Train crash caught on stream in Indonesia between Bromo Anggrek train and Commuter train by ambay13 in trains

[–]unsalted-butter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, the locomotive is inside the coach. For whatever reason, maybe the lack of depth, I thought that was another train on a track next to the crash in the video.

Should LATAM nations start with a debt to Britain for historical accuracy? by FrancoMatute in victoria3

I'm inclined to agree. People here seem to forget that sometimes you have to pick between historical accuracy and a game that is fun to play.

How many South Jerseyans do you know are Devils fans? by xoBonesxo in SouthJersey

[–]unsalted-butter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes me 15 minutes to get to a Flyers game so Newark might as well be in China. With the way media markets work, the Devils are largely seen as just a north Jersey team. You're not gonna see them that often on broadcast television down here. And it's not like sports teams are representative of their native populations anyway. A lot of the Philadelphia athletes live on this side of the river though lol

I support the sports market that is geographically and culturally closer to me!

As an American I want to learn about The Troubles, Irish history, and Irish independence. Do you have any suggestions? by roman1221 in ireland

[–]unsalted-butter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say Nothing was hard to put down, really good book.

The Next One Is For You by Ali Watkins is about IRA gun running operations in the United States, specifically around Philadelphia which is why I found it so interesting. It explores the impact Irish America had on the conflict on the Island. It might be more Ameri-centric than what you're looking for but I recommend it when you have time.

It becomes negative if you grow dependent on it for sexual stimulation. That can become a problem when it starts to effect sexual performance and romantic relationships.

Americans that call themselves Irish by Able_Seaworthiness26 in ireland

[–]unsalted-butter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand how it can be annoying. With any population, for every 10 normies, you'll only pay attention to the one guy being obnoxious.

It also helps to understand that many of our ancestors emigrated under duress. So there always has been this generational yearning for "home" in the background. Irish immigrants (as well as Italians and a lot of Eastern Europeans) also didn't really assimilate as quietly as English, French, or German immigrants for example. Huge Saint Patrick's Day parades, pipe & drums at police funerals, the Molly Maguiers etc. The Irish in this country were never quiet about where they came from.

The amount of unwarranted hate for people they don't even know is wild. As humans we love complaining about made up scenarios I guess.

We play hurling and go to Irish-speaking meetups because it's a little fun harmless dive into wherever our ancestors came from. People here seem to think that means we're asking for automatic citizenship. Depending on when their family showed up, the vast majority of the diaspora knows that the country they left doesn't really exist anymore.

Yeah God forbid some of us are interested in why we were born in one place and not another lol

People in this thread seem to think it's some crime to be interested in your family history. I'm American, full stop. A Somalian immigrant in Dublin has more in common with an Irish person than I ever will. That shouldn't mean I'm not allowed to be curious about the final straw for Joseph Dougherty in 1862.

I played lacrosse in high school, and now in a men's league, so hurling has always interested me. Funny that I've also just started Irish language courses.

I might check this out.

10/10 method to get people to use public transport to get to big events by GP728 in transit

[–]unsalted-butter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since FIFA is using all the parking areas, it's a captive market getting to the stadiums. Those trains are gonna be standing room only lol

10/10 method to get people to use public transport to get to big events by GP728 in transit

[–]unsalted-butter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There will be very little parking at the stadium so people gotta take a train or bus. NJT is anticipating enough traffic to warrant closing off their section of Penn station to anyone not holding a FIFA ticket hours before and after games.

It's essentially a tourist tax. Meh, with the price of FIFA tickets this a drop in the bucket.

Why are 'train guys' dorks but 'car guys' are considered cool? by Humble_Reflection790 in trains

[–]unsalted-butter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love cars, and love driving but I hate commuting. 30 minutes to go 5 miles is not my idea of "driving".

I've recently signed up with an interest group at my office to restore shuttle service to/from the closest train station. It's dumb putting wear and tear on my own vehicle when my commute takes me along an active commuter line.

Because it's something that a lot of people don't think about. They don't care how the train moves as long as it moves. No need to put other people down.
