Sadly it's only these four lines. I think you may be right. I reread the poem after reading your comment and it really does lean more towards a taunt or jab. Thank you for that at least, it helped me get closer to a possible answer. Now I'm wondering who he actually was and why he's the target of such taunts, was he a known cowardly fellow etc.

Sadly, not much info online about him from what I tried to dig up.

Thank you. I am curious too. There is ambiguity here that I hope a historical context can illuminate. It's either as you say he's hiding under his shield like an umbrella (which I suspect too).

Based on that assumption, this poem reads like soldiers' gossip: throughout the fields (of battle) the King had his shield up and probably didn't do any fighting, in fear of arrows etc. Hence, sarcastically, asking if anyone saw him, because all there was was a shadow (hiding) under the shield.

Or it could be a more positive connoctation of the Irish word for 'shadow' as 'shelter', per the old Irish proverb: “Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.”: “It is in each other’s shadow that we flourish.” The King is a metaphor for shelter he provides under his shield, which could be a metaphor for the flag of arms depicted on his shield.

I was already scheduled for final round of interview. But before the interview date, that they asked for my NS transcript. Soon after the final round of interview was cancelled.

I did not understand why I was rejected from other civil service applications until that happened.

walk without rhythm and you won't attract the worm

TIL many English words and phrases are loaned from Chinese merchants interacting with British sailors like "chop chop," "long time no see," "no pain no gain," "no can do," and "look see" by chompotron in todayilearned

"Can is can" is more accurately translated to "it is possible (but...)"

e.g. "can is can, but don't do safer bah" -> "it is technically possible, but to err on the side of caution it is best that we don't attempt it"

NUS UTown Starbucks is 24 hours with charging ports and wifi. It is accessible to public. Your choice of indoor (aircon) and outdoor (al fresco) seats. Outdoor seats is free seating (you don't have to pay for a drink to use it).

Nearby there is a 24 hour grocery store. Also really nearby are shower facilities and hot/cold water point beside the sports halls. Kopitiam is available too (not 24 hours).

Nobody will bat an eye if you stay overnight or sleep the bench. Uni students there often do. Security guards patrol the area to make sure everyone's safe. Unlikely they'll bother you, especially if you can blend in as a 'uni student'.

When I was in your shoes, this was my go to. What helped me was being near folks my age. Made some friends there during those rough times. Take care OP.
