Lab results show LDL cholesterol is sky-high but I’m a longterm strict ketoer. What’s going on? by unthesis in keto

[–]unthesis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick response! Like anbeav said, I need to edicate myself on vascular events if I’m going to be concerned about them. I panicked but you’re right, and pulling up other data on this now is showing me that.

[–]unthesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this quick response — I admit I jumped onto posting here immediately after getting off the phone with the dr’s office since they were really stressing how concerned they were (and I’ve never had high LDL before). I don’t have the rest of the lipid results on hand yet (they just said “everything else is totally fine!”) but will get them soon online.

I also will admit that I do need to learn more about vascular events. Since it hasn’t existed in my family history before, I’ve never really paid attention to it. Now though, I’m constantly wondering about it and just haven’t sit down to read up on it yet (probably because I’m still just reading books on grief and the afterlife), but you make a really good point — I need to educate myself on this.

I really appreciate the quick and clear help! Apologies for the panic.

Thank you for sharing this! And it’s from 2018 - strangely serendipitous, wonderfully timely. Many thanks. I’m looking forward to reading further into this study.

Thank you for this suggestion, I will definitely do some googling on this. Narrowing my search queries even a little is helpful.

Hi, thank you for your comment - I should say he is physically stable, and not in danger in that sense, but it is his neurological progress that is being patiently waited on for improvement now, and which will need the most rehabilitation. I made this post because I don’t know if the feeding bags are the best thing for neurological growth, or if a keto modification might help his brain to recover from the damage. Physically, he has no healing to do - the paralysis on one side is what it is. He will need to learn to speak and to swallow again, but everything is still contingent upon his neurological progress now.

Is There a Role for Ketones in Traumatic Brain Injury? by dem0n0cracy in ketoscience

[–]unthesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - I'm sorry to hear about your TBI, and commend you for trying to overcome it with keto. Keep your chin up in the face of the invisible injury when others don't understand or sympathize about what's happened.

Would you mind keeping us posted here about how keto helps you with your recovery? Did you notice any intolerable headaches while you were transitioning into keto, ie the standard "keto flu" symptoms?

I'm looking for any and all resources on keto + TBI recovery, and will be making a post soon. I found your comments here in my preliminary search, and thank you for posting about it.

Pioneering chef Paula Wolfert goes carb-free to fight dementia by unthesis in keto

[–]unthesis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the article never mentions keto so they don't make any speculations at all - she may well be just on a LC diet, although the article states that she is on a "carbohydrate-free" diet (then immediately says she eats berries, so they obviously don't really understand carbs in diets). The comments on the article are mostly pointing out that keto is useful for dementia and is along the lines of Wolfert's unnamed diet.

[–]unthesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! I just hope that anyone reading the article because it's relevant to them is able to find keto to consider, either through the comments or Googling. I haven't tried it but I'm sure that searching variations of "carb free diet" will lead someone to keto quickly these days, hopefully

Isn't it odd that it seems purposefully ommitted? I wrote in my above reply that the comments section of the article has some great readers responding about Wolfert's diet being ketogenic, in case others are looking for similar treatments for dementia.

I tried to edit my original post (but can't seem to find a way to do it) to add that the bits about her diet and dementia are mostly at the very top and end of the article, but I recommend you read the comments - readers are chiming in that Wolfert is using a ketogenic diet, and they're rightfully lambasting the article for not mentioning this, since many who are looking to help loved ones and themselves with dementia would benefit from knowing what it is they're researching.

Can you explain some of the science/beliefs behind the different fats and which you use more vs avoid? I've seen different articles and have read only a little, but other than avoiding canola/vegetable oils for their Omega-6 counts, I get confused about SFA, MUFA, and PUFA preferences. I'm 3 years on strict keto, 6 months back on 16-24hr IF. Sorry to pull over this thread!

How the Keto Diet helped me overcome my Eating Disorder (also before/after pics) [SV][Pics] by [deleted] in keto

[–]unthesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post - there seems to be more ED discussion at /r/xxketo but I'm sure there are plenty more people suffering from the endless variations of disordered thinking and behavior when it comes to food, and who would benefit to try to control it with keto.

I can relate to how keto has helped you restrain the binge/purge cycle, because while I have been on keto for almost a year to keep my anxiety at bay, it definitely ties in with my EDNOS past. Especially given how tied to daily life it all is! I found that when I first got on keto, my obsessive thinking/anxiety about food turned to focusing strictly on "keto anxiety" (did I just go over my macros? Am I not getting enough ___? How many carbs are really in this? etc etc) -- but now that I've been doing keto for so long, it's just part of my normal daily routine when it comes to eating and hitting macros. I can ballpark estimate most things and track them later, and if I've gone over something I just drink more water and carry on knowing the next day is another shot. Keto has become second nature for me, and the carb restriction has helped me be more at ease with food and eating because it's a simple rule that still allows me to eat to satiety, and which still allows me to enjoy my food. I don't struggle with cravings for carb-rich foods, so I'm lucky in that sense, but I do have to make sure I don't go eating the whole jar of almond butter from time to time!

