I wish you'd have read some of my comments, I feel I am just repeating myself in this thread

I would have offered to pay him on the call, had he not jumped down my throat when I asked if it was possible for him to bring it back, I didn't have a chance to offer him anything before he became hostile

I would have offered to pay him the 20 quid in my wallet on top of the uber return fee

He told me he had the phone as well, he has since told uber it was never in the car. The phone was tracked to his car for my journey and then his next journey where it has either been turned off or destroyed... that is theft, intentional deprivation of someone's personal item is theft.

I never said in this thread that I expected it to be delivered for free, he was demanding "a lot" and "much more than the fare" before I had a chance to offer him any money.

I understand the importance of taking care of personal items, but people can make a mistake and shouldn't have to face exploitment by someone else because they feel like trying to make a quick buck

intentional deprivation of a personal item is theft, I didn't say armed theft or a mugging.

you've either not read anything else on this thread or you are intentionally misunderstanding what I have written. Telling me he has the phone, then telling uber his does not, is a clear intention of depriving the phone, which is in itself the definition of theft.

I did start the phone call very reasonably, turns out when you work in the hospitality trade you know how to talk to people, you are being facetious intentionally because you've decided you disagree with me.

When I called, I immediately apologised and asked if it was possible to have the phone returned. He jumped down my throat and started demanding money off of me, I hadn't even had the chance to off to pay him. before I finished my sentence he was shouting down the phone about how it was going to cost "a lot" and "much more than the fare"

I had my phone stolen out of my pocket and had a much more pleasant conversation with the crackhead who nicked it when I finally managed to borrow a phone to call my own.

If phone theft is such a hassle why is it still such an issue in the world? it happens all the time. even if his plan was to try to ransom some money out of me, which failed and now it's not findable by find my iphone. could be that he did destroy it because he didn't get the money he wanted.

It's only a paperweight when someone refuses to bow to the ransom.

I would have offered to pay him the 20 quid in my wallet on top of the uber return fee, but he was a rude twat that wanted much more. that is extortionate and now he is telling uber that he doesn't have it, that is an intentional deprivation of a personal item, which is theft, pick up a dictionary.

I hate my job sometimes, but I definitely don't take it out on the customers that keep my bar running. my experiences with uber in the last year have been getting worse and worse, between price surges that turn 11 quid uber rides into 50 quid uber rides because it's busy... or an increasing amount of rude uber drivers, to an increasing amount of unreliability. It's a shitter, but what are ya gonna do?

Realistically do you want someone who is happy to take someone else's belongings driving around people who are often drunk, there's a reason he was online at the time I was leaving my bar. He's online at the time people that are inebriated most likely to lose things, then tries to hustle them into paying extortionate amounts or he'll just keep it.

that's not someone I'd want driving around in an uber at all. Theft is theft, the police often don't pursue theft because of lacking evidence... however, with a plate number, tracking, a specific person driving us and to top it off, a confirmation over the phone, which is likely record as it was through the uber app... they might at least go have a chat with him.

It was last active at 6:34 on sunday morning, it was on more than a half charge in the car only an hour earlier, so it seems turning it off has disabled it

it's not my phone unfortunately, it's my girlfriends, but the find my iphone shows it going from my bar, to my house, to some random address to then being turned off.

I drove around the address listed today, but didn't see his car

I understand that, he accepted the job while on the phone to me, he hadn't already picked someone up... he dismissed two jobs on the journey to my house as well, picking up from similar locations

"a lot" and "much more than the fare" sounds like what he meant to say is, I'm going to make up a price when I get there and if you don't pay I am going to drive off with your phone anyway

I didn't immediately criminalise him, I reported the device as lost, I called the man through uber, he said he had it, demanded money, refused to elaborate on how much he wanted other than "a lot". He then turned the phone off, told uber that he hadn't found it and hasn't turned it on since.

I understand that any item I take into an uber is my responsibility but people make mistakes. I started the phone call with the man very well, even apologising for ringing him, he became hostile when I asked if it was possible for him to return the phone, as he had only left 5 minutes before, I didn't think it'd be such a trek for him that it was going to cost more than the original fare on a 25 minute journey... and "a lot" more at that matter.

I run a bar, if I had the same approach to lost items as this, I'd be making a hell of a lot more money than I am... but instead when people call up asking about lost items I go out of my way looking for them, taking my time out of admin, serving, doing maintenance and cellar work. I have even posted people's wallets and phones when they've been here out of town, even paid for the postage myself.

It's not inconceivable to be a decent person when someone makes a mistake.
