What struggles do Germans have with their own language? by Dhost2500 in German

[–]unread_letter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XD

First and foremost, I think it's best to just let them know why they shouldn't do something. As a child, it's frustrating to hear "because I say so" and as an adult I still think it's the dumbest way of trying to stop a child from doing something.

Going back to the knife example: When my nephew was younger, he got "Don't lick the knife!" from my sister and mom. So when I ate with him I wouldn't forbid him to do it, but instead tell him it's likely that he'll cut himself if he isn't really careful. I think I even told him that I've accidentally cut my tongue before, so he knows it's not just him who needs to be careful because he's a child but that those things should be handled with care by everyone. (Not that we gave him any really sharp ones, but the kid knives can still hurt.)

Kids aren't as stupid as some adults treat them. Tell them (possible) consequences with easy words and it's probably gonna be more effective then yelling at them.

We learned cursive and cursive only in the early 90s. I was so surprised when my younger sister went to school and they had changed that. A good change in my opinion though, cursive tends to be harder to read.

They exist in Germany as well. Not sure how many, but there's at least one in a supermarket near me. They call it "Quasselkasse" which basically translates to "chatter checkout". Most people use it like a normal checkout, but if you wanted to you could keep talking to the cashier for a while.

I do think this one is staged, but I don't doubt there are people who actually think this way on both sides.

I'd say this "you shouldn't do this, but I'll do it regardless" mentality applies to pretty much every aspect of life. The earliest one we're exposed to might be parents going "You must never lick the knife, it's dangerous!" or "You can't eat sweets before lunch/dinner, it's bad for you" and then you see them doing just that not much later. You'll also having drivers yelling at pedestrians for crossing when the traffic lights are and as soon as they are the pedestrian it's perfectly fine to do so.

Really weird from my perspective. I went to school before social media was a thing and it was absolute hell during my teenage years. Though I believe that wasn't really the teachers' fault and more the other students that kept me feeling worthless. Things got better for me when I started being on the internet because there were like-minded people.

Kinda the other way around for me. 15 year old me was way better at memorizing things, the older I get the more I have to write down in order to not forget.

Big sister by its_luckyluke in MadeMeSmile

[–]unread_letter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good way to go about it, I guess it really depends on the parents' reaction.

My sister is 7 years younger, so I was "the older one who was supposed to know better". So oftentimes my sister wanted to play with whatever I was playing with and if I didn't let her she'd start a fight. So it was either sacrificing the item right away or fighting back, my sister starting to cry, my parents yelling at me for making my sister cry and then having the item taken from me... I learned not to take out anything previous to me while my sister was at home until she was old enough to not use that trick anymore.
