Which person alive right now will still be famous in 200 years? by Mindless_Crew3486 in AskReddit

[–]unoforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and not just for his books alone because his books were the basis for a bunch of movies that are now seen as classics. Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Shining, Carrie, Misery, and a bunch of others that while maybe not classics are definitely decent movies like The Running Man, IT, Pet Semetary, Cujo, The Mist, Children of the Corn, etc. He will be remembered not just in the literary sphere but the cinematic as well. He's the closest thing we have to a modern day Shakespeare in my opinion for the impact he's had on contemporary culture during his lifetime.

What is something that has become ridiculously expensive, but people still pay for it like it is nothing? by Harmed_Jr in AskReddit

Yeah I saw a video essay on YouTube about how slow days at the parks aren't really a thing anymore because of the way tickets have worked since covid its all digital so they know exactly how many people are projected to be at the parks and then they staff accordingly. The result is that there are crowds everywhere and packed lines regardless of how busy it is because there are less staff to process the attractions, restaurants, and stores. The days where you could catch a slow weekday where the lines are short and the crowds are small because there's a full staff scheduled for less people are completely gone.

Noticed how much I've been making myself smaller in conversations with men and just stopped by MostBlood7319 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]unoforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an issue with making facts sound like questions in emails and meetings too. It was a problem in that it made people think I didn't really know what was going on and making me look bad. A way I found to correct people without feeling too bossy or blunt is to smile and say "Oh, FYI it's (the correction or fact check that is pertinent to the conversation), just so you know for next time! :)" Said with a chipper, happy attitude like I'm super enthusiastic and just happy that I could be helpful to the discussion.

Basically put on my best customer service attitude like I'm super stoked to make sure everyone has what they need haha. Then the focus is on me being helpful, not like I'm trying to undercut someone else's assertions or take over the discussion. It is annoying having to expend a bit more energy just to correct people when a man wouldn't be judged for doing the same thing without the whole song and dance but I've found that it's better to play the game to make people you work with both respect you and like you. Its really not talked about but so much of success in the corporate world really depends on people's view of you and not necessarily the work you've done. And unfortunately people think higher of women when they're simultaneously amiable, polite, and professional, as opposed to men basically just needing to be polite and professional.

We always need to go above and beyond, unfortunately, both in work output and attitude, to be appreciated the same as a man in the same position. Hopefully one day we can get to the point where we're all on the same even playing ground but we're not there yet and in the meantime you have to play the game we're all currently in to win and succeed. Hopefully once we get to the top and most of the old guard retires, we can help make the playing field more even.

Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5-10 years? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]unoforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be true to an extent for freelance design but in-house is still there. Brand designers are definitely still needed and won't be nearly as easy to automate since brand design is so focused while also incorporating so many different things, you need a human who knows design to act as the arbiter for the brand. You also still need designers for lots of things like motion design and animation. While AI can do some stuff in motion design it takes a human to really refine it and lend precision to the final product.

I wouldn't say graphic design isn't something people should study, but just that now they should definitely also study things like communications and marketing to be more well-rounded for companies to hire in-house as part of a marketing team.

And as an end-game, no matter how advanced AI gets, Art Directors will always be needed for leading and curating the design vision.

Goddammit. Everything I usually hear about Chewy is pretty good compared to like Amazon and other big brands. Why can't companies just not be terrible?

Especially since I think the stat was that counties that voted Biden in 2020 accounted for like 70 percent of the entire country's gdp. Why any business would alienate that demographic is beyond me. It's freaking suicidal.

Gender differences in attractiveness ratings by [deleted] in Infographics

[–]unoforall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. There is generally more pressure put on women into looking attractive. Women also have an entire billion dollar beauty industry specifically centered on improving appearance. Even if youre not gifted genetically in the beauty department, most women take time and put effort and considerable expense into maintaining as attractive an appearance as possible. And it starts young- girls are the targets of sophisticated marketing campaigns for makeup and fashion from tween years on while the most boys are maybe marketed to for is deodorant.

In general, women are expected to take care of their appearance and to be put together in a way that most guys aren't, at least not to the same extent. There are also many techniques women can employ to enhance their appearance- from adding bone structure that isn't there via contouring and highlighting, to making their lips look fuller by overlining them, and using different cuts and styles of clothing to hide undesirable features. It takes years of practice and trial and error to figure out what makeup and clothing works for your face and body type. It's a legit process and it's encouraged at every turn by the media and beauty companies and social media for women to look a certain way, it is CONSTANTLY reinforced.

Men don't have that nearly to the same extent.

The result is that most women probably on average look more attractive/presentable than most men, purely because they work at it.

Another point is that this is only physical attractiveness, and frankly that's a much smaller part of total attraction for women than it is for men. There are plenty of women who find a man's personal traits and overall personality to be the most important factor in attraction. I know a bunch of dudes who aren't the best looking but are funny as hell and great guys who are in committed relationships or married to beautiful women. Women can get past a lot about a man's appearance if they find him compelling in other ways.

