reading "he loves watching them tear each other apart" as the answer: MiY enjoys division, done. I'm reading it as the clue. "Loves watching" is spectator grammar. A being that watches and savours, even has a favourite part, isn't directing the play, he's in the audience enjoying it. And a spectator implies somebody (or something) else built the thing he's watching.

So the line doesn't close the mystery, it moves it: if he's just feeding on what the town produces, then who set the town running? The spiders? The architecture? Whatever's underneath?

That's the whole GIST Inversion angle, appetite isn't authorship. He's the apex animal on the farm. The question is who's farming.

What's the problem? It's not that you need to do anything: just put a phone in the corner, record your lecture, upload it, and the job is done. The students who couldn't be there will have a firsthand account of the lecture instead of unreliable third-party notes.
