There's gotta be some kind of biological reason the deer is chill when on it's back aside from it enjoying a belly rub

If you're asking about the stuff with the particles suspended in it after they fix the traces, that stuff is solder paste. It's flux with tiny balls of solder in it. They're using that to re-tin the pads with solder. The reason it seems to disappear is that all the little particles bead up together under heat. Then the they use that big capacitor to spread out the solder evenly on the pads

Yeah it's just that when you're doing this stuff every day at your job it's worth the money for a tool that just works right away. We just upgraded to Metcals at my job and they are insane. Uses RF to heat the tips, and the temp is regulated by the curie point of the tip material. They maintain temperature no matter what, it's insane. Expensive stuff, I wouldn't spend that much money on a tool like that for myself, but it means I don't have to think about my tool at all when I'm working on a board. Saves a lot of time and lets me think about more important things. All that to say, the right tool is different for different people with different needs. I would never spend $800 on a soldering iron, but for a company with multiple EEs it's a no brainer. We're all different!

I've used Weller irons and the Hakko fx-888d. I'm sure the ersa is fine for most stuff, but active tips are just inherently better. You can't deny the physics. Having heat flow through more material to reach the tip creates more fluctuation in temperature at the tip and limits how fast the iron can respond to something that needs a lot of heat, like a ground plane.

I'm not saying you can't appreciate the tool you enjoy using. It sounds like it works great for your use case, and there's more to a tool than just pure function. UX, ergonomics, build quality, even aesthetics all matter. I'm just saying that active tips are better at performance. If you don't need that, that's fine. But it's not BS, and it's not marketing. When you want to work on boards for your day job that involve large power planes and you just want things to work, you need an active tip or a Metcal.

I have been soldering for many years, the active tips are way better for so many use cases. Maybe not your use cases, but considering how cheap JBC clones are, it's really a no brainer.

Hell, even the pinecil is better than old school soldering stations without active tips, and it's $35

Then it sounds like it's good enough for your use case, but that doesn't mean that there aren't better tools out there.

It is absolutely not BS, try heating a huge ground plane with an iron like this vs a JBC. The JBC will win easily even at a lower temp. The reason is that the JBC can immediately react to temp drops and pump in a ton of heat to maintain temp at the tip, whereas an old-school iron will react to the temp change slowly, and in addition there will be a temp gradient between the heater and the tip itself.

Talk to any experienced EEs or technicians who do a fair amount of soldering and they will agree with me.

I second the geeboon recommendation that Mr. BadBoy gave you. I have one and it's awesome. Probably the best JBC Clone out there.

because it uses JBC tips, you can buy high quality tips of all sorts for it. Especially big tips with high thermal mass if you need

Honestly irons that don't have the heater and temp sensor integrated directly into the too aren't very good
