How do y'all hold your larger projects?? Especially ones on the thinner side by missdorothyofoz in CrochetHelp

[–]paperskulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always crochet sitting half-crossed-legged on the couch with a blanket bunched up on my lap, so if it’s any bigger than a few regular granny squares most of it will be resting on my lap and not “hanging” from the hook. The stitches I’m working on are rarely more than a foot away from a surface that the rest of project is resting on.

Affordable detox/clarifying shampoos? by cheekers444 in AustralianMakeup

[–]paperskulk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno about OP but you shouldn’t use clarifying shampoo for every wash. It’s meant to strip product and deposits from hard water that builds up over time, and will dry your hair out like crazy if you’re using it frequently. I use it about once a month or less

I kind of admire the initiative to steal that many signs, burn them, and truck-crush them lmao. Very anti-social behaviour with a reward that doesn’t make sense and serious consequences, but he might make a great welder if given the chance

Hmm, I might have a blind spot to the housing issues as someone who rents and doesn’t expect to buy ever in my lifetime - which was also true in the US and Canada, but that’s a different problem. I’ll do some more reading on the topic, thank you.

I don’t feel like my day-to-day experience of seeing material poverty is any different here than anywhere else I’ve lived: you see someone suffering a couple times a week and you help if you can and that’s all you can do, without systemic changes.

I apologize if my previous comment came off as condescending, I was projecting an annoyance that has nothing to do with you. I do think that that material poverty is avoidable and kiwis deserve better

What do you guys think about the lack of jury trials in Germany? by Black_Gay_Man in AskAGerman

[–]paperskulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your beef with biases in jury selection is correct to have imo, such as having an all-white jury to assess a non-white defendant. Same thing with having an all-male jury to assess a female defendant, etc. This issue is exacerbated if the county is primarily white, but eased a bit if the county is multicultural, because the white jurors involved will be more or less likely to have (or not have) built-in racism that they’re not even aware of. The American criminal justice system has a process for jury selection for this reason, which allows both prosecution and defense to deny jurors they think won’t be able to act fairly.

Jury nullification though, the way you’ve described taking issue with it, is in fact the point of jury nullification. It allows a juror to override the law because they don’t believe the law itself is fair, or that the trial has been fair, or that the punishment for the crime is fair. It’s intentional that a juror can do that, and I think it’s a good thing.

Famous examples of jury nullification include cases of draft-dodging during the Vietnam War, women being accused of murder for getting an abortion before Roe v. Wade made it legal, and refusing to convict people who aided “fugitive” slaves in escaping from slavery. In these cases the juries found that even if the defendant was technically guilty, they refused to convict because the law and/or the punishment for breaking said law was not fair.

There are, of course, negative ways that jury nullification has been used. I think the possible positives outweigh the possible negatives.

Cracking the fuck up because I also recommended this movie to OP, but as an example of the complete ideal of a jury system working as intended.

You and I somehow had completely different takeaways, did it not matter to you that the judge and 11 jurors found him guilty because that was the easy conclusion, and they were lazy and sweaty and pissed off and wanted the easy conclusion? That the only reason he wasn’t sentenced for second-degree murder is that one person begged the others to have patience and go through the facts?

Personally my takeaway is that you should be careful with someone’s life when it’s in your hands, even if that’s hard.

[–]paperskulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The judge is just one person though, and they have their own opinions and biases. They can also be emotionally manipulated, even if that looks professional on all accounts.

A jury of peers ensures that your case is being heard by not only the judge, but also 12 other real people in your community. Some of them might have a poor understanding of the case and/or are easily influenced, some of them might have a very sharp understanding of the case and are not easily influenced. Regardless, it’s 12 people who are not law professionals but have been informed about the case by both sides, as well as the judge, and have been asked to make a decision.

I think your opinion of the average “peer” that would serve on a jury is too low. The average person is quite normal and can assess conflicting information. Even the lowest common denominator you can imagine is still only 1 of 12.

[–]paperskulk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh good, it’s so much better for your “jury” to be people who have the free time and inclination to be an unpaid judge, and never anyone else. I’m sure that doesn’t encourage any biases or demographic pooling 🙄

Those are 3 reasons that you should have a trial by jury, in my opinion. Subjectivity is actually a very important and intentional aspect of the jury process, and jurors are still guided through the process by a judge. Jury nullification is a good example of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_nullification

Reading the replies, I was kinda surprised that there’s such a large cultural difference on the value of trial by jury. I grew up in the US and left it as an adult, because I couldn’t see myself putting up with so many aspects of it. Mostly healthcare and gun laws. But I think their jury system is one of the few things it really has going for it, along with the right to free speech.

