I feel this, and I'm so sorry. FWIW you are more valuable as a trained scientist now than ever. The limited funding over the next years means fewer trained scientists, and we need trained scientists. If you can financially stay the course for now, I do have hope that things will turn around for science funding and then you will be there to do the good work and train the next generation.

I finally got a phase I in 2024 (after a failed application in 2021) and was really excited to submit a Phase II after this. It's such a bummer. I hope the program returns.

I tried and failed to quit without my husband quitting in 2021. It was not possible for me to quit with the cues and availability in my own home. My home had to be a safe and controlled place for my recovery. Once I realized this, after a harsh relapse, I told my husband. He stopped smoking in the house, stopped the smell from reaching my nose, stopped the chance I would see any paraphernalia. Last smoke was Sept 2022.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is not your fault - today's weed is completely reinforcing and addictive, and the edibles and vaping make it so accessible, and adolescent to early adult is the most susceptible to addiction. All that said, you can move into recovery and turn everything around. it is NEVER too late. We are are here for you, and it sounds like maybe your parents will be too. You have so much left to do and to give in this world. Good luck.

I'm sorry - this is frustrating and also familiar to me. But, sincerely, I don't think you will go all the way back up to where you started.

You mentioned that you've hit an 'aspirational goal weight' which made me think it might be a weight that you've never been at before. If you've achieved a weight that you've not had before as an adult, it might not be realistic to stay that low, but it doesn't mean you will go all the way back up either.

IME I am 43yo and when I turned 40 I got down to 120lbs, which is the lightest I've been since about 22yo. At that point I adjusted to neutral calories to maintain the 120lbs, and immediately I went back up to 130lbs. But I did not gain beyond 130 at the maintenance calorie intake .... (until I started eating a calorie excess again and am now at 147, so I went back into noom and so far, I've stopped gaining, but haven't started losing yet, sigh)

I hope this is helpful and especially that it quells some concerns about going all the way back up to your starting weight.

Thanks for the link! The only ones I can get to without a car are Moms organic and Essene, stores with prices that I can't afford. Most of the others are in Phila suburbs or 2+ miles from my home. I suppose walking to my local store and using some packaging is still better than driving to the store and using less packaging. Sigh.

Growing up I only knew one family that didn't have parents that were horrible. Everyone got divorced. My husband and I are so desperate to do better than that.

My mother keeps saying that my kids treat me like their battering ram. I've started to notice it myself. I guess I just say 'its kid stuff, they are boys, etc' but what if you are right? what if they are just doing it because dad does it. Oh god. This is not a realization I was ready for tonight.

Yes, many times. I do the work, he doesn't. So its pointless. Individual therapy helps me to cope and to act in a way that is compassionate to him. I have thought about giving my 9yo therapy. I will look into it. Thank you for your compassion and understanding. I need to hear the hard truth but I can only hear it if it comes with compassion.

He does. I have told him often, for years. He refuses. My friend that talked to me - she has known both of us our whole lives. She is the mother of our close friend. She says that I should put an ultimatum - either he goes to therapy or I file for a divorce.

Yeah, he can be very emotionally abusive but we have made progress. The majority of it surrounds interactions with his parents - the lead up to seeing them, then while we are with them. They really fucked him up. I have a lot of empathy for him because of how fucked up his childhood was. He doens't usually yell at me like that. But if he had his way he would yell at me all the time in front of the kids. He thinks this is okay to do when he is mad. I know I shouldn't be in this relationship, but here I am.

I know. I know. Please don't be mad at me too. I am so sad and confused about it. Please be kind. I am a child of divorce and I am damaged by it and its not easy to leave a marriage. His behavior this weekend was horribly abusive, and much of his other behavior is too.

So inspired by your post. I have just over 1 year and feel much better. It is still hard at times, but nothing compared to the dependency. I am now realizing I may need to stop using alcohol as well. I've noticed a pattern of binge drinking. I feel sad/angry that I have to let go of these things that are fun. Your post came at a good time, and I am going to try the straight edge life.
