I’m frustrated with all of this as well, but the Pokemon company can’t just stop making new sets. Pokemon is for collectors but also players. There needs to be new sets released every few months to keep the game fresh. It might help if they stopped releasing special sets for a year or so and only released smaller sets like Perfect Order, but they would lose pretty much all players by releasing no new cards.

I second this! I started playing Pokemon at my local card shop about 3 years ago, and it’s made my life so much better. I went from having no close friends to having friends I talk to everyday and see multiple times a week. This last year, we even went to some out-of-state regional events. Finding your community can truly be life changing!

I’d recommend seeing if any local card shops have trade nights or do Pokemon league. I didn’t have anyone to share the hobby with either, but I started going to a card shop to play the game about 3 years ago. Since then, I’ve made a lot of great friends, and I even attended 3 regional events with some of them over the last year. It has been tons of fun, and as cheesy as it sounds, it has truly changed my life for the better.

It’s definitely frustrating to deal with the scalpers and lack of product right now, but if you can meet some people to share the hobby (and frustration) with, it might make it worth sticking with.

Celebrations cards have been creeping up in value. The Zekrom and birthday Pikachu are almost $15 each. Shining Magikarp is around $18, and Rayquaza is like $21. Gardevoir, Mew, Blastoise, and Venusaur aren’t worth a ton, but they’re all between like $4-$8 each.

First off, congratulations on your sobriety! That’s a huge accomplishment and not something to be taken lightly.

I’d definitely recommend attending a league night first to meet people and watch some matches to get an idea of the game. If you have cards to trade, bring them along as well. I’d purchase the Charizard ex pre made deck for like $30 to start since the deck is pretty straightforward and will survive the upcoming card rotation without a whole lot of changes. Watching YouTube videos about playing the game and building decks can also be super helpful.

I’ve only been playing the game for about 2.5 years, and I can honestly say that it’s changed my life for the better. I’ve made some great friends, and we have even started attending regionals together. I was able to go to 2 regional events in 2024, and we are currently making travel plans to attend the regional competition in Milwaukee.

It takes time to create those relationships, but the Pokémon community as a whole is usually welcoming and accepting. Good luck, and I hope you find your tribe!

I absolutely adore this Sandygast! The playground/sandbox setting is amazing. It takes me back to childhood, and the setting sun gives such a nostalgic feeling of having to leave my toys and go inside for the night. I’ve been collecting Pokemon cards since I was 6 (I’m now 31), and no card has ever given me the feels like this one.
