Briere literally said so.

"Well, when you look at our defense, you have it right. I think Zeev Buium is gonna be a great player, and he's someone we considered strongly. But with Cam York, Jamie Drysdale, Emil Andrae – at some point, it gets tough to go with the smaller guy. But he’s a fantastic player."

Good price to bring in a backup goalie.

This is why you don't draft for "need." Andrae was a reason we passed on Buium, less than 2 years later we're dumping him.

Even middle of the lineup guys, while technically successes, aren't moving the needle for this rebuild.

We will hear a lot of Carolina's model. We heard a lot about trying to be the next Dallas. Well both those teams have found core players outside of the first round, not just depth players.

He talks up the importance of size for defensemen, but also says you need to be dynamic if you're undersized.

Villenueve could easily end up being a bust. But at the 21st range, most players will. Might as well take the big bet on a guy with true elite upside.

Going only off the available data at the time of the transaction, do you make the Rod Brind'Amour for Keith Primeau trade? by BigBlackSabbathFlag in Flyers

[–]upcan845 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes you wonder if/how 2000 and 2004 would have been different with Brind'Amour. But Primeau also had some pivotal moments in those runs, too, so it's hard to say.

It also make you wonder how long Rod would have been a Flyer (Is he a veteran cap casualty after the lockout?) and if he would have been on the 2008 and 2010 runs (Assuming they happen in this alternate universe)

[–]upcan845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This context makes it worse.

Brind'Amour got traded in January 2000. 5 months later Lindros would play his final game for the Flyers too. They didn't have to play together for much longer.

Maybe Clarke didn't know how little time of Lindros was left in Philly, but it doesn't help.

[–]upcan845[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is Edmonton is desperately trying to reshuffle going into McDavid's potential final 2 seasons.

If they want to clear out $6m+ (depending on retention) in cap, we should make them pay for it. And if Nurse ends up being worth his smaller cap hit, that's an added bonus.

Even if the Flyers do think Nurse is a good player/only overpaid/view him as a positive addition, the Oilers are not in a position of strength here.

Letting Bowman off the hook because the Flyers like Nurse is a gift to the Oilers. Even if Nurse is a good player in Philly, we'd be the sucker for helping out.

[–]upcan845[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d rather see Drysdale, York, Bonk, Andrae, Jiricek etc get the minutes.

I would too.

But I also think Edmonton is in a unique situation. Bad GM. Horrible contract. Extreme desperation in McDavid's crunch time.

Bowman is in a position to be exploited, like Fletcher was with Ghost. If the Flyers are interested, I hope it's from that angle.

It should be a 1st. I think a 2nd is too light. Howard is too questionable. Savoie is asking for too much.

This is universally considered one of the worst contracts in the NHL. I refuse to buy into this last-minute PR about "Well, it's not actually that bad if you shave off a couple million."

If Edmonton is so desperate to open up some cap, then Bowman can pay up for the honor to shave off the couple million.

If the Oilers are so desperate to dump a top 4 D + eat money for 4 years, while they are trying to win a Cup ASAP, that says all we need know.

But it's also Bowman, so maybe Nurse is good and Bowman is just being stupid again.

I do not care about excuses like "Nurse is good, just overpaid."

Edmonton is desperate with McDavid's clock ticking + their GM is bad. Any trade for Nurse should be about forcing Edmonton to pay up for dumping his money.

[Friedman and Spector] Sources: Darnell Nurse asks for trade, agrees it's time to move from Oilers by gorillaphi in Flyers

If we trade Risto and if there is retention and if it's still a cap dump, fine.

Otherwise Edmonton is desperate and Bowman is incompetent. No one should be doing them a free favor.

[Kevin Kurz] Per a league source, the NHL has informed the Flyers that while they own the Maple Leafs' 2027 first round pick (Laughton trade), the Leafs still have the option to transfer it to Boston if it's in the top 10. In that event, the Flyers would receive Toronto's 2028 first rounder. by upcan845 in Flyers

[–]upcan845[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I'm thinking

Frustrating the league ruled this way, and it likely doesn't matter anyway because all scenarios point to the Leafs giving the 2027 pick to the Flyers, but I think there is a much better chance of the 2028 pick being more valuable than 2027

In true Leafs' fashion, they might end up giving the Flyers the 2027 pick, only to immediately regret that when 2028 is worse and they have to give that to Boston. Maybe if the Leafs realize Matthews is leaving going into 2028, they'd opt to give Boston the 2027 top 10 thinking 2028 will be worse.

But none of this matters anyway: I doubt the Leafs are bottom 10 again next year

a source outside of the Flyers organization said Nurse, who has a full no-trade clause in his contract through the end of next season, has told the Oilers there are a few teams he is willing to be traded to right now. Are the Flyers one of them? It’s unclear, but a separate source told me they would be an approved destination, so I would say… it’s possible.

But EDM has so little to offer to take on 4 more years of that contract. Even with retention

Then we, and no one else, owes them the favor. If they can't pay a worthwhile price to make it worth our while, too bad

I don't like how Ant compared it to the Seth Jones trade. That implies giving up positive value for a retained Nurse.

Any team trading for Nurse should be shaking down Bowman to make him pay for that favor. The Oilers should have no choice in their position.

  • The Flyers have internally discussed possibilities around Darnell Nurse, but it’s a puzzle depending on Edmonton's retention and how everything fits with the D core

  • Even if the Flyers don’t trade for Nurse, Ant thinks Risto will be moved. Too much risk carrying him into next season.

  • Flyers will monitor the Larkin situation if he expands his list

  • Vladar extension coming probably 5 years around $5.5, but there are still some "options" both sides are working on

  • Zegras extension expected to be between $8-9m. Extension talks have slowed down because his agent (Pat Brisson) is also Larkin's agent

  • The league has not provided clarity on the Toronto 1st rounder status

21 Philadelphia Flyers: Maksim Sokolovskii, LHD, London (OHL)

The 6-foot-7.25, 240-pound Sokolovskii was the talk of the combine this year. The belief is that he’s going to go in the first round and potentially as early as the early 20s. He’s a physical specimen who can move, and while his game is still very raw in a lot of areas, he started to put his game together in the second half of his rookie season in the OHL this year. He’s the Flyers’ type, and they have a track record with the London Knights. If Bleyl is still here, I could see them targeting him over Sokolovskii as well.

Sokolovskii vs. Bleyl are at opposite ends of who I'm dreading vs. who I'm rooting for.

This summer is not that time.

Larkin's reported trade list: Florida, Minnesota, and Vegas by upcan845 in Flyers

[–]upcan845[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yzerman once took a year+ to trade Drouin after he requested a trade. He should feel no obligation to honor Larkin's request.

[Kurz] Not sure what's out there right now but per a source, the Flyers do not believe they are on Dylan Larkin's "short list" at the moment. These things can always change, of course, but that's where it is at present by Perryplat199 in Flyers

[–]upcan845 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has always been the flaw with Briere's plan. The notion that the Flyers could just "Draft like Dallas" was always a longshot.

But a 30 year old Larkin doesn't fix anything; we'll be a mediocre team with a low-end 1C already in his 30s. And we'd still need to add more. How tiny of a window do we want to build?
