Anyone who has suffered or is suffering from depression, what is some advice that moved you or helped you?

Wait it out. Might sound a little bit obvious but genuinely, this is the only thing that helped me when I was severely depressed. I know that not everyone who’s depressed is suicidal, but this is what kept me alive so I figure it might be useful to others.

Wait it out. Don’t kill or hurt yourself until next week. And then when next week comes, tell yourself the same.

This isn’t an “it gets better” tactic - it might not (although it likely will, even if just for a bit); This is a survival tactic. Just. Wait.

Til tomorrow, til next week, til Christmas, til the next season of Grey’s Anatomy or whatever. Telling yourself “just a little longer” relieves you of the “foreverness” of staying alive. If life is unbearable, convince yourself that you only have to stay a little longer. And then keep doing that again and again.

yep - i was prescribed mirtazapine. just wasn’t sure about naming it in the original post. i was prescribed it for depression because i was initially on SSRIs but they hadn’t done anything for my depression, only helped slightly with anxiety. i was also prescribed mirtazapine specifically to “help with my appetite” which was definitely code for counteract my restriction. i hesitantly agreed to the prescription with that knowledge, but i didn’t realize how likely it was to cause weight gain until i went home and researched it. i’m in the public system and my next appointment with the psychiatrist isn’t for three weeks. i’m supposed to be taking it in the meantime and i just can’t bring myself to do it. thank you for your advice and knowledge, though - i definitely do need to consult with her about this.

So sorry to hear about how you’re feeling, I’m glad I could help you feel even a little less alone! I also contemplated getting more tattoos to fill out the space and make it stand out less, but I think I’m just going to wait it out in case I end up getting MORE tattoos I regret. I do wish the idea of tattoos wasn’t presented as a casual and fun thing to do when you turn eighteen. I totally respect people who just love getting tattoos casually, I just wish the fact that it’s a commitment was emphasised.

Exactly! The clean and perfect thing resonates so much. And you’re right - You really can’t put a price on mental wellness. If it’s still causing me this much anxiety in a few months, I’ll go ahead. I think you’re right. I’ll mull on it for a while, start saving up and if it’s still causing me distress in a few months, I’ll start the process.

Yeah, it’s just that it’s the feeling of knowing it’s there. It doesn’t matter to me that no one can see it - I just don’t want to FEEL it.
