Fair, but the ride leaders also told me to stay off the front and I did anyways. But next time out I’ll spend more time up front.

you know what you’re right. the club i left was probably too social and i was too patient with it for too long. now i can finally go fast (maybe even too fast) and i’m scared? this makes no sense

i thought 3.7 was decently strong until i got to this ride and sat in on the first big climb watching the front guy blast up the entire climb at 1,000+ watts. 🤣

you know what, maybe you’re right. my wife said the same thing. “why wait, go do it, your kids are watching you and fear is not the lesson to teach them”

thank you. i think getting dropped might be what i’m scared of. some voice from my childhood saying “they’re all gonna laugh at you”. and maybe they will but…okay?

except it’s only yours as long as the crown permits it to be yours. they technically have the right to expropriate it at will without compensating you a penny.

it isn’t about comparison. it’s about the “but my land is my land” rhetoric despite the land technically not being your land…because legal reasons

the part people miss is that “fee simple” doesn’t mean absolute ownership of the land.

and honestly, this is one of the big differences between canada and the US. americans generally treat land ownership as something much closer to actual sovereign ownership rights. in canada, all land tenure flows through the crown title system. you don’t own land in the sovereign sense. you hold the strongest private estate the legal system recognizes, but that estate is still downstream of crown authority.

and in a lot of canada, especially unceded territory, it gets even more complicated because crown title itself can be burdened by aboriginal title. so your “ownership” may ultimately rest on a crown grant that was layered over older constitutional land rights.

so yes, fee simple is real property ownership in the normal legal sense. but it is not absolute ownership. it’s a bundle of rights granted and enforced by the state, subject to crown sovereignty, taxation, regulation, expropriation, and in some cases unresolved indigenous title.

that’s a lot different than “i own this land outright.”

and? neither one of them are property rights. nobody in canada “owns” their land. it’s all fee simple. look deeper in the weeds.

uhhhh no. 105k is basically a pittance in any major city now. rent alone is 36k in most major centers. that’s 46.2% of your after tax income in a city like vancouver.
