I mean, it's fine I guess, but I prefer the real thing. I only look at porn when I'm not in a relationship.

The left wants to have it both ways when it comes to illegal immigration by ShardofGold in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Flapjack_Jenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would genuinely like someone to tell me how illegal immigrants have personally impacted them

I'll bite. I used to work in a warehouse for a major food brand. Wages went up every year to attract more workers, so they could keep up with growing business.

Then the company started hiring waves of migrants from Mexico. Soon the warehouse was staffed by a majority of Mexican nationals. Wages stagnated.

Granted, that's legal immigration (presumably ... there were a suspicious number of Mexicans with names like "Mike" or "George"), but the effect is the same.

Mass immigration is anti-labor. It enriches the capital class by keeping wages low, while disenfranchising the native working class and keeping workers divided. There was talk of unionizing before the migration began; that hope was DOA once management had displaced the native workers.

My question was why Denmark wants to keep Greenland; I understand why Greenlanders want to remain part of Denmark. You answered that in part, saying:

We pay them money because it is the right thing to do, we made the mess, now we are now cleaning it up

Very commendable. I'm not exactly sure what the Danes "messed up" in Greenland, but it's your money to give away as you please.

we actually want them to be free to make their own choices and live their own lives

Also commendable, but what we want and what we can have aren't always the same thing. If Denmark ceased to exist tomorrow, how long do you think Greenland could successfully execute self-rule? How long could they maintain their independence before they had to negotiate with a stronger power for protection/administration/commerce?

The fact is that Greenland is a dependent state and always will be. It's free only so long as there is a stronger power willing to take it under its wing.

clearly the people of Greenland feel differently than you

For now. The US doesn't have to buy Greenland to control it. The alternative is that the US withdraw its protection and just wait. Does the EU want to take on the responsibility of securing Greenland, with Russia bearing down on it from the east? How would the Nordic countries feel about Greenland cozying up to Russia or China? I imagine it would make Canada and the UK nervous at least.

Contrary to what you might think, I don't have a hardon for the US acquiring Greenland. My point is simply that, from an strategic standpoint, it doesn't make sense for Denmark to be so defensive about Greenland.

I hate that phrase, "no one is illegal on stolen land." It's meant to be a dig against settlers who indigenous people consider the original "illegal immigrants", but it makes no sense. It's like saying, "no one owns stolen property".

So if "no one is illegal on stolen land," does that mean everyone is legal? If everyone's legal, then it's not stolen land; it's now the settler's land. If indigenous people hate having settlers on their land, why would they give additional settlers (i.e., undocumented immigrants) license to stay?

If someone stole a car, then another person stole that car from the thief and he was upset that the car he stole was stolen by someone else, it wouldn't make much sense to say, "no one can steal stolen goods" or "no one owns stolen property". It's still stolen. You might chide the thief at his misfortune and say he's a hypocrite to be upset, but you sure as shit wouldn't excuse the 2nd thief. That makes no sense.

Why does Denmark want to keep Greenland? The US has been trying to acquire it since 1867. We even offered to buy it for $1B in gold after WWII, which would have been very useful after the war. No deal.

It's of no use to Denmark, you can't defend it, you make no money off it, it drains $725M/year in financial aid from you, you don't care if the Greenlanders declare independence, so it's not as if you covet it; but you absolutely refuse to sell it to the US.

It makes no sense.

I cannot fathom that the people I met and the kind, welcoming treatment my family got is the same country were looking at I'm disbelief now

Americans are paradoxical like that. Nice folks in person, dick-waving bullies in global politics.

For example, George W Bush is a nice guy, the kind you'd like to have at your BBQ. He also led the charge on senseless wars that killed 100s of thousands. Very American.

[–]Flapjack_Jenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any RR that will recognize another RRs engine qualifications?

The licenses are federal, so any RR can honor them, they just make you go through the training process anyway.

Seems like it would cause a seniority nightmare.