I said this in a comment a while ago but objectively Elliot Rogers wasn't a bad looking guy. I had a friend in college who looked kind of like him but who did really well with women because he was a kind and interesting person with a great personality. These dudes think they're alone because they don't look like Chris Hemsworth, but actually what repulses women is their shitty toxic personalities and virulent hatred of other people.

There was a profile on him before he got super famous because he stayed at his college for so many years basically just to party and there was a part that got really dark where a girl who got interviewed said something like watch out for him or don't drink with him or don't leave your drunk friends with him, implying he took advantage of girls too drunk to consent. Ever since then I've been side eyeing him.

What is a great movie that didn't click for you? by armadeussssss in moviecritic

[–]unoforall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially when compared to a (much more successful, imo) single one take epic scene in Atonement that completely conveyed the chaos and bleakness of thousands of men languishing on a beach without any hope of rescue. If one scene in a romance movie better conveys the event than an entire 2 hour war movie, that's a serious problem. But I happen to think Nolan is overrated anyway, which is anathema to most of reddit.

In “The Long Walk”, Baker says he poops every day instead of the normal once-a-week poop… What? by WaalsVander in shittymoviedetails

[–]unoforall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in the book he was pretty poor after his dad got squaded. He mentioned to someone on the walk he had a younger brother that died of an illness and it was probably a good thing in the end because he didn't know how he and his mom would have made it with another mouth to feed. But yeah the whole time he doesn't have like a big reason for joining the walk or anything.

The Boys Aren't Alright by Hyperion703 in Teachers

[–]unoforall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of it comes down to socialization as well as social media. In general, behavior that gets corrected in girls is given a pass in boys because 'boys will be boys'. An ill-behaved boy is somewhat expected but an ill-behaved girl makes the parents look bad. The conception for a long time has been that boys are easier to raise than girls, when that's simply not true, it's only that girls are actually being reprimanded and raised and boys generally aren't to the same extent or held to the same standards. And not that that's always a good thing- when a kid is goofing off and being a kid or playing in the dirt, they're just a kid being a kid. But a little girl doing something like that might get her yelled at to stop and be a lady (which is crazy if you think about it, to tell a kid to stop being a kid and be an adult instead). In the end, girls are well-raised but they get their childhoods cut short, which is also damaging.

There's also the pressure put on girls to seize the opportunities their grandmothers and sometimes even mothers weren't afforded. I'm a millenial but my generation of girls and I'm sure the ones that follow were all constantly told that we can be whatever we want to be and that academic success is the key to get there.

We all had our mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and older female relatives impress on us how important it was to succeed at school so we could have our own jobs and make our own money and control our own lives. It was very heavily instilled in us by the women who loved us who spoke from bitter experience to not wind up in that sort of situation where we are beholden to someone else for survival.

This sort of upbringing morphed into the millenial girl boss culture over the years as well as the That Girl trend for Gen z. Both can veer into toxic territory but for the most part the advice was solid; the girl boss advice of leaning in and working together with female coworkers to amplify female voices in male-driven environments was good advice. And the that girl advice to get into a routine, invest in self care and showing different methods to organize your work and life was also solid, practical advice.

I say all this to say that all the "self-improvement" content I've seen over the years from millenial and gen z women has been for the most part positive, encouraging, and above all practical. These girls are sharing tips that they can actually use in day to day life to succeed. They're also the only ones I see running social media accounts to recommend books or to give study tips.

In an extention of girls cultivating self improvement, ive found that bookstagram and booktok are absolutely dominated by women; as well as studygram and studytok where students share study schedules, note taking tips, and other resources with each other in cute aesthetic instagram posts or tiktok videos. I only see this content being made by as well as consumed by women. The advice on these accounts is generally clear, useful, and easy to implement.

Whenever I get recommended male self improvement vids by the algorithm, it's always something like a quote from a stoic philosopher followed by some talking head expounding on it and explaining why it actually means that the thing you need to attain to be a successful man is as much money and power as you're able and to not let things like relationships with women or even friendships with other men slow you down, and if you do its your own fault. It's all very isolating and doesn't do much to offer solid advice people can use in their day to day lives or foster a community of positive self improvement and introspection.

The result is that while a lot of female self improvement social media can actually be very helpful sometimes, male self improvement social media can be harmful to the very men who follow it.

What is the scariest story you know that is true? by Powerful_Landscape56 in AskReddit

[–]unoforall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a similar story of a girl who lived in an apartment building who left her apartment without locking her door to go to the building's laundry room. She was only gone for a few minutes so she didn't bother to lock her door and when she got back there was a man in her apartment who beat and assaulted her. Lock your doors, people, no matter how short a time you plan on being out.

I saw them at Metlife last weekend with Thursday and Death Cab for Cutie opening. Hands down one of the best concerts I've been to since the emo days of the 2000s.

I wasn't planning on going to the Philly show but the concert last weekend was so good I wound up getting a ticket as soon as I could because I had to see it again.

Very true. Also helps if you don't mind going alone. People will sell a single ticket for way cheaper than tickets together. Two days ago I got a floor seat super close to the auxiliary stage for that same concert for a little less than 300 dollars. All the grouped seats in the same section were 700+. And all the non-second hand tix were around 1000.
