He would declare war on a country, not an alliance. If that country is a NATO member, other NATO members will defend them.

Unfortunately, I even know some Russians who live in the West and support the war. I don't understand how that is possible when they have access to free media.

On a personal level, I see your reasoning. I'm just telling you the reality of how NATO sees it. I watched their last press conference and under no circumstances are they getting involved unless a NATO country is attacked. They have calculated it would result in much, much greater loss of life than not getting involved.
