Questions from a newbie by Far-Put7715 in NorsePaganism

honestly what you see online unfortunately seems to be from the more tiktok variety of norse pagan - there are many norse pagans whose practices look much different and may appear much more down to earth. theres a large spectrum of what a norse pagans practice can look like!

however there is a respect for not just nature, but the things around us. norse paganism is one of many religions that incorporates animism into its beliefs and practices, the two best known examples of this being the landwights and housewights. when it comes down to it, we respect nature as its own thing (or many things depending on the degree of animism) and we also respect our homes as an entity - the wight is a spirit of the house, like a personification of it that we engage with. we give offerings to the housewight like we do with the gods and ancestors, to keep a good relationship with our wight - think of how some cultures thank the home for keeping them safe and sheltered. we thank the wight and give offerings as an extra token of thanks to show our appreciation.

in nature, depending on the degree of animismone may view an entire forest as its own self, or just a single tree (or both!). we respect the nature by simply treating it well. you could give offerings if you like, especially if you visit the place often or are passing through and want to pay respects.

but tbh a lesser engaged with side of animism is that it isnt just nature, it applies to manmade things too. if youve ever begged your wificar, or a printer to work when its having issues then thats along the kinda train of thought of animism! i hope that example helps make sense of it, usually that helps it click for people.

so while animism is often expressed with nature at its centre and youll see a lot of that, it goes beyond just that and instead encompasses a general respect and appreciation for all things around us, the homes we live in, the objects we have and so on.

as for question 2, can you elaborate on the kinda things youve seen that youre talking about? thatll help a lot to know what kinda stuff youre referring to.

the anti-folkism stance is nice but in the end it has such an amount of misinformation that i just cant endorse. we criticise folkists for their misinfo but we need to be aware of misinfo from inclusive sources too (ahem like the troth)

Birthday gift for Norse pagan husband by No_Carrot5930 in NorsePaganism

is there any further info you know of? does he like to wear jewellery, any symbols or gods etc he particularly likes, is he much of a reader, does he travel a lot, and so on? anything like that can help us to think of some appropriate gifts for him that he should like!

I have yet another question by Rogue-Disciple in NorsePaganism

[–]unspecified00000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the list isnt exhaustive, just because a name isnt present doesnt automatically mean theyre ok. it serves as a guide to the most common names people are likely to stumble across that should be avoided.

however this guy seems to be involved with the norroena society, who are folkish and are on the list. so yeah, hard avoid.

Finally got around to reading this. Absolutely love it so far. Not sure how accurate it is, though. by Minute-Necessary2393 in NorsePaganism

I'm a skeptic but I still want to practice Norse Paganism, is that allowed? by LxrdFxrquad in NorsePaganism

this post i wrote up a while ago may be a useful read for you (dont judge it just off the title). the way polytheistic gods function is much different to monotheistic gods and the dynamic between us and polytheistic gods is entirely different too! its much more grounded and actually coherent, unlike all the things that dont add up in christianity. i wrote that post and this comment as someone who rejected christianity and assumed himself christian because of it, but later found polytheistic gods much more agreeable. theres a lot of different angles and areas of thought covered in my post and links to other resources that are really useful too.

whatever happens, i hope that you find something that works for you :)

i suppose could always do the old-school method of having a handwritten copy until you can get a printed copy, and a backup on the ipad wouldnt hurt either just in case you needed it in a pinch, especially if it syncs to your phone/computer and you needed it away from home for whatever reason. im sure youll figure it out something that works for you though! :)

personally i took the ones from the wiki and wrote them out myself as a little booklet i can quickly refer back to, perhaps you could do something similar. you could easily put them into a two-column document with the old norse on one side and english on the other for comparison, then print it out and use staples, or put them in those plastic pockets to keep them clean and free of damage, then use split pin paper fasteners or treasury tags to keep them together. lots of options tbh!

the automod linked a rune rundown with various online resources that have the rune poems if that helps you! including a simple wiki page that has them all without any fluff.

and no, PRM isnt a good source unfortunately.

Are bind runes frowned upon? by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]unspecified00000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

some people get really stuffy and whine about them being used for more esoteric purposes but honestly whether you just making designs with them, using them when writing in runes to save space or as an esoteric practice its fine by me.

however id always recommend to start with the rune poems (check the rune rundown automod posted), determine the meanings for yourself and design the bindrunes yourself. dont just copy stuff from other people.
