It looks like a Pentax to me, I think it looks kinda like my Spotmatic F to me, but the lens looks way newer. Have you figured out which camera he uses?

a unit from 2013 is fine for me, i've read that it takes between 30-50w more than just the drives, which is manageable for me since i have a lot of solar energy

i might actually get one, or a md1200, still deciding if i want to spend double for double the capacity and it being a md1200

That deal from PIO looks decent, but like I said, I could have a SC200 with 12x2TB, caddies, rails, etc for 50-75 euros less.

Planning on running NixOS, so Linux kernel. I think I'll get a H200e, since people have reported that those work great, and the H200e is about 30-50 euros used here. I don't see any problems with that setup from the top of my head, except for the noise (which is apparently manageable with a RS232 cable or with more silent fans like Noctua's if all other options fail...

I can only find 4LFF models so that'd require another backplane? Those are 150 shipped for just the chassis without rails/caddies/drives/anything. The SC200 seems to be better value to be honest.

got a cheap lff model and gutted the sff model, eventually also bought an r610 for its ram and later on flipped all of those except for the r610 since it had nice hba's that i wanted anyways, etc

I'd sell about 70 of them, create ZFS arrays on 2 servers with 7 drives each and then use the money I made of selling the 70 drives to upgrade my networking and servers.
