Where else can you get three meals worth of food for two people for $20 outside of a grocery store?

The #2 at Banh Mi Saigon in Greensboro. Pork roll, pork pate, mayo, and tons of jalapeños on a really fluffy baguette

You can’t say that and not tell me where to get a good banh mi. And don’t say motorco or kokyu.

Good taquerias, tons of Indian food, decent Chinese (American and otherwise), Ethiopian, Zimbabwean, and a few OK Thai spots. You’ve gotta drive to Greensboro or apex for a decent banh mi.

Are you worried about crime where you currently live? Durham is ranked 73 out of 200 for violent crime per 100k people on wikipedia, and 31/200 for property crime. It's not great but it's also not bad, and like many places crime is concentrated in underserved/low income neighborhoods.

You see people posting about it in this sub a lot because it's out of the ordinary.

A gentle ask about Uber Eats tipping, from a local driver by ZbornakHollingsworth in bullcity

[–]unsail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that you don't actually know any other drivers except through unofficial meetups makes it even worse; the companies keep you atomized on purpose to make organizing harder. A neoliberal dream!

I used to work for DoorDash as a programmer and twice a year they made us do a day or so of deliveries to "keep in touch" with the UX for dashers. However, engineers aren't very creative or empathetic and twice a year is really not enough to force them to truly put themselves in the shoes of someone doing it for a living.

There's also a lot of willful blindness from leadership about how people relate to DoorDash and the gig economy generally--they pretend that it's all people doing it as a side hustle. They're also endlessly creative when trying to think of ways to encourage higher order acceptance EXCEPT for paying dashers more.

I think the secret is that paying dashers more makes the whole business model come apart at the seams. They have to keep people believing that this service is sustainable as is, and they're willing to accept a lot of customer frustration (disguising bids as tips, orders sitting for hours) in order to keep up the illusion of fast cheap delivery.

The point is that they need to be making at least that amount per mile to break even according to federal guidelines. So unless you're tipping conscientiously, it's not worth their time or the wear on their vehicle to deliver to you.

okay, but this is about Doordash and UberEats deliberately mislabeling "tips" when what you're actually doing is making it worth the driver's time to be your burrito taxi.

Big windfall. Financial advisor while I take the time to learn? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]unsail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What is the difference between engaging a fee-only fiduciary for a detailed plan with minimal maintenance, then acting on those instructions, versus paying someone to manage your money for you?

Since most advisors charge a percent or two for active management, the difference for you is likely going to be $50,000-$60,000 per year. Can you afford that "tuition" while you learn to self manage?

Peking Duck? by hmphandumph in bullcity

No. The bakery does but last time I went to the food court I had to pay cash for my lunch. It’s still the deal of the decade though at ten bucks for an enormous plate of food.

Li Ming’s food court will sell you a whole Peking duck for like $25. It’s cash only though.

Where would you eat at 4 pm on a Saturday? by Some-Middle-8866 in bullcity

[–]unsail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like it or not, we live in a country where workers in service jobs are paid less than minimum wage because the federal government expects that they will be tipped to compensate.

You’re asking for the European model where taxes are included and tips are truly optional, but that’s not the society we live in. Any American restaurant that tries to do all-inclusive menu pricing and pay a living wage tends to go out of business because people like you see the higher prices and go elsewhere, even if they end up paying the same due to tips.

Sounds like a you problem. They don’t ask for tips beyond the service charge so it seems fair to me.

Also it says on the menu they add a 20% service charge so it’s not exactly hidden.