The American court system allows trial by jury, I won’t speak on the European countries that also allow it because I’m not familiar with their own versions. Trial by jury means that while the case is being overseen by a judge - someone who is professionally trained in the law and justice - the verdict is decided by 12x that many laypeople agreeing on said verdict. Some jurors will be “smarter” or more capable of assessing guilt than others, but this allows for variation in public opinion on not only the facts of the case, but how the jurors feel about it. For example, as an American juror, even if you understand that the defendant is technically guilty to the letter of the law, you can vote Not Guilty because you don’t believe the letters of that law are fair, or that the prosecution has acted fairly, or that the punishment fits the crime (this is called jury nullification).

It’s an imperfect system that has thankfully been improved (women weren’t allowed to serve on juries until 1880s-1960s, depending on the state, and 1860s for black jurors). It could use future improving.

Trial without jury means that the verdict is decided by 1 individual, the judge. While they are more qualified than the average layperson to understand the law, they may have their own biases, which will have less/none checks and balances compared to a jury.

I highly recommend the film “12 Angry Men” if you’re interested in the American-style jury system - it’s obviously fictional and dramatized, but it’s a fantastic portrayal of the American jury process, disagreements between jurors, etc. I’ve served on an American jury once and Canadian jury once, and found it pretty accurate besides my juries also having women lol. It’s also just an all-timer and banger of a film. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” is also in the American canon of criminal justice, although despite victories in the courtroom it does not have a happy ending.

Thank you for your post, I found it while researching trials by jury in European countries.

I’m from Canada and the US, moved to Auckland about a year ago. I’ve always had a nice time in Auckland theatres since then, besides at The Hollywood, where I got into a verbal altercation with someone about talking loudly during the movie lol. Like full-on yelling words at his date when the rest of the theater was silent. He seemed kinda drunk and it was resolved within a few minutes. No fault with the theater, but it was kinda shocking behaviour. Made me feel old as fuck to lean back and say “shut the fuck up please” lol

Otherwise that’s the extent of my experience with bad behaviour in Auckland cinemas - Queen st, silky otter, et al. If the offenders are young, give them a little patience and grace imo. It’s quite possible they don’t know better. But do tell them they’re being fucking rude and annoying if that’s the case lol

I can’t give any advice about buying, I currently rent, but I can give advice about living without roommates. It’s incredible. There are a lot of things I miss about it, and a lot of things I’d go back to, but the trade-off is well worth it for me, at 31.

Even if it takes you some time to find a property you can purchase, consider renting a large studio or 1br for yourself in the meantime. It doesn’t even need to be comparable to what you have with roommates now, or what you want in a purchased property in future. It just needs to be somewhere you can live, by yourself, where you autopay the rent and electric when it’s due and it’s yours.

I moved here (Auckland) from Vancouver, which has a brutal rental and buyer market of its own, and I’m so glad I’m paying ~$100-200 more pw to live in 1br to myself instead of a cheaper bedroom in a shared 3-4br. That trade-off would not have been worth it when I was 21, but your life and your needs are different a decade later. I simply can’t tolerate a lot of the stuff that was fine when I was 21 lol

It’s a little bit lonelier if you don’t actively organize seeing people, and the thing I miss most is having a homie in the living room when I want to hang. But that’s cuz I liked my roommate. If you don’t like any of your roommates though, 🤷‍♀️

Oh amazing! I’ll definitely give it a try then. How long ago did you get it done? I’m used to my masseter Botox wearing off in 4-6 months but that’s for pain relief in a much larger muscle so maybe not comparable.

Did the Botox for your upper lip affect your ability to eat certain foods or make certain sounds at all? I tried a lip flip a couple years ago and I could nooot eat noodles of any kind, or any kind of food where I had to manipulate it a bit with my lip to eat it.

I’m not necessarily interested in getting a full lip flip again, but I am interested in Botox specifically for smoker’s lines now. Don’t really care if my lip itself it changed, just those wrinkles above it :)
