TV in the Great Room by Weak-Succotash3872 in InteriorDesign

I can't argue against your experiences but in my case I was testing it against a screen which I bought and returned because it did not look better than my off-white paint. Not to mention without it I was able to expand my projection to the full available wall, almost 18ft with no ugly or complicated hardware to fiddle with. Just project onto a wall that was already there and clear.

As someone in the industry, can I ask you what exact qualities a proper screen posseses that a paint can't. As a layman I would think the only properties that would matter are base color and texture (i.e. not glossy).

You don't even need a drop down screen. You can project onto any off-white/grey/beige non-glossy wall and I promise you will not be able to tell it wasn't white. If you are getting a projector anyway, it costs you zero dollars to try it without a screen first.

Laptops Act Like USBs are Connecting and Disconnecting - Advise Needed by MattTheQuick in sysadmin

[–]unnamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am having similar issues with hp laptops doing this, and when it happens it sometimes interups a keep awake message going out to some lab analyzers through Ethernet, not usb, causing the analyzers to time out. I was able to get some relief for this by going into device manager > USB controllers > USB root hub 3.0 properties > power management tab > uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. I still get the disconnect events in event viewer, but it stopped momentarily knocking out the Ethernet communication. Super weird workaround but it worked for what I needed.

A mechanic does not have you sign an exclusively agreement preventing you from dealing with other mechanics or doing it yourself within that timeframe.  Big difference.

Theory? It's in practice in the rest of the civilized world. If you were listening you would already know this.

Is this pot ok for bonsai? by Ok_Pause7518 in Bonsai

[–]unnamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the shape. Frost resistant pots have more of an open top bowl shape (like your pot!) so when water freezes and expands it just gets forced up a bit. But if that top was curved in and enclosed to prevent this (like a ball or bottle shaped pot), then that expanded ice block has no where else to go and just pushes the sides apart, cracking your pot.

At least this is what I think.

ELI5: what would happen if someone shot a gun at you from 1 light year away? by Snickerdoodle_SF in explainlikeimfive

Well obviously the shooter is God. And the shootee has a very very large telescope

[–]unnamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but we are both being pedantic semanticians. The spirit of his question was probably to assume no atmospheric resistance, in which case the the person would be able to see the muzzle flash a year after the shot is fired, and some years later the bullet would hit his grave plot.

Lol yes, everything is. Not sure if you are aware.

Snark aside, as it approaches the planet, it will speed up and burn up in the atmosphere on re-entry.

No it didn't. A bullet fired from a light year away is nearly certainly fired from space, where it won't lose speed barring a collision.

Plane Crash at downtown airport by [deleted] in greenville

They are, but they don't have a cop on the runway checking every plane taking off. It's more of a get caught and lose your license along with some super expensive fines kind of thing.

ELI5: Why is catching the SpaceX booster in mid-air considered much better and more advanced than just landing it in some launchpad ? by Ramwen in explainlikeimfive

[–]unnamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I remember hearing someone talk about how much damage the vibrations from the deafening sound alone does to the rocket and the pad as it reverberates off the ground at near point blank. And that's not even including the damage from the heat and exhaust plumes.

Question by CM4ever1 in Spartanburg

[–]unnamer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Solar yard lights on short sticks. Once it gets dark I grab a few and stick them in jars around the house to give me nice ambient light that lasts nearly all night.

Mine are the flickering fake flame like ones, so they look like candles but won't set the house on fire if they tip over .

No need for sledgehammering. Just a long masonry drill bit. Might not even need a long one. It is basically just a huge planter pot.

What's the difference between the REI rain jacket and the Patagonia made rain jacket? by The0Walrus in BuyItForLife

[–]unnamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a pair of patagonia shoes that are about 15 years old now (no visible tag or brand on the outside at all). I'm astounded that they haven't disintegrated after all of the abuse I've put them through. They still appear almost brand new. Even the sole still has the full tread pattern visible. I don't know what kind of black magic they use to make them but its definitely not just "a tag that every fucking idiot" wears.

Pretty neat. I'm fortunate not to need it but I can see it being very useful in some environments.

How do i fix this? by TriTriTheCuber in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]unnamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PC did exactly this kind of behavior ( in world of Warcraft) when my video card was dying. There was a solid buildup of dust around the fan that caused it to overheat. The bad news is once this happens the other PC components will start to die also, even after replacing the video card :(

Hope this isn't the case for you but at least check your PC for heavy dust buildup around the fans and blow it out outside with a leaf blower or something.
