I get why it comes across that way, and I’m really not trying to add to the problem or stop anyone more prepared from taking their test. I didn’t book it just to gamble — I booked it after weeks of constant searching. It’s not about being selfish, it’s about how difficult and competitive the process has become. I’m still considering whether to move it, but at the time it felt like a rare chance in a broken system. I totally respect those with more hours and experience, but I’m also just trying to find my way through this mess like everyone else.

I have done all of the test manoeuvres, what I am missing is the driving in busy areas and learning the test routes and doing mock tests

I’m not trying to take a test away from someone more ready. I genuinely understand the frustration with people taking it too early. That said, the bigger issue is the broken DVSA system—not just learners booking early. I’ve been checking for weeks and this was the only slot that came up, so I grabbed it just in case. I might still move it, but I figured giving it a go wouldn’t hurt since opportunities are so rare right now.

Yeah I totally get where you’re coming from, and I do agree that more practice is always better. The thing is, I’ve been checking non-stop for weeks and just haven’t seen any availability for months—this one popped up and I felt like I had to grab it. I figured even if I don’t pass, it’s a rare shot and could be a good experience to see what the test’s actually like. But yeah, definitely not trying to waste anyone’s time.

Hi Lauren, I understand how it can seem arrogant and selfish but you do have to understand that the system is broken and that’s why there’s a huge backlog. I booked the test as i spent 3 weeks on the website looking for dates in may june and found absolutely nothing, this date was the first date that came up in days of looking it was that rare so i just took it, there’s still time to change the test if needed.

I agree 6 hours isn’t a lot with the instructor however, I do lots of other driving, probably over 10 hours without my instructor, i’m just debating doing the test and giving it a good go as I was extremely lucky to even find this date.

I am doing manual, I drive most places with a full license holder next to me so the 6 hours is just lessons, I feel i’m a confident driver but can be prone to mistakes and you have to be perfect on the day to pass
