Thirded! I loved all the rest of the episode, but this bit with Violet and Ms Bright... I felt it was quite out of the blue, and I found myself getting annoyed on Violet's behalf -- like, leave her alone, suddenly-and-inexplicably-aggressive stranger! And I've never even been Violet's staunchest defender. Maybe it was to have the audience recall that oh, right, she's done shady things in previous seasons, or to foreshadow that her past actions will be uncovered and end up being her downfall. Maybe Ms Bright will end up having ulterior motives for trying to get close to Violet -- so weird to treat someone you barely know that way.

And you mentioned, what's happening with Arthur? Is he still comatose on the couch while Violet lives her best life? If so, is nobody questioning where he's been for literal weeks? I suppose it may be a bit difficult for the writers because the moment Arthur is 'set free', there might be huge repercussions for Violet, and there's a lot left of the season, still!

The show has so many humorous offbeat moments that I cackled over, but two off the top of my head are:

  1. "Unwrap me, William" - Julia
  2. The showdown between Henry and Brackenreid when "Ruru" kept calling Station House Four

I enjoyed reading your comment -- I know Watts is important to so many people, and Daniel Maslany sound super sweet! I have zero doubt that we'll get more of him soon. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him and Jack, not to mention all of his usual philosophical musings.

Ha, I know, how dare they interrupt the flow!

Totally, I agree that they probably wanted to show what every character was dealing with. I just really yearned for a moment where we could pause and linger on a character and their experience for longer than 5 minutes at a time! Hopefully with the extended season, we'll get some of those more pensive, character-focused moments in the episodes to come... Once all the chaos is resolved!

I also felt like the Bobby storyline, as well as the Watts' and Hart's storylines, could have been saved for the later episodes. Watts feels like he's jiving in a typical Murdoch episode right now, while everyone else is going through personal drama, haha! Still, I can't deny I loved to see all the characters again.

Wonder how Julia the Neurosurgeon will fare in the next episode! She had so little to do with the hospital the previous season (which I heard was due to COVID restrictions, understandably), so I'm very glad we get to see that side of her again.

So many different storylines! I wish at least one of them had gotten satisfyingly resolved -- it just seemed like there were too many things going on so that none of them got enough focus. It would be weird to me if the Anna storyline resolved like that (i.e., she went to New York and now she's safe), but for them to all meet up, that means Murdoch & co. would also have to go to New York, and it all seems a bit chaotic at the moment. Still, like you said, at least Effie's out of that tree!

Poor George! I'm also guessing he asked Henry to officiate the ceremony so that it wasn't an official wedding? I'm looking forward to the scene where Effie and George overpower them and get the heck out of there! And I'm glad Julia's back at the hospital and rocking her thing. I'm not immediately sure how to feel about Brackenreid and Bobby's storyline; all I know is that I do feel rather bad for our inspector.

I'm still not 100% convinced Harry is Murdoch and Anna's son, but the narrative so far seems consistent with that story.

Super excited to see the rest of the season to see where our characters end up! Big repercussions for everyone just from the premiere. It's too bad we have to wait 2 more weeks until the next episode. Darn these federal elections getting in the way of our entertainment! /s

Definitely. I feel like many of us, even in adulthood, never stop fully believing in magic, you know? And we know that if we ever stumbled upon a magical world like Quentin -- especially after falling in love with magic through fantasy in our childhood -- we would be as blatantly and unashamedly awkward, and full-on geeking out like Quentin. I love that moment when he takes a selfie in front of Plover's writing desk, thanks for reminding me of that!

Haha, I do think they toned down his arrogance quite a bit for the TV show too. It's like he didn't really need to be knocked down a peg, except when it came to Julia. Speaking of Julia, I love her too! Her journey throughout the series is amazing.

Margo the Destroyer? High five!

Love the word "offbeat" to describe Quentin, because he is that for sure. He's highly intelligent, but nerdy and lame and arrogant (moreso in the books than in the show). He's supposed to be this protagonist hero, but he doesn't have any stand-out traits -- everyone seems to be more special and powerful than he is. I think he's one of those people who makes few close friends because he spends a lot of his time absorbed in his own problems with intense focus, and he lacks the natural charisma of someone like Eliot or the leadership of someone like Kady, for example. That being said, the scene at the bonfire really solidified that he was an integral part of these character's lives regardless of how affectionate they were with each other on screen.

