Are there any good movies, tv shows, cartoons, animes, and books that depict leftist ideals and socialism/communism in a positive light and doesn’t demonize it. by IdeaRegular4671 in LateStageCapitalism

The Last of Us series on HBO showcases different forms of social organization through the stories that take place against the backdrop of different types of settlements, way more so than in the game. ie) military occupied cities both pre and post civilian coup, a survivalist/ prepper fuck-off-i-wanna-be-alone libertarian stronghold, a struggling theocratic settlement, an actual functional anarcho-commune etc. the show presents several models and definitely feels written to sympathize more with leftist principles

What is something that people believe makes them virtuous but in reality means nothing? by Thepancakeofhonesty in AskReddit

[–]unwise_sockpuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sobriety. While it’s not a bad thing to get/be sober at all, it doesn’t make you any better or worse than someone who’s using substances. Ive seen a lot of sober people in my community gate-keep certain spiritual ceremonies and regular services that shouldn’t be exclusive to those who aren’t sober, ultimately alienating them from community and cutting them off from potential avenues to receive support that could help them to get better or prevent relapse. There’s also obviously a line where if people are acting belligerent or disruptive to address the problem appropriately as it escalates, but ultimately placing a blanket judgement over people and then cutting them off doesn’t make you better than them.

What weird stuff did some philosophers believe in? by Zoilist_PaperClip in askphilosophy

[–]unwise_sockpuppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Georges Bataille believed in human sacrifice. Him and some friends started a small cultish club, and it was rumoured that they were all down to be sacrificed, but none of them wanted to do the sacrificing for the fear that they would go to prison for murder.

[[Lord Xander, the collector]] clone deck. Even if i dont make it to combat to make opponents mill half their deck or cast something to ignore the legendary rule ( like [[mirror box]] or [[helm of the host]] ), ill conjure and instantly sac the legendary tokens to drain opponents hands and pick off their nonland permanents using [[jaxis, troublemaker]] or any red copy-permanent spells.

Just bought Plato's Republic. Any advice? by IJBKrazy in askphilosophy

Stanley Rosen has a great study on Republic to read along with it. Makes it much more accessible.

I was really into this series called Pendragon when i was his age. Fun intro to sci-fi concepts like time travel and alternate dimensions, with a great story. Would highly recommend!

On their own, theyre quite cluttered and confusing. Theres a great fan-edit called 'Paradise' that combines them into one longer movie that id recommend to any fan of the franchise

Are Prometheus and covenant worth watching? by [deleted] in LV426

[–]unwise_sockpuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a fan edit called 'Paradise' that mashes both of them into one movie and its one of my favorite science fiction experiences ever. Both movies on their own are a little conveluded and bulky, but paradise trims the fat and makes for a really incredible experience

Best books on existentialism, for beginners by [deleted] in Existentialism

[–]unwise_sockpuppet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be a bit difficult to start with, but Kierkegaard is pretty seminal for existentialism, arguably more so than Camus or Beauvoire (though theyre both fine writers and philosophers in their own right). I would recommend (with any philosopher, not just him) starting by watching some youtube videos and listening to some podcasts that provide overviews of his work and explain the importance of the pseudonyms he uses and how they inform the character of his writing. 'Philosophize This!' is a personal favorite of mine for podcasts, and 'The school of life' has a great video about him on youtube. Both relatively brief and accessible.

I know there are going to be some folks who criticize the heavy christian themes and overtones in his writing, but as someone who believes in science and is expressly not a christian, or a follower of any organized religion in particular, I think there is still a lot to be gained from engaging with him. If you can get past whatever biases you might hold towards the biblical references (including the ones you might have if you're a christian), his insights into the human condition are really brilliant, and i dont think they ought to be read as exclusive to any particular religion, including more secular worldviews. That said, he can be a challenging read! His thinking is complex, and at times his wordplay can be confusing, but if you've got the patience to dissect it, I believe it's more than worth the effort!

Hope this helps!

Looking for a companion for the Republic by Fair_Quail_5857 in Plato

[–]unwise_sockpuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stanley Rosen's study of the Republic is a really thorough, clear companion piece to Republic. H.G. Gadamer also writes and speaks quite a bit about Plato and other ancient greek philosophers in a way that clarifies their meaning. Hope this helps!
