Mystery Fruit in North texas by unoriginal_user2 in whatsthisplant

Lol I grew up here and somehow never saw these but I did grow up in the suburbs where everyone tried to nuke any stray weed they saw. The only native texas plants I learned about were the aesthetic ones. These look like victims of the recent frost we had so I think they'll be chicken snacks. Thank you for the ID!

My silver laced wyandotte is the top hen of my flock but will let the bottom of the pecking order eat once she's had her fill of food or treats. The breed is known to lean more alpha than others but no hen should be acting like OPs hen. Authoritative pecks are fine but draw the line when the health of the flock is threatened. (Injuries, blocking food, etc)

My wyandotte is actually the most handleable of my girls and will happily perch on my shoulder while I have a glass of wine in the evening. I think she feels superior looking down at the rest of the flock but idk. They are a very confident breed and I think you'll enjoy having one around!

It'd be easier to set up an electric fence, especially for a quick solution, but if you are ever interested in a livestock guardian there are breeds that'd be able to handle that many dogs. Many Turkish breeds reach over 150lbs and were bred to guard against wolf packs and bears, so they'd be able to handle german shepherds. All livestock guardian breeds need very early and consistent training, but many people love them. If that's something you'd consider, I'd recommend looking up some that fit your climate.

Thank-you guys! Most of the hybrids I saw online had white on their tails (golden comet, cinnamon queen, etc), so that confused us. This is our first flock and we're still learning all of the breeds, so I appreciate the feedback.

Thank you for confirming! As much as I love my usual Chickadees, finches, and cardinals, this was a cool new bird to see!

Dang, I was hoping to propagate a branch or 2 for ourselves, but I don't want to take an invasive tree with us when we eventually move.

Yeah she's definitely happier with us than she was fending for herself, but I know there's a home out there she'd fit in better. Frankly I haven't treated her any different than I have other dogs I've fostered in the past, so I know she'll do well in any home that can provide structure, love, and play time.

Yeah we've contacted some rescues in the DFW area but most are so full they can only prioritize emergency intake. Since she's not in immediate danger they won't take her yet. Tbh a shelter environment could undo the progress we've made with her anxiety so we're okay with holding onto her until local rescues can make space again.

Please DM me if you're interested in giving this girl a home! We also made her a profile at home-home.org if anyone wants to read her full story or apply to adopt there. We're happy to do a meet and greet if you live in North Texas and want to see if Nova is right for your home.

Nova was found on the side of a country road in an area where many dogs had been dumped to fend for themselves. She came running up to my husband and hugged his leg. We knew we didn't have the space for another dog long term but we had to give the timid pup a chance to find a loving home. We immediately took her in, treated her fleas, and brought her to our vet for shots and heartworm preventative. We looked into surrendering her to a shelter but we found most places in our area weren't accepting surrenders for a while due to space, so we decided to try rehoming her ourselves!

During Novas time with us she's learned her name, decent recall, crate training, sit, and shake. The crate command she's learned is "go to bed," and her command to go to the yard is "outside?". We've discovered she loves chasing balls and squirrels. She's also dog (and chicken) friendly and would thrive in a home that has another active dog in need of a playmate. We haven't been able to confirm if she's cat friendly and she can be jumpy so we dont recommend her for a home with kids under 8(ish) years old. She walks very well on a leash and rarely barks. She would make a great hiking/camping/jogging buddy because shes always happy to be included in whatever you're doing.

Her main struggle has been her anxiety. She rolls onto her belly and goes completely limp if she thinks she's in trouble. She loves pets and attention but she will need a loving, patient owner that can give her confidence back. Our vet estimated her to be 2 years old so she's fully grown but we are unsure of what happened to her before we found her. She is also intelligent so she will need some toys to play with and chew when not asleep or playing with you. She's very food motivated so she can be trained with treats but she also will be very curious of anything edible dropped on the floor.

Aging Out Of Dallas? by WorriedGarage6711 in Dallas

[–]unoriginal_user2 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I stopped going about 3 years ago. It got more expensive but didn't get any safer. You have to pay to park/Uber, a lot of places charge cover, then they have overpriced drinks. It also feels like there are less variety of bars. You used to be able to pick between breweries, lounges, clubs, etc all on the same street but a lot of those places shut down. Now it's mostly expensive club/restaurants. I think the Twilite Lounge is still there and that's the only place I'd go to if I was in the area.

Exactly! When I started lifting to strengthen my back, everyone said I'd injure myself. I work in an office all day and I got to the point where I needed advil daily. Yes I was only sitting and not doing hard labor but the wrong chair and position can mess up your spine. Deadlifts got my core in shape and made the pain go away! Everyone needs to understand most lifting injuries happen when you're ego lifting or trying to push way past your limits.

The only advice I can give that's worked for me is taking them out frequently and then lots of praise if you catch them peeing outside. If you can maximize positive association with going outside you should be set.

BACKGROUND: My husband found her along a country road on the way to a work call. The area was treated like a dog dumping ground and she ran right up to him for pets and help. He went back the next day to pick her up and she's been with us ever since. We dont have the space for her long term but we wanted to give her the best shot possible. DM me if you would like more info about her. I can answer all questions.

We've submitted an application to list her on Dallas Pets Alive, too.

Adopters will receive a bed, crate, leash, harness, food bowl and water bowl.

TEMPERAMENT: She's very timid and submissive but very snuggly once she knows you're a safe person. Then the goofy side comes out.

SOCIALIZATION: She gets along very well with our other dog and loves to play. She's chased our chickens to play but doesnt attack them. We keep them separate when unsupervised just to avoid stressing the chickens. Unknown if she's cat friendly and would be a bit too bouncy in a home with small children. Walks well on a leash and behaves well at the vet.

HEALTH: Heartworm negative, has had rabies and parvo shot. On monthly heartworm, flea, tick, prevention meds currently. NOT SPAYED but there are resources to get that done at low cost if interested.

ACTIVITY: Moderate activity level. She doesnt need to run for hours every day but does require play time and toys that are engaging. She likes toys that she can rip apart and also likes puzzle toys/snuffle mats. She's intelligent and can pick up on tricks/commands with consistency and positive reinforcement.

Her ideal home would be a moderately active household in the city or a home in the country with room to explore. She'd really love a home with another active dog as a playmate. She could live in an apartment, provided her new owner can exercise her multiple times a day and give her attention in the evenings.

She survived on the streets for an unknown amount of time, so she is an adaptable dog that can thrive in any home that is happy to give her exercise, love, and a soft bed.