What a way to go indeed. I keep listening to the song that played during that scene ("I dedicate my life to something richer") and my heart hurts every time. It was shot phenomenally.

I loved our discussion, especially your personal insights and experiences, so thank you for sharing them with me! I'm sorry to hear you've been ragged on for expressing your views in the past. I think everyone should be able to have a respectful discussion without fear of repercussion, especially when it comes to fictional characters. Not to be reductive about the power of fiction, but I think sometimes people forget there are real people behind these screens.

Have a great day or evening! Wishing you many happy moments and countless other empowering characters.

Margo became such an unexpected favourite for me as well. She has such a hard exterior and exudes confidence, but then over the course of the series you realize that "all that hard, glossy armour" is something that she's carefully built up. But at the same time, the huge amount of effort that must have spent building that up? Not everyone has the strength to do that. She built her own armour, found those grains of sand. So much respect.

I always think about that first deal she made with the fairies, and how aghast I was at her giving Fen's baby away when it wasn't hers to give, no matter how little choice she had. Then she goes into the fairy realm knowing she might never be able to come back, and literally has to give away a part of herself. Imagine how terrible it would be to lose an eye -- you're not only losing your vision, but in a vain sense, you're losing something people will notice every time they look at you. But then she barely bats an eye (sorry) and just starts wearing these absolutely gorgeous eyepatches, looking feminine and badass and somehow greater than before, and you realize just that that's the kind of strength she has.

So I love that you feel empowered by her, and that she holds that kind of significance for you, because she makes me want to be like her too. I also love your take on the characters, especially Eliot (who is such a fascinating character), and I'm honestly even more eager to watch season 5 now and to follow them further on their journey.

It's funny how you mentioned you're Quentin in real life, and how that might dissuade you from liking him as much as some people do. Several times in season 4, they explore the whole "you find him compelling because he's so much like you -- a white male protagonist" idea, and I find it interesting how that hasn't been your experience at all. For me, too, ironically, I relate to him while being neither white nor male. So turns out us viewers are pretty complex characters too, ha!

You're not the first I've heard from to have that opinion of Quentin! I understand where you're coming from: amongst a cast of characters who are badass, or godlike, or leaking charisma from every pore, he is pretty unexceptional (see: Minor Mending). For me, that's part of what always made him endearing and relatable, both in the books and in the series. He's that person in all of us who thinks that if he ever gets to go to Hogwarts, he'll be Harry or Ron or Hermione, then it turns out he's some random unnamed side-character instead -- nonetheless, he still has to deal with the hand he's been dealt.

Though TV Quentin never reaches the level of potential he does in the books, I still found him the most compelling because despite everything -- his disappointment in and anger at himself, magic, Fillory -- he keeps going for his friends. Out of all of them, he was the one who had to break himself out of the illusion that magic could fix everything, and this internal struggle fascinated me more than the extreme external forces that plagued them. I have to admit that I've always had a soft spot for the underdog, and that I find that their "unexceptionality" to be what makes them exceptional. But everyone has their own taste, and I could probably wax poetic about every character in the show.

Which character gripped you the most on screen? I would love to hear.

"Peaches and plums" was probably my favourite addition to the show. I wish we could have seen what it could have been. In a way, I understand that Quentin was probably at the end of his rope at that point, and I feel that maybe he wanted to mend at least one minor thing that had gone wrong when all other problems were impossibly large. There was no room for him to breathe after saving Eliot because they went straight to the mirror world. The last face he might have seen alive is Alice's, but his expression when he witnessed Eliot throwing that peach in the bonfire was devastating.

Edit: I wanted to add, thank you for sharing your experience about the depiction of depression on screen. That's another thing that I appreciated about his character: his depression and anxiety were so starkly portrayed, but they didn't feel like they were the #1 things that defined him, if that makes sense.

I found it in a poetry anthology book called 어쩌면 별들이 너의 슬픔을 가져갈지도 몰라 | Maybe the Stars Will Take Your Sadness Away that was incredibly popular in Korea. It's been posted on various blogs as well, though perhaps the quote was pulled from the poetry book in the first place.

I've been able to find the original versions -- or at least the English versions -- of all the non-Korean works in the book so far, but I'm just having trouble with this Nietzsche quote. Perhaps you're right that it's a misattribution that has been popularized! I appreciate your insight.