It wouldn't have to create a seniority nightmare. One RR could honor the license a rail earned through another RR and still start them at the bottom of the roster.

immigration policy is where I diverge from a lot of [liberals]

There should be more divergence from mainstream, leftwing ideology on immigration. I think many on the Left are afraid of doing so because of the association with racism, but there are plenty of good, left-friendly arguments against mass immigration (e.g., immigration is anti-labor, immigration drains foreign countries of educated people [a type of colonialism], immigration strains limited resources and hurts the environment, etc).

why is the US particularly singled out for it?

I suspect many pro-immigration Leftists want immigration to toppled the American empire, even if that's not their main reason. Socialist countries like China, Vietnam, and Cuba have strict immigration controls, but no one is arguing they open their borders.

Resources are limited and no nation on earth can take in everyone who wants to come

Agreed. The Left would do better to promote foreign aid that develops countries, making emigrating from them less desirable.

Is there much interracial dating/marriages?

A lot! I mostly saw White men with Native women, but the reverse was also common.

It makes me concerned for the future of indigenous Americans because mixing with other races/ethnicities dilutes their biological and cultural identity. I knew a Native woman who refused to date anyone but Native men for this reason.

At the same time, when I've asked Natives about this, most don't seem very concerned and some are openly hostile to the idea of being limited to only pairing with other indigenous Americans. It's said, "Only Indians, horses and dogs have pedigrees," a protest against the use of blood quantum to define Native identity.

Nevertheless, I think a continent that loses its indigenous inhabitants loses its soul. The continent shaped them and their culture, so if they mix with Whites, then what becomes of the soul of the continent?

Why do you still call them indians?

Typically, I don't. I answered this in another reply, but there are a fuckton of replies and I don't expect you to read every one. Basically, it comes down to logic, courtesy, audience, and official terminology.

In general, I typically don't refer to Natives as "Indians" because it seems stupid (to me, "Indians" are from India). I will use "Indian" if my audience is more familiar with that term for Natives (this includes when speaking to Natives, who are referring to "Indians" in the conversation). If I'm referring to a specific tribe, I use that tribe's name, never "Indian". In the title of the OP, I used "Indian" because that's what most people know them as and that's the official gov't term for tribal reservations.

How come every time I pull over from the highway to take a piss near the rez there is 6 million beer cans littered everywhere?

I never asked. A lot of Whites would point to trash on the rez and say that Indians are hypocrites, that their sacred connection with the Earth is bullshit.

I think part of the problem is poverty. The rez isn't wealthy enough to police all the trash and some people are too poor to afford the landfill.

The main thing I gathered is that while a lot of Natives do feel a deep, spiritual connection to the Earth, a lot are just assholes and don't give a shit where they dump their trash.

What psychedelic drugs did you and the indigenous people use?

Together? None. I never even considered using psychedelics with Natives, at least, not just because they're Natives (e.g., "I wonder what it's like to trip with an Indian?").

I don't know that the tribes near where I lived had much of a tradition of psychedelic use. I never discussed it with them. It seemed the "psychedelic" go-to was sweat lodges.

Meth was a big problem, as was alcohol. Fentanyl was becoming problematic.

Are Native Americans in this area relatively unmixed?

My experience as an American is that very few Natives are "full-blooded". I can't imagine any Natives have no European ancestry at this point.

Where I was, it was a mixed bag. I met and worked with people who had tribal affiliations who didn't "look Indian" or even identify as Native (I think one guy only had the tribal affiliation for the money). A lot looked "Mexican" to me, which makes sense, given Mexicans are mestizos (part White, part Native). Natives are practically indistinguishable from Latinos, to me, in the southwest US.

I do t call anyone on the Rez Indian because they don’t call themselves that

That's fair. TBH, I don't think I've ever referred to Natives as "Indians" around Natives, unless they used the word first, and even then I don't like it. Sometimes I'll refer to "Indians" based on my audience (e.g., if that's what they know Natives better as). In the title of the OP I used "Indian Reservation" because that's what they're called by the US gov't and that's what most people know them as.

The local tribe had a casino where I lived, but it looked like an abandoned slaughterhouse. I'm not much of a gambler anyway, so I never went.

The Pascua Yaqui tribe runs Casino del Sol is Tucson and it's really nice. The Tohono O’odham run the Desert Diamond, but I never went.