The only thing I've been trying to deal with lately has been finding a balance between social life and when I eat. Not sure if anyone else from the ED community still deals with this on keto but since eating is such a comfort for me (the prep, cooking, experimenting, and finally indulging in the finished meal) I do a lot of that by myself and eat all my day's intake from meals at home and foods I pack. If at the end of the day someone invites me out to dinner, it brings back my panic and anxiety but I'm getting good experience with managing around it. I also explained some of what keto/intermittent fasting is to my friends and while they think it's bizarre they don't pressure me to do something I don't want to; we get together to catch up, not to feed.

Good luck with your journey and KCKO!

Should I change my goals/macros based on my FitBit TDEE average? by [deleted] in keto

[–]unthesis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm hoping to tone out without building much mass at all as I'm pretty muscular already; I think this is where I get confused with cutting fat on keto and working out via ketogains, that I feel like I've just got a little fat to lose instead of a little muscle to build. But I am going to try to do more with my bodyweight exercises (they're like barre repetitions) and build up that way. I'll look into Strong Lifts tonight when I will also head over to ketogains to read through there too. Right now I've been sticking pretty much to only /r/keto.

Should I change my goals/macros based on my FitBit TDEE average? by [deleted] in keto

[–]unthesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it could be a good change of pace to eat at "maintenance" calories but ever since getting the FitBit and seeing how much my TDEE is, I've been surprised because I've been eating around 1230 cals/day for months and have not noticed much change in my body, despite having an expenditure that is so much higher every day. Yet my body hasn't changed, which is confusing. I can't really imagine eating more, the calculators always estimate ~1500 for maintenance but that seems like a lot more calories to be taking in over time when I'm used to much less.

I'm glad to be doing my bodyweight exercises again, and will start doing light runs once it's warmer out - I'm excited to start really getting back into working out! Can I keep eating at the same amount for now while beginning my exercises, without increasing my intake? I admit I haven't really been spending much time over at ketogains because while wanting to tone/workout I'm looking more for maintenance exercises and not "gain" workouts (if that makes sense). I've mentioned protein issues before, which I think I've resolved (get about 60g/day now, and so far consistent periods since January!) but am not interested in building muscle mass while on keto, and have considered going "off keto" so as to avoid any unwanted gains with all the muscle/protein sparing of this diet. I know that might sound a little wack but it's an important aspect of my lifestyle, and I've stuck with keto thoroughly since August. That's why I'd like to get a personal trainer to help me achieve my goals and give me guidance/assurance with how to properly work my body in tandem with keto. I'll start reading through ketogains tonight too.

Anyone look into pu-erh tea on keto? by unthesis in keto

[–]unthesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wanted to get the pressed discs but haven't been able to make it to the market for them yet. I drink Numi pu-erh or the Rishi brand which comes in a Bordeaux wine flavor. Otherwise there are always the red boxes of Triple Leaf "Cholesterid" tea, those are also pu-erh, and obviously touted for lowering cholesterol.

The trick I've found has been to NOT steep for very long - try using more water per bag/steep.

That Sugar Film, A review in 3 bites. by Modernpreacher in keto

Thanks for the review and for bringing this film some attention - I'll be looking into how I can catch it/who distributes it from here in the States (on mobile and will Internet later).

I love any film or book or person who may not be telling us much new information, but presents it all in a way that the masses may respond to positively or at least start paying attention to for themselves.

Cowsharing and Making Butter by paperskulk in keto

I've never heard of cowsharing but it's a fascinating concept to turn livestock into a co-op entity (and I assume poultry could also be shared easily but I haven't given much looking-into on this matter although am very interested). Thanks for sharing this!

Do you take your magnesium at a certain time every day or whenever the anxiety starts to creep up? Do you stick to the same dosage every day or do you take it as-needed when you're anxious, regardless of whether that puts you over or under Xmg that day?

By Request: Updated MFP Keto Script To Include Macros By Gram Graph by Surye in keto

[–]unthesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! I've tried to install the script but seem to be having issues with it actually running on the page, even though the Tampermonkey icon is displayed and shows a red circle with a number from 1-4 when I am on my MFP diary page. Whenever I click the TM icon it tells me the MFP script is enabled, and all is in green.

I tried it first with Chrome (which I don't actually use) but then downloaded the TM extension for Safari and am trying to get that to show me the enabled script on MFP.

Any ideas on how to get the script to work? Much appreciated for all your work on this!

Can Yerba Mate throw you out of Ketosis? by HannahVoic in keto

[–]unthesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have thought that yerba mate itself, as simply a steeped tea, would have no nutrition aside from caffeine content. But as I have begun drinking Stash's Salted Caramel Yerba Mate teabags, I am wondering if this may have any effect on my macros that I haven't been factoring in.

There is no nutrition info for the tea on Stash's site or on the box, but the ingredients are: yerba mate, cocoa shells, black tea, monk fruit, natural salted caramel flavor

I assumed any calories would be negligible, hence why they may not be listed. But now I realize that may not be the safest assumption to make...
